OCS CLASS 3-03 ALPHA COMPANY Colonel Nett began his military service in the National Guard in 1940 by enlisting in Company C, 102nd Infantry where he served in the Pacific War Zone Task Force. Then as a platoon sergeant, Colonel Nett returned to Fort Benning in 1942 to attend the Officer Candidate School.
In 1944, he returned to the Pacific as a 1st lieutenant where he saw duty with the 305th Infantry, 71'th Infantry Oivision. In 1944, while serving as Company Commander of E Company, he commanded his company in an attack against a reinforced enemy battalion, which had held up the American advance for two days from its entrenched positions around a three story concrete building. With another infantry company and armored vehicles, E Co advanced against heavy machine gun and automatic weapons fire. Lieutenant Nett spearheaded the assault by hand-to-hand fighting with rifle and bayonet against the strongpoint. Although he was twice severely wounded, he pressed ahead with his troops to assure the capture of his objective. Wounded once more in the final assault, he made all arrangements for the resumption of the advance and command before seeking medical treatment. For this remarkable courage and determination he was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor.
After World War II, Captain Nett served with the Artillery Center School Troop, Fort Sill, Oklahoma and later with the 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division, Japan, where he became the Inspector General of Kobe Base, Japan. During the Korean War, Captain Nett was a Company Commander training uth Korean soldiers. He later served as the Inspector General of Headquarters uthwestem Area Command, doing classified missions for General McArthur's Far East adquarters.
In 1951, Major Nett attended the Regular Advanced Infantry Course at Fort nning, Georgia, and was subsequently assigned as an instructor to the Army Ground eneral School, Fort Riley, Kansas until 1954. From 1954 to 1957, he was the Station mmander of Erlangen Station, Nuremberg, Germany and returned to Fort Leavenworth, nsas to attend the Command and General Staff College. He was subsequently appointed e Chairman of the Attack Committee in the Ranger Department of the Infantry School. In 63, Lieutenant Colonel Nett was assigned to Vietnam as an advisor the Vietnamese 2nd fantry Division. Subsequent assignments include the 11th Air Assault (Test) Division; Battalion mmander of the Officer Candidate School, and Deputy Director of the Company Operations, fantry School. Colonel Nett's final assignment was Chief of Reserve Affairs for Europe, the iddle East, and North Africa in Heidelberg, Germany.
Colonel Nett's decorations include the Medal of Honor, Legion of Merit, Bronze tar Medal with "V" Device and two Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, eritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman adge, Ranger Tab, Airborne Gliderman, Air Assault, and Grand Cross of Malta.
Colonel Nett retired from the Army ion August 1973 and continued his ommunity service as a teacher in the Columbus, Georgia School System. His record of utstanding performance and achievements continued by being selected as Teacher of the ear in 1985.
Colonel Nett retired from teaching in 1987 and resides with his wife, Frances, in he Columbus-Fort Benning community. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and teaching ertificate in Social Science and Industrial Arts.
itation 1LT Nett was awarded the Medal of Honor, out nation's highest award, for conspicuous allantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. He commanded Company E in an attack against a reinforced enemy battalion, which had help up the American advance for two days from its entrenched positions around a three-story concrete building. With another Infantry company and armored vehicles, Company E advanced against heavy machine gun and other automatic-weapon fire with 1LT Nett spearheading the assault against the strongpoint. During the fierce hand-to-hand encounter which ensued. He killed seven deeply entrenched J~panese with his rifle and bayonet and although seriously wounded, gallantly continued to lead his men forward, refusing to relinquish his command. Again he was severely wounded, but still unwilling to retire, pressed ahead with his troops to assure capture of the objective. Wounded once more in the final assault, he calmly made all the arrangements for the resumption of the advance, turned over his command to another officer, and then walked unaided to the rear for medical treatment. By his remarkable courage in continuing forward through sheer determination despite successive wounds, 1LT Nett provided an inspiring example for his men and was instrumental in the capture of a vital strongpoint. The idea for the modern Officer Candidate School for Infantry was conceived in June 1938, when a plan for an officer-training program was submitted to the Chief of Infantry to Brigadier General L. Singleton, commandant of the Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia. No action was taken until July 1940, when Brigadier General Courtney Hodges, Assistant Commandant of the Infantry School, submitted a revised plan. The new program went into effect in July 1941 , as the Infantry, Field Artillery, and Coastal Artillery Officer Candidate Schools. Other branches later followed with their own officers Candidate Schools. On September 27, 1941 , the first infantry OCS class graduated 171 second lieutenants out of the 204 men who started the 17-week course. ·
The man credited with establishing the format, discipline, and code of honor still used in OCS today was General Omar Bradley, then Commandant of the Infantry School. As the Commandant of the Infantry School, General Bradley emphasized rigorous training, strict discipline and efficient organization. These tenets remain the base values of today's Officer Candidate School.
Between July 1941 and May 1947, over 100,000 candidates were enrolled in 448 Infantry OCS classes, of these approximately 67 percent were commissioned. After World War II , Infantry OCS was transferred to Fort Riley, Kansas, as part of the Ground General School. All other Officer Candidates Schools were discontinued.
On November 1, 1947, the Infantry OCS program was discontinued. The final class graduated only 52 second lieutenants.
A shortage of officers during the Korean conflict caused infantry OCS to reopen at Fort Benning on February 18, 1951. At this time, the course was lengthened from 17 to 22 weeks. The name was changed form The Infantry Officer Candidate School to the First Officer Candidate Battalion, Second Student Regiment. The strength of OCS increased rapidly. As one of eight branch programs, Infantry OCS included as many as 29 companies with a class graduating every week. During the Korean War, approximately 7,000 infantry officers graduated from OCS at Fort Benning.
On August 4, 1953, OCS was reduced from eight to three programs: Infantry, Artillery, and Engineer.
Shortly before the onset of the Vietnam Conflict OCS had been reduced to two programs, Infantry and Field Artillery. During the height of the Vietnam Conflict, Infantry OCS was one of five programs and produced 7,000 officers annually from five battalions at Fort Benning. Towards the end of the conflict OCS reduced to two programs, Infantry and Female OCS. Infantry OCS was reduced to two battalions and presently maintains one battalion.
In April 1973, a Branch Immaterial Officer Candidate School was created to replace the branch specific courses and the length of the course was reduced to 14 weeks. OCS for female officer candidates remained at Fort McClellan, Alabama until December 1976, when it merged with the branch immaterial OCS program at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Today's officer candidates enter the school from throughout the force. OCS continues to provide commissioned officers to the total force of all sixteen basic branches of the Army.
On June 12, 1998 to further integrate the Army, the Army National Guard OCS Phase Ill candidates began training alongside their active duty counterparts at Fort Benning. Officer Candidates from the National Guard and Army Reserve conduct the final phase of training before commissioning during their two-week annual training period. Over 650 future officers were trained for the Army in the first year, with similar numbers being trained in subsequent years.
The mission of OCS remains: to train selected personnel in the fundamentals of leadership; basic military skills; instill professional ethics; evaluate leadership potential; and commission those who qualify as second lieutenants in all sixteen basic branches of the Army.
