Match background

Arsenal FC go into their final home game in Group G against FC Dynamo Kyiv needing a victory to secure progress to the last 16 with a game to spare. • Arsène Wenger's men lead the group with eight points, two clear of FC Porto and three above Dynamo, who would be eliminated if they failed to win and the Portuguese champions were victorious at Fenerbahçe SK. • A Dynamo victory would take them above Arsenal but they have not won in England in eight previous attempts and face a team unbeaten at home in the UEFA Champions League in 21 matches – a run that includes six victories and five draws at the Arsenal Stadium, their home since 2006/07. • The sides drew 1-1 when they met on Matchday 1 in Kiev, Arsenal captain William Gallas rescuing the visitors from defeat with an 88th-minute strike to cancel out Ismaël Bangoura's penalty four minutes past the hour. • After that opening point, Arsenal recorded impressive wins at home against Porto (4-0) and away to Fenerbahçe (5-2) before falling short in a frustrating goalless home draw with the Turkish side last time out. • Dynamo's away form has been excellent thus far as they followed up a 0-0 draw at Fenerbahçe with a 1-0 victory at Porto on Matchday 3. However, Yuri Semin's men – seeking to take Dynamo into the last 16 for the first time since 1999/00 – then undid their good work by losing 2-1 at home to the Portuguese champions on 5 November, surrendering a half-time lead given them by Artem Milevskiy. • When Arsenal last received a visit from Dynamo, the roles were reversed and it was Wenger's charges with their backs to the wall after taking just one point from their opening three group-stage games in 2003/04 – including a 2-1 reverse in Kiev which featured a goal from , still a Dynamo player. • Yet they revived their hopes with a 1-0 win in the home fixture through an effort after 88 minutes and ended up topping the group with Dynamo down in fourth place.

• The lineups for that match at Highbury on 5 November 2003 were: Arsenal: Jens Lehmann, Lauren, Kolo Touré, , Ashley Cole, Fredrik Ljungberg (), Ray Parlour (), Gilberto, Robert Pirès, (Edu), . Dynamo: Olexandr Shovkovskiy, Georgi Peev, Goran Gavrančić, , Andriy Nesmachniy, Denys Onischenko (Goran Sabljić), Jerko Leko, Oleh Gusev (Diogo Rincón), Valentin Belkevich, Maksim Shatskikh (Roberto Nanni), Tiberiu Ghioane. • Overall Dynamo have had the better of past matches against Arsenal. When the teams met in the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League group stage, Dynamo – eventual semi-finalists that season – earned a 1-1 draw in London before prevailing 3-1 in the return in . • Dynamo, who finished group winners with Arsenal back in third place, fell behind at Highbury through a Dennis Bergkamp goal after 74 minutes but grabbed a point with a 90th-minute equaliser. • The lineups for that match on 21 October 1998 were: Arsenal: David Seaman, Lee Dixon, Tony Adams (Nelson Vivas), Martin Keown, Nigel Winterburn, Ray Parlour, Remi Garde, Stephen Hughes, Marc Overmars, Dennis Bergkamp, . Dynamo: Oleksandr Shovkovskyi, Oleh Luzhny (Vasyl Kardash), Olexandr Golovko, Vladyslav Vashchuk, Yury Dmytrulin, Kakha Kaladze, Vitaliy Kossovskiy, , Serhiy Rebrov, , Valentin Belkevich. • Dynamo's assistant coach, Oleh Luzhny, featured for the Ukrainian side that day before subsequently moving to Arsenal the following year. He made 75 league appearances for Arsenal between 1999 and 2003, collecting and FA Cup winner's medals. • Arsenal's overall record against Ukrainian opposition is W2 D3 L3. • Dynamo's record on English soil does not augur well for their chances. The 1-1 draw they recorded against the Gunners in 1998 was the only occasion they have avoided defeat in eight previous visits to England. Their most recent trip yielded a 4-0 defeat at Manchester United FC in last season's group stage. • Arsenal got the better of an FC Lokomotiv Moskva side coached by Semin in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage. After a goalless draw in Russia, the London team won 2-0 at home in their final game to secure first place in the section. • As coach of AS Monaco FC, Wenger oversaw a 1-0 aggregate defeat of Ukraine's FC Chornomorets Odesa in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup second round.

