2009 –10 annual report annual report 2009 –10 annual report 2009 –10 The National Gallery of Australia is a Commonwealth authority established under the National Gallery Act 1975. The vision of the National Gallery of Australia is the cultural enrichment of all Australians through access to their national art gallery, the quality of the national art collection, the exceptional displays, exhibitions and programs, and the professionalism of Gallery staff. The Gallery’s governing body, the Council of the National Gallery of Australia, has expertise in arts administration, corporate governance, administration and financial and business management. In 2009–10, the National Gallery of Australia received appropriation funding from the Australian Government totalling $73.448 million (including an equity injection of $15.736 million for development of the national collection and $17.22 million for the Stage 1 South Entrance and Australian Indigenous Galleries project), raised $28.396 million, and employed 269 full-time equivalent staff. © National Gallery of Australia 2010 ISSN 1323 5192 All rights reserved. The buying and selling of dugouts is a way of life in the Opal Capital of the World where the majority of family homes are subterranean. A strong real-estate presence has always been evident in Coober Pedy, but opal mining family John and Jerlyn Nathan with their two daughters are self-selling their historic dugout in order to buy an acreage just out of town that will suit their growing family’s needs better. The Nathan family currently live on the edge of town, a few minutes from the school and not far from the shops. Despite they brag one of most historic homes around with a position and a view from the east side of North West Ridge to be envied, John tells us that his growing family needs more space outside. “Prospector’s Dugout has plenty of space inside, with 4 bedrooms plus,” said John. “But the girls have grown in 5 years and we have an opportunity, once this property is sold, to buy an acreage outside of town, and where my daughters can have a trail bike and other outdoor activities where it won’t bother anyone.” “I will regret relinquishing our location and view but I think kids need the freedom of the outdoors when they are growing up,’ he said. John and Jeryln bought the 1920’s dugout at 720 Russell John and Jerlyn Nathan with daughters De’ Arna and Darna on the patio at Prospector’s Dugout.

Yvonne Boyd, David Chalker, Valerie Herbst, Clare Golson, Barbara Blackman, Felicity St John Moore, Derek Wrigley, Colin Ploughman, Sebastian Clark, Heather Rusden, and Jim Davidson provided invaluable information about the artists during the time of their fellowships. Howard Morphy — my co-writer — Pip Deveson, and Ian Dunlop gave advice and support on the subject of Narritjin and his paintings. Librarians of The Canberra Times, the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Art Gallery of South Australia provided material from their libraries. Photographers Stuart Hay, Brenton McGeachey, Pip Deveson, George Serras and Dragi Markovic supplied high quality images for the catalogue. Mark Henderson and John Carr at the National Museum were most generous with their time. Bruce Egan, the Registrar at the National Gallery, smoothed some awkward transport problems. Extending the usual academic reach of the gallery these artworks have been conceived with direct student participation and collaboration in mind.
