Should You Buy the Nintendo Switch?
Should You Buy the Nintendo Switch? By Nathaniel Evans I have been playing Nintendo consoles since I was 6 years old. I first played games offered by Nintendo Game Boy Advance and, as the years went by, I moved on to the Nintendo Ds then the Nintendo Wii. I own every single console ever made by Nintendo, except the Nintendo Wii-U because it would have been redundant. Having been a huge Nintendo fan my entire life and based on my experience with the consoles, I can attest that the Nintendo Switch is well worth the money and just may be the best console that they have ever produced. If you have not bought a Nintendo Switch yet, allow me to share with you why I did. The Nintendo Switch is not any run of the mill console. Yes, it outputs video of your games to a television just like any other console, but it has one added benefit, portability. Haven’t you ever wanted to just take your PS4 or Xbox One anywhere at any time, but cannot because it must be tethered to a television at all times? Well, the Switch has you backed up since the Switch not only outputs to a television screen, but it is also a tablet that allows you to play video games anywhere and at any time on the built in screen. Ever notice how creative Nintendo’s hardware is compared to the competition? They were one of the first to have an analog stick fully integrated into a console in the 90s on the Nintendo 64, they were the first to fully integrate motion control gaming into a console with the Wii, and in the recent past, they were the first to make a console that is fully portable and still have it pack a graphics punch. -

Female Fighters
Press Start Female Fighters Female Fighters: Perceptions of Femininity in the Super Smash Bros. Community John Adams High Point University, USA Abstract This study takes on a qualitative analysis of the online forum, SmashBoards, to examine the way gender is perceived and acted upon in the community surrounding the Super Smash Bros. series. A total of 284 comments on the forum were analyzed using the concepts of gender performativity and symbolic interactionism to determine the perceptions of femininity, reactions to female players, and the understanding of masculinity within the community. Ultimately, although hypermasculine performances were present, a focus on the technical aspects of the game tended to take priority over any understanding of gender, resulting in a generally ambiguous approach to femininity. Keywords Nintendo; Super Smash Bros; gender performativity; symbolic interactionism; sexualization; hypermasculinity Press Start Volume 3 | Issue 1 | 2016 ISSN: 2055-8198 URL: http://press-start.gla.ac.uk Press Start is an open access student journal that publishes the best undergraduate and postgraduate research, essays and dissertations from across the multidisciplinary subject of game studies. Press Start is published by HATII at the University of Glasgow. Adams Female Fighters Introduction Examinations of gender in mainstream gaming circles typically follow communities surrounding hypermasculine games, in which members harass those who do not conform to hegemonic gender norms (Consalvo, 2012; Gray, 2011; Pulos, 2011), but do not tend to reach communities surrounding other types of games, wherein their less hypermasculine nature shapes the community. The Super Smash Bros. franchise stands as an example of this less examined type of game community, with considerably more representation of women and a colorful, simplified, and gore-free style. -

Limitations in Early Video Game Music and Their Aesthetic Impact Think
Limitations in Early Video Game Music and Their Aesthetic Impact View the audio examples given throughout this paper in this accompanying Youtube Playlist: https://bit.ly/2IzqdmX Think back to the first time you picked up a video game controller. You may remember the graphics or art style of that game, a favorite character, or that one level that you were stuck on for hours on end. Along with these memories, it’s quite likely that you thought of the infectious melodies that accompanied your virtual adventures. Undoubtedly, video game music is one of the most memorable and essential parts of this medium that we hold so dear. It is important to note, however, that many of these soundtracks which we recall so fondly were made in the presence of technological challenges. The composers of video game music for the home consoles of the late 1980s and 90s overcame the limitations of these early systems by viewing what on the surface appeared to be constraints as challenges that would guide and enhance their creativity rather than control and restrict it. The choices made to combat or circumvent these technological limitations took place primarily in the areas of organization and timbre. It is in these areas that the limitations faced by early video game music composers have had a lasting influence on the aesthetic choices of contemporary video game composers, and as a result — the modern landscape of video game music. Before we can properly identify how technological limitations have influenced the development of video game music, it is necessary to establish the context in which these limitations were faced. -

Jumping Through Platformer History: a Review of Super Mario Odyssey

Nintendo’s Mario games are some of the few in the 3 InVisible Culture Journal Jumping Through Platformer History: A Review of Super Mario Odyssey industry that continue to garner widespread praise and blockbuster success, while still cultivating a cute and rather benign aesthetic. Mario games continue to successfully resist the hyperviolence of other console/PC games that make up the majority of games that have its level of success. The franchise’s popularity depends both on brand recognition as well as unusually tight mechanics that are necessary for a good platformer experience. [1] Mario games always feel carefully and lovingly designed, facilitating a desired sense of “flow” and control. Odyssey is no different, yet it would be shortsighted to see it as just a continuation of what Super Mario 64 began.[2] If Mario 64 marks the transition from 2D to 3D games, Odyssey [along with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)] is Nintendo’s foray into the open world genre. But what continues to place it squarely into what gamers will recognize as a platformer is that it all still centers around the jump.