• "It was a very tight game," said Gunners boss Arsène Wenger. "At 0-0 we were in control but we made a mistake for the first goal. After that they defended very well and it was us trying to come back. We tried very hard and gave everything, and if we'd kept it at 0-0 we could have won this game. I believe in this team and this squad – let's not talk too much, keep our belief and stay united." • The manager left out club captain William Gallas for disciplinary reasons, with Manuel Almunia taking over the armband on his 100th appearance for Arsenal while Adebayor was missing, Cesc Fàbregas suspended, and , Kolo Touré and among those injured. Gavin Hoyte came in at right-back for his Premier League debut, Djourou made his first league outing since 20 September, with Alexandre Song also included and Robin van Persie returning from a ban. • Having failed to score in only one of their last 28 games in all competitions before Matchday 4, Arsenal have now drawn a blank in three of the last five matches. • Almunia and Clichy are ever-present in the league this season. • Ireland's goal was the first Arsenal have conceded in the last 15 minutes of a first half in the Premier League this season, although they are still to be breached in the first 15 minutes of a second period. Eleven of the 18 league goals they have shipped have come in the final 30 minutes of games. • The City defeat was the first occasion Arsenal have lost successive league matches since reverses against Everton FC, Liverpool and West Ham United FC between 18 March and 7 April 2007. • Arsenal have won one of their last five top-flight games. • The north Londoners have had a mixed time since Matchday 4 (the 0-0 home draw with Fenerbahçe SK). They returned to Premier League action on 8 November with a 2-1 home win against Manchester United FC, scoring in each half to secure a vital victory. • Łukasz Fabiański enjoyed his first Premier League outing of the campaign, replacing Almunia in goal with 12 minutes left after the Arsenal No1 sustained a head injury in a collision with Michael Carrick. • A week later, however, Wenger's men slipped to a fourth league defeat of the season – and a second at home – as they went down 2-0 to Aston Villa FC. Clichy inadvertently headed into his own net in the 70th minute and Gabriel Agbonlahor outpaced Gallas to fire in a clinching second ten minutes later. The winning margin might have been even worse for Arsenal had Almunia not saved Ashley Young's first-half penalty. • That reverse was the first time in 59 top-flight matches that Arsenal had lost by more than one goal, and was only their second home defeat in 44 matches in all competitions. • The Villa result was a marked comedown for Arsenal as, on 11 November, a youthful team had swept aside Wigan Athletic FC to reach the English League Cup quarter-finals. Jay Simpson scored in each half and Carlos Vela added a third. • Simpson's goals capped his first start for the Gunners, and just his second competitive first-team appearance. Amaury Bischoff and Rui Fonte made their club debuts as late substitutes. • "These boys do surprise everybody because of the mixture of character, commitment and calmness under pressure," Wenger said of his youthful charges. "They always play very good football. To play that team in a Premier League game could be tempting, but it is difficult to say as the pressure and the environment is different then." • Arsenal will travel to Championship side Burnley FC in the quarter-finals with the tie to be played on 2 December. Latest domestic information • Sunday 16 November: FC Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 FC Dynamo Kyiv (Willian 35) Dynamo slipped to their second league defeat of the season at arch-rivals Shakhtar, with Brandão setting up Willian to score the only goal. • The reverse ended Dynamo's 51-match unbeaten Premier League run on their travels, a sequence stretching back to June 2005 when they succumbed 3-2 at Shakhtar on the final day of the campaign. • Dynamo had won their ten previous league games and it was the first time they had failed to score in 30 top-flight outings. • "It was a tough, exciting match," said head coach Yuri Semin. "We looked pretty good and played decently, but good football does not always bring you points. We tried to improve our game with substitutions and fielded quite a few attackers, but failed to convert our chances." • Semin opted for a 4-4-2 formation, with Goran Sabljić replacing the injured Mikhalik at centre-back and El Kaddouri captaining the team in the absence of Nesmachniy. Andriy Yarmolenko partnered Artem Milevskiy up front with Bangoura on the bench. Bangoura came on for Tiberiu Ghioane early in the second half as the visitors sought an equaliser. • The defeat was Dynamo's first in the league since a 2-1 home loss to FC Metalist Kharkiv on 2 August, and only their second in 22 matches in all competitions. • Dynamo did not play at the weekend as their trip to FC Illychivets Mariupil, which was scheduled for 22 November, has been rearranged for next month at the request of the Kiev side. • Having struck eight goals in six games for club and country before Matchday 4, Bangoura has not scored in his last three outings for Dynamo, although he did register for Guinea on 19 November. • Despite the Shakhtar setback, Dynamo have the best defensive record in the Premier League having shipped just seven goals in their first 15 matches. Before the loss in Donetsk they had kept clean sheets in nine of their last ten league games. • Semin's men are yet to concede in the opening half-hour of a league fixture this term, and are also unbreached in the first 15 minutes of a second period. • Bangoura and Betão are ever-present in the Premier League during this campaign. • Following the 2-1 Matchday 4 reverse at home to FC Porto – ending an 18-game unbeaten streak in all competitions which included 14 victories – Dynamo were back in Premier League action on 9 November, beating FC 1-0 at home thanks to El Kaddouri's 75th-minute strike. Aliyev missed an early penalty, before El Kaddouri pounced on a loose ball after 's free-kick and drilled it in from the edge of the box. • It was El Kaddouri's first goal of the campaign and only his fourth in the league for Dynamo from 85 appearances. • Dynamo swept into the semi-finals with an impressive 4-1 quarter-final triumph at FC Stal Alchevsk on 12 November, despite fielding a much-changed lineup. Roman Eremenko was the only regular to start, with Oleh Gusev and Carlos Corrêa back in the fold after long injury absences while assistant coach Oleh Luzhny took charge. Two long-range efforts from Cernat and another goal by Yarmolenko put the visitors in command by half-time and, though Sabljić put through his own goal early in the second period, Yarmolenko sealed a comfortable win with his second and Dynamo's fourth late on. • Dynamo will face Shakhtar in the semi-finals, with the tie to be played in April 2009. It will be the first time the clubs have met in the Ukrainian Cup before the final.

