Lawson New Law Dean Appointed FOlloWing an extensive selection process involving a search committee appointed by U.K. President Otis A. Singletary and faculty interviews of three finalists, the Board of Trustees on May 4 confirmed the appoint- ment of the College's eighth dean. He is Robert G. Lawson, 44, a West Virginia native of Kentucky an- cestry. He has been a member of the Kentucky faculty since 1966 and a full professor since 1973. He succeeds Thomas P. Lewis '54, whose resig- nation was announced in November, 1981. Lawson, who assumed his decanal appointment July 1, is a 1960 grad- uate of Berea College and a member of the UK College of Law class of 1963. He is a past Editor-in-Chief of the Kentucky Law Journal and a member of Order of the Coif. In his first year of practice, Dean Lawson was tax counsel for Appala- chian Power Company, Roanoke, Virginia. From 1964 to 1966 he was associated with the Lexington firm of Eblen, Howard and Milner, the successor firm to which he was of counsel for many years following his Why is this man laughing? Appointed (Continued from page 1) A six-time winner of the Student Bar Association's Outstanding Teacher Award and a 1971 recipient of the University's Great Teacher Award, Lawson served as the Col- lege's acting dean 1971-73. He was named Law Alumni Professor in 1979. Also in that year he was nom- inated for both the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky (with two others) and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit (with four others). His numerous contributions to the bar, the judiciary and the General Assembly include service as princi- pal drafter of the Kentucky Penal Code and membership on the com- mittee for revision of Kentucky's Criminal Rules.
