Drinkers order Whisky Galore island’s entire stocks … five years too early 4th may 2009 shân ross Not a brick has been laid to build the first distillery on the island where Whisky Galore! was filmed—but connoisseurs have already signed up to reserve the entire batch of its first-year casks. Peter Brown will begin building the distillery on Barra in the autumn. The distillery, costing more than £1 million, will make about 5,000 gallons of Isle of Barra Single Malt Whisky a year using water from Loch Uisge, the island’s highest loch. It will use barley grown by crofters on the island before being milled and malted locally and be bottled at the distillery in Borve. Whisky needs to be matured for three years before it can legally be called whisky so the distillery will not have its first consignment until 2014. In the meantime Mr Brown has taken orders for the £1,000 oak casks from individuals and groups of friends from countries including Germany, Japan and Sweden, and the rest of the u.k. More than half the casks will be retained by the distillery but he is already selling his public quota of second-year reserve. Mr Brown said it was impossible to tell at this stage what the whisky would taste like but that it was ‘unlikely to be excessively peaty’. He said it would sell at about £30 a bottle at current prices at the premium end of market. Mr Brown, who ran a courier company in Edinburgh before moving to Barra 12 years ago, said: ‘The whisky will be of the island, from the island. -

Courtesy McCormick American lesbian art in the earlier twentieth century was indelibly shaped by the Library of Special expatriate experience, especially by the salons of Paris, and by the emergence of a Collections, Northwestern University. more democratic art form, photography, which allowed marginalized communities to document their lives and experiences. After World War II, however, many lesbians felt enormous pressure to retreat into the closet. Expatriates in Paris Like the generation that preceded them, American women artists of the early twentieth century went to Europe to seek a less-restricted environment in which to develop their art and many went back and forth between the continents. In Paris an international group of artists and intellectuals congregated around the literary salons of expatriate American lesbians Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) and her partner Alice Toklas (1877-1967), both writers and art patrons; and that of the publicly lesbian Natalie Clifford Barney (1876-1972), nicknamed "The Amazon" for her love of equestrianism. Barney, a wealthy poet and author from Washington, D.C., hosted her weekly salon for sixty years. Djuna Barnes (1892-1982) was born in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, and later moved to New York City, where her first job was as a reporter and illustrator. A painter, she eventually also became a poet, playwright, and novelist, and illustrated her own books. In 1921 Barnes went to Paris as a correspondent for McCall's magazine; she remained for twenty years. -

Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Gregory Flaxman Erin Carlston Eric Downing Andrew Perrin Pamela Cooper © 2016 Lindsay Rebecca Starck ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Lindsay Rebecca Starck: “News that stays news”: Transformations of Literature, Gossip, and Community in Modernity (Under the direction of Gregory Flaxman and Erin Carlston) Recent decades have demonstrated a renewed interest in gossip research from scholars in psychology, sociology, and anthropology who argue that gossip—despite its popular reputation as trivial, superficial “women’s talk”—actually serves crucial social and political functions such as establishing codes of conduct and managing reputations. My dissertation draws from and builds upon this contemporary interdisciplinary scholarship by demonstrating how the modernists incorporated and transformed the popular gossip of mass culture into literature, imbuing it with a new power and purpose. The foundational assumption of my dissertation is that as the nature of community changed at the turn of the twentieth century, so too did gossip. Although usually considered to be a socially conservative force that serves to keep social outliers in line, I argue that modernist writers transformed gossip into a potent, revolutionary tool with which modern individuals could advance and promote the progressive ideologies of social, political, and artistic movements. Ultimately, the gossip of key American expatriates (Henry James, Djuna Barnes, Janet Flanner, and Ezra Pound) became a mode of exchanging and redefining creative and critical values for the artists and critics who would follow them. -

© Lizzie Thynne, 2010 Indirect Action: Politics and the Subversion of Identity in Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore’s Resistance to the Occupation of Jersey Lizzie Thynne Abstract This article explores how Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore translated the strategies of their artistic practice and pre-war involvement with the Surrealists and revolutionary politics into an ingenious counter-propaganda campaign against the German Occupation. Unlike some of their contemporaries such as Tristan Tzara and Louis Aragon who embraced Communist orthodoxy, the women refused to relinquish the radical relativism of their approach to gender, meaning and identity in resisting totalitarianism. Their campaign built on Cahun’s theorization of the concept of ‘indirect action’ in her 1934 essay, Place your Bets (Les paris sont ouvert), which defended surrealism in opposition to both the instrumentalization of art and myths of transcendence. An examination of Cahun’s post-war letters and the extant leaflets the women distributed in Jersey reveal how they appropriated and inverted Nazi discourse to promote defeatism through carnivalesque montage, black humour and the ludic voice of their adopted persona, the ‘Soldier without a Name.’ It is far from my intention to reproach those who left France at the time of the Occupation. But one must point out that Surrealism was entirely absent from the preoccupations of those who remained because it was no help whatsoever on an emotional or practical level in their struggles against the Nazis.1 Former dadaist and surrealist and close collaborator of André Breton, Tristan Tzara thus dismisses the idea that surrealism had any value in opposing Nazi domination. -

From Hyrstorians to Bolex Dudes: The Many Descendants of Barbara Hammer Last autumn, NYFF55 kicked off a citywide retrospective of works by the prolific experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer. Well-attended screenings followed at the Museum of the Moving Image, the Whitney Museum, and Anthology Film Archives—for good reason: a handful of Hammer’s films, thanks to a National Film Preservation Grant and archivist Carmel Curtis, are newly restored. 50 years and over 100 films later, there’s never been a better time to know Barbara Hammer—as much as one can, anyway. As she inquired during the Q&A following NYFF’s Barbara Hammer Program, “Do we ever know anyone? I don’t think we do. I think we die alone and we are born alone and I do my damndest to show who I am by making films.” Instead of focusing on Hammer’s own movies, many of which are rubbing up against audiences for the first time in decades, IFC Center, in partnership with Queer | Art | Film, enriched the retrospective by screening seven early feminist experimental films that motivated Hammer (once an aspiring painter) to grab life by the Bolex. The mildly devoted Hammer viewer can reiterate the origin story. Dyketactics’ twirling intimacy and idealism echo Carolee Schneeman’s Fuses (1965); History Lessons’ feminist snicker, Martha Rossler’s Semiotics of the Kitchen (1975); and Place Mattes’ erotic fixation on the hands, Yvonne Ranier’s Hand Movie (1966). Who influenced Barbara Hammer’s work? It is IFC Center’s thorough answer to this question which compels me to ask another one: Who is influenced by Barbara Hammer’s work? In The Argonauts, the poet Maggie Nelson’s memoir on her relationship with the video artist and director Harry Dodge (By Hook or by Crook), she observes, “A lot of lesbian sex writing from the 70s was about being turned on, and even politically transformed, by an encounter with sameness. -

Although recent discussions have opened debate as to how a variety of discourses can be read as autobiographical, Flanner’s fifty years worth of cultural, political, and personal observation requires an analysis which incorporates traditional and contemporary theories concerning life-writing. Essentially, autobiographical scholarship must continue to push the boundaries of analysis, focusing on the interactions and reactions between the outer world and the inner self. -
