Please pray for the repose of the souls of Bet Blacker, Maureen Cherrett, Antonia Welch, John Dollman and all who have died recently. Also for those whose anniversaries occur at this time.

Please continue to pray for those suffering with Coronavirus, those who have died from the virus and most importantly plead for the end of the pandemic. A Plenary Indulgence is available to all who pray for these intentions under the usual conditions of making Sacramental Confession, Holy Communion (both as soon as possible after the lockdown) and prayers for the intentions of Pope Francis (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be). Acts to be performed for the indulgence include read the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour, or recite the Rosary or the Way of the Cross. As is evident to all, the recitation of prayers and the reading of the Bible can be done without leaving home, and therefore in full compliance with the rules to counter the spread of the virus.

Please also remember in your prayers:

Carole Davies, Doreen Price, Olive Adams, Monica Lloyd, Stanley Whitfield, Baby Ronnie Gwyer, Rita Stokes, Biddy Williams, Mary Finnerty, Debbie Burnett (Reynish), Mary Richards, Reg Gough, Terrence Rose, Peter Okwusogu, Sr. Denise, Jeanette Bassett, John Ryan, Pat Bowen, Daniel Gabriel, Monica Pugsley, Catherine Wenegrieme, Annie Cutinha, Jean Main, Margaret Millwater, Zoe Coleman, Mellisah M and all the sick at home or in our hospitals, and all who care for them. To add a request please contact one of the priests.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

We continue to offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturdays from 1.00- 2.00pm in the grounds of St. David’s Catholic Church, Park Crescent, Newport. For the safety of everyone involved, and to ensure social distancing, Confession will be offered in two ways:

Drive thru Confessions

For individuals who are on their own and can drive, you will be able to drive onto the grounds of the church and follow the one-way system to a designated point for Confession. Simply pull up at the point, wind down the window and make your Confession without leaving the car. Once done, follow the one-way system out of the church grounds.

Family/Household Walk up Confessions

For family/household groups, a priest will be available in the grounds, the position can vary so just ask the steward where to go. Social distancing must be maintained at all times; you may queue as your household, but two meters must be maintained with members of other households. If you are taking part in walk up Confessions we ask that you park responsibly near to the school and not drive on to the grounds for safety and to ensure traffic flow for drive thru confessions.

Confession by appointment @ St. Mary’s - Confessions can also be made, by appointment, in the parking area at the back of the presbytery at St. Mary’s. Please contact one of the priests directly to make suitable arrangements. ST MARY’S IS OPEN! . After 3 months, we are delighted that the church doors of St. Mary’s are re-opening once again for private prayer. Much work has gone into getting the church ready to comply with social-distancing and the strict cleaning requirements that are necessary for everyone’s safety. Thanks must go to the teams of people who put in a total of 8 hours 30 minutes giving the church a thorough clean as part of the requirements for gaining the certificate to reopen.

Why St. Mary’s only? The sheer volume of work required to get the church certified Covid secure and the need for at least 6 volunteers to be on hand to steward and to clean. Furthermore, it has been recommended that only one church in each local area be open.

Please note, the church is only be open for private prayer, NOT for Mass. This is the first in a step-by-step approach to being able to offer public liturgies. We have no idea when we will be able to gather for Mass publically again, but it is likely to be quite a while yet.

When is St. Mary’s open?

St. Mary’s will open its doors for the first time since lockdown TOMORROW (Saturday 27th June 2020) for TWO hours (12.00pm-2.00pm). Then over next week the church will be open Monday & Wednesday (10.00pm-12.00pm) and Sunday (5th July) at 3.00pm-5.00pm. The church will only be open 2 hours at a time for the safety and welfare of our volunteer stewards – limiting their risk of possible exposure to the Coronavirus.

Things to keep in mind before you come to church:

1. We will only be allowed to have 24 visitors in the church at any given moment. So please plan your visit with thought and courtesy to others; we ask that you do not plan to be in the church for the full two hours. If a queue forms outside we will be limiting the amount of time spent in the church. 2. It is recommended that you do NOT come to church if you are classified as vulnerable to the virus OR you live with/care for someone who is vulnerable. 3. Please do NOT come to church is you feel unwell, especially if you have a new persistent cough, are running a temperature or have lost your sense of taste/smell.

What will happen when you arrive at St. Mary’s:

Entrance to the church will be via the front SIDE entrance (the main doors will be closed). If there are already 24 people in the church, you will be asked to form a queue on the pavement as we operate a 1 in, 1 out policy.

When you come into the church, you will be greeted by one of the stewards who will check your temperature using a contactless thermometer and offer you hand sanitizer.

Once inside, there is a one-way system you will need to follow. You may only travel DOWN one of the side aisles towards the front of the church, and only travel UP the main aisle if absolutely necessary. The EXIT will be via the emergency exit down the front of the church, out on to School Lane. Floor markings are used to indicate direction of travel and areas that we should not cross into, please do not step over any Black & Yellow tape.

Always keep social distancing in mind while in the church. Pews have been socially distanced, please only sit where you see a green tick on the back of the pew.

Family/household groups will be allowed to sit together.

Due to the flammable nature of hand sanitizer, it will NOT be possible to light votive candles at this time. If you would like to have a candle burn at one of the statues, please speak with the priest or a steward to arrange a 3 day or 7 day candle to be placed there for you. 3 day candles are £2.50/7 day candles are £5.00.

Please use the hand sanitizer available at the EXIT before you leave the building and STAY SAFE.

Volunteers

A huge thank you to all those who have volunteered to help with re- opening the church. Without your help we would not be able to open the church at this time. If you would like to consider becoming a volunteer and helping St. Mary’s to stay open for longer, please contact one of the priests or email [email protected]
