Antony Paul and Christopher Chiam who are the Firsts and Seconds coaches would like to thank everyone who trialled for Senior teams this year. They have had an incredibly difficult time trying to decide between some of the boys. We appreciate the time and effort you all put in, as students and, in addition I appreciate the time and effort the coaches have put in. They have made every effort to make sure we have the best chances of success in the GPS and PDC competitions and, as such, this year, for the first time, we allowed last year’s Year 9 GPS As to trial as well as Years 11 and 12. This was a very useful experience for all four of them and has been particularly successful for one who has made it into the GPS Second Squad. Another unusual decision this year has been to have quite different GPS Seconds and Year 11 Premiers Debating team. Finally we have announced the team captains of Firsts, Seconds and Thirds at the start of the season. Well done boys - the serious work starts now. Commiserations for the unlucky boys, but remember we are still looking for two students to work with Andrew Liu in the GPS Thirds team. I am very pleased to announce the 2014 Sydney Boys High School Senior Debating teams. The other two team members will be chosen in Week 4 of next term. Rachel Powell Debating MIC Debating Prefect Report This week, we had a mixed bag of results with only 2 out of 6 wins in FED against Knox but 5 out of 6 wins against Cranbrook in Eastside. In FED, seniors were given the tricky topic “That racial background should be a factor in court verdicts”. All senior teams were unsuccessful with this topic on both sides but no doubt we learnt some valuable lessons about characterising arguments. In Eastside, the senior topic was a relevant one – “That universities should determine admissions based on interviews as opposed to the ATAR.” All out teams were successful in arguing their respective sides of this notion, giving nuanced points about the objective nature of the ATAR (and HSC exams) in contrast to the subjective nature of the interview. Today we face two of our biggest rivals in debating, Newington (in FED) and Grammar (Eastside), both at home. Hopefully we are successful all-round this week.

    2016 ‘Blue & Gold’ Cricket Luncheon The 22nd consecutive ‘Blue & Gold’ Cricket Luncheon was held at The Ivy Ballroom on Friday 18th November 2016. The welcome address highlighted the Sydney Uni Cricket Club’s new facilities: The Sydney Uni N°1 Oval has never looked so good in the month of November. It is getting rave reviews from the umpires and is showing the full benefit of an off-season without rugby games and rugby practice sessions. The Martin Lambert indoor cricket centre has added a new dimension to pre-season training and to cricket practice during inclement weather. The new outdoor practice nets will be fully operational before the end of November and they have already attracted bookings from the New South Wales Sheffield Shield squad and from both the Australian and South African Women’s cricket teams. The Sydney Uni Cricket Club now has world class indoor and outdoor practice facilities, as well as an oval of representative cricket standard. SUCC Chairman, Max Bonnell, introduced the 2016 SUCC Hall of Fame inductees: the late Joseph Coates, John Grimble and John Saint. The two Johns were then interviewed by Adam Spencer. The first entertainment segment was entitled ‘SUCC Hall of Fame’ and the Club Chairman, Max Bonnell, introduced the three 2016 inductees by referencing Summertime Blues, the comprehensive book which he co-authored with James Rodgers on 150 years of Sydney University Cricketers. Joseph Coates represented NSW with great success (76 1st Class wickets at an average of less than 12). Between 1866 and 1885 he took 501 1st Grade wickets for Sydney Uni at an average of little more than 8.

  • Hall of Fame Article John Kinloch 1832-1897
    Hall of Fame Article John Kinloch 1832-1897 Kinloch was born in Dublin, son of John (born in Scotland) and Helen nee Hurlston who emigrated to Australia in 1838. John junior was educated at the ‘Pitt Street Seminary’ run by Dr James Fullerton, a Presbyterian Minister, (It is tempting to speculate: Is Tom Fullerton, Club Captain in 2020-21 a descendant?) and played cricket from at least 1847 for the strong Union Club. When the University of Sydney opened its doors for the first time in October 1852, Kinloch was one of the first students to attend lectures and immediately threw himself into his studies and into organizing various extra-curricular activities. On 1 April 1854, Sydney University played its first recorded match against The Garrison on The Garrison Ground (now the site of the SCG) and won narrowly, Kinloch bowling unchanged through both of The Garrison’s innings and taking eight wickets. His bowling was “fast underarm” with a spin from the leg. A contemporary described him : ‘…takes but a short run, and delivers the ball sharply with a very rapid pace, very straight along the ground”. In the second game that University played a few weeks later, also against The Garrison, Kinloch took at least 11 wickets. He continued to be a prolific wicket-taker for the Club. In 18 games for which records survive, Kinloch took an extraordinary 133 wickets for Sydney University. Three games for NSW against Victoria brought him another 12 wickets. 1/2 Kinloch may be known as the ‘father’ of the Sydney University Cricket Club.