Head coach Arsenal FC: Arsène Wenger Date of birth: 22 October 1949 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Mutzig, FC Mulhouse, AS Vauban, RC Strasbourg Coaching career: RC Strasbourg (assistant coach), AS Cannes (assistant coach), AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Monaco FC, Nagoya Grampus Eight, Arsenal FC Arsène Wenger was never covered in glory as a player, but has more than made up for that lack of success in his time as a coach, turning Arsenal FC into one of Europe's top teams thanks to his incredible eye for a bargain and an astute footballing mind. Born in Strasbourg, Wenger worked at RC Strasbourg and AS Cannes before AS Nancy-Lorraine offered him his big break. He impressed sufficiently to be offered the job as coach of AS Monaco FC in 1987. Within a year Monaco scooped the French championship and Wenger the Manager of the Year award. He reportedly turned down France and FC Bayern München to continue at Monaco, although he did subsequently move on to Japan and enjoy tremendous success with Nagoya Grampus Eight. Appointed by Arsenal in September 1996, Wenger became the first foreigner to win the Premiership in 1998, adding the first of four FA Cup triumphs to boot. The Gunners lost the 2000 UEFA Cup final to Galatasaray SK but claimed another double in 2002, and in 2004 played some thrilling attacking football en route to becoming the first team since 1889 to negotiate a top-flight season unbeaten. Wenger, given the freedom of Islington for his domestic success in north London, nearly topped all of his achievements by taking Arsenal to the 2006 UEFA Champions League final, only for FC Barcelona to come from behind to win 2-1. Arsenal's move to their new stadium later that year was also instigated by Wenger.

FC Dynamo Kyiv: Yuri Semin Date of birth: 11 May 1947 Nationality: Russian Playing career: FC Spartak Orel, FC Spartak Moskva, FC Lokomotiv Moskva, FC Dinamo Moskva, FC Kairat Almaty, FC Chkalovec Novosibirsk, FC Kuban Krasnodar Coaching career: FC Pamir Dushanbe, FC Lokomotiv Moskva, Russia, FC Dinamo Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv Yuri Semin is one of the most successful Russian coaches of the last decade. His playing career reached new heights in 1965 when he was invited to FC Spartak Moskva after starring for Russia's Under-21 team at a tournament between the Soviet republics. Overall he played 280 games in the Soviet League, scoring 39 goals. After Spartak he moved on to city rivals FC Dinamo Moskva where he won a runners-up medal and the domestic cup in 1970. He retired due to injury in 1980 while captain of FC Kuban Krasnodar. After receiving his coaching licence he started work at FC Pamir Dushanbe in 1983. However, he is best known for coaching FC Lokomotiv Moskva, where he spent 19 years until 2005, interrupted by a short break in 1990 when he was appointed as an adviser to the New Zealand Under-21 team. With Semin in charge, Lokomotiv were transformed into one of Russia's leading clubs. He was appointed in 1986 when Lokomotiv were relegated from the top flight but they were soon back in the élite and under Semin claimed league titles in 2002 and 2004 in addition to four Russian Cups and reaching the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals in 1998 and 1999. Between 1992-1994 and 1996-1999 Semin was the Russian assistant coach, a precursor to taking over the national team in April 2005. However, six months later he quit after failing to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. At the beginning of 2006 Semin had a short spell at the helm of Dinamo Moskva but soon switched to the position of sporting director at Lokomotiv. After being dismissed, he signed a contract with FC Dynamo Kyiv in December 2007 and guided the Ukrainian club into the UEFA Champions League group stage with an aggregate victory over Spartak in the third qualifying round in August of the following year.

UEFA information

UEFA President visits UEFA President Michel Platini visited four European countries – Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Romania – to discuss football affairs with government and national association officials. During his visit, the UEFA President emphasised that UEFA would consolidate its support for Europe's smaller associations. "UEFA is a large fraternal house where there are no privileges or preferential treatment, where small associations with limited financial resources are treated the same as the wealthy major associations," he told the Football Association of Albania's general assembly. "The resources generated by our major competitions are shared in an equitable manner between everyone." Medical Forum in Nyon The crucial role taken by club doctors prompted UEFA to organise the inaugural UEFA Elite Club Medical Forum in Nyon last week. The forum was an ideal opportunity to emphasise that club doctors are now part of a 'team behind a team', working in tandem with physiotherapists, masseurs and advisors on a variety of specialist issues, and to stress that their views should never be underestimated. "I admire you," the medics were told by Dr Michel D'Hooghe, chairman of the UEFA Medical Committee. "When I started my career as a team doctor, I received only one question every week from my coach: 'Can he play next Saturday?' Times have changed, at FIFA and UEFA level, and in the clubs. We gradually saw that football asks more than whether a player can play the next game. We started talking about things such as dermatology, physiology, psychology, pharmacology, hygiene, diets – and then came the internationalisation of sports and we started talking about jetlag and football at altitude. The club doctor now has a team of specialists to help him. Football medicine has also become a team sport, and club doctors have to supervise all these aspects of sports medicine." EURO's sustainability strategy UEFA EURO 2008™ was the first major football tournament to feature an integrated sustainability strategy, and following the publication of a report on the successes in Austria and Switzerland, it is hoped the tournament has set standards for other major sporting events in the future. The strategy was based on the three target dimensions of sustainable development – the environment, economy and society/culture – and featured a total of almost 60 measures divided into 12 topics. The most notable successes came in the areas of transport (65 per cent public transport usage for long distances and 80 per cent at urban level) and energy (with the majority of energy provided as certified "naturemade star" electricity from renewable sources). There were also plenty of successful projects in the society and culture area, such as the provision of live audio commentary to help blind or partially-sighted fans enjoy the matches in the stadiums. French clubs visit UEFA has been explaining its activities and other European football issues to representatives of the union of French professional football clubs, UCPF, in the latest of a series of planned visits by clubs throughout Europe. In the meeting at UEFA's House of European Football in Nyon, the presidents of French first and second division clubs and UCPF delegates heard various presentations by UEFA's directors and departmental heads covering the broad palette of the work undertaken by European football's governing body. Presentations focused among other things on the local training of players, financial running of clubs, European club competitions and their formats and marketing, the governance of UEFA and European football, and UEFA's relations with Europe's clubs, leagues and players' bodies. The French delegates also held discussions with UEFA President Michel Platini. Gerrard admiration has been at Liverpool FC for 20 years, and in the first team for ten of those. In the latest edition of the official UEFA Champions League magazine Champions the Reds' inspirational skipper talks about the joy and pain of winning and losing finals, how the Anfield club belong in Europe and the ease of playing behind Fernando Torres. Gerrard says that if he could be like any other player, it would be FC Barcelona's brilliant Argentinian Lionel Messi. "If I had his balance, skill and his ability to go past five opponents, I wouldn't be a bad player..." Eat For Goals! UEFA, the European Commission and the World Heart Federation joined forces in Brussels to help launch the Eat for Goals! children's cookbook, in which 13 top footballers give recipes for their favourite healthy dishes. A star-studded list has contributed to the book – in order of chapters, Abbas Suan, Barry Ferguson, Birgit Prinz, Carles Puyol, Cathrine Paaske Sørensen, Fabio Cannavaro, Heurelho Gomes, Kelly Smith, Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Steven Gerrard and Thierry Henry. Eat for Goals! is published in English, French and German by publisher Falkemedia and is available to be ordered online at www.falkemedia-shop.de.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders Manchester United FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Six other teams have gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06) and RSC Anderlecht (2004/05) plus FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage). Dynamo also conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2007/08, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06. Last updated: 11.11.2008
