14 Campus Circle 12.20.12 - 1.16.13 Film | Music | Culture HOLIDAYGIFTIDEAS WIFI SOUND UNDER THE TREE Pioneer accomplishes great sound with its Wireless Sound System.

BY CAMPUS CIRCLE STAFF WRITER

I appreciate the simplicity of technology. That is, to be able to turn a new device on and get it to work with minimal effort. I also appreciate the sleekness of that device, its portability and its capabilities. Pioneer accomplishes all of this with its line of Wireless Sound System Speakers, the XW-SMA1, XW-SMA3 and the XW-SMA4. Each Wi-Fi Speaker System offers similar functions with added features. The A1 features dual 3-inch speakers and a ¾-inch soft dome tweeter and uses a tuned bass reflex port to enhance bass response. The A3 uses identical audio components as the A1, but this model version adds a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery and a tough exterior for added convenience and portability. The A4 features five speakers, including dual 3-inch speakers, a dedicated 4-inch subwoofer and dual ¾-inch soft dome tweeters. I focused on the A3 for the rechargeable battery option and love its portability. You don’t have to plug it in and can pick it up and move it from room to room. I’m a minimalist and can’t stand seeing wires coming off tables. With the A3, you have a clean presentation on your end table or nightstand. It’s slick, not too large and offers a great sound. It will blend in well with your apartment or dorm room. When you want to move it from one room to another, you can pick it up from a recessed handle in the back of the speaker. The weight of the speaker (7lbs) also makes transition from room to room a smooth process. Another nice feature of the recessed handle is that it can serve as a storage area for the small remote control that comes with the speaker. Next, let’s talk about connectability. I’m an Apple loyalist. I use my iPhone and iPad religiously in my household. My biggest pet peeve with both devices though has been the sound quality. One can only get so much volume out of his iPad, and I don’t like using headphones with my iPhone when I listen to music. Thus, I’m either listening to music on my iMac or tapping into my roommate’s music box. With the A3, I can connect three different ways, (1) Through a wireless network in my household using my Airport Extreme (2) A direct wireless connect to the speaker or (3) A hardwire connection to the speaker. I tested all three connection methods. The hardwire connection where you can use your iPhone/iPad charger chord and connect directly through a port in the back of the speaker is a very quick and easy solution. The problem is, you are dealing with wires again and if you are not big on wires (like me), it is not the best option. With a little more effort, you can make a direct Wi-fi connection between your device and the speaker. This method works out perfectly. The connectivity is a gem for your device. However, if you have a direct device to speaker connection, you must first download a movie onto your Ipad in order to utilize the speaker. If you are on the Mac side, such as myself, I found networking with my airport extreme to be a bit challenging. However, once I made the connection, watching a film or Youtube video off my iPhone and iPad was quite enjoyable. The speaker performed perfectly. The sound quality was amazing and the movie viewing experience was very much enhanced by this Pioneer product. All three speaker models were specially tuned by renowned Pioneer sound engineer Andrew Jones to provide high volume output with excellent sound quality, and it shows. For a college student, the price of these speakers is a serious commitment, but if you want quality and connectivity, you got to pay for it. The A1 will set you back at $299.00. While the A3 and A4 each costs $399.00. Divide the A3 or A4 cost by 12 months, and you are looking at $33.25/ month (that’s about 8 lattes at the coffee house per month) to pay for an investment in your future. That is, excellent sound for your dorm room or apartment.

Get to know the UCLA star on a more personal level in this Q&A. BY LIZETTE RAMIREZ

Shabazz Muhammad, considered a top NBA draft lottery pick, grew up idolizing Kobe Bryant. WESTWOOD, Calif. – Shabazz Muhammad was the top basketball recruit in the nation while in high school. After graduating, he chose UCLA as the institution to attend and play college ball. But besides basketball, Muhammad is just like everyone else: He enjoys music, video games, NBA games and the city of Los Angeles. He is even someone who believes that a healthy diet and exercise contribute to being successful on the court. Muhammad made it clear that his diet and weight loss are helping him get his explosiveness back. He weighed 245 pounds before the season began and managed to drop approximately 10-12 pounds in a week; he hopes to get down to about 215-220 pounds. Now, Muhammad says he’s focused to get the team back into a winning mode, and he believes UCLA can regain its rich basketball tradition. Campus Circle conducted an exclusive interview with Muhammad, 19, and he talked about his decision to select the Bruins over other programs, academics, the UCLA campus, his favorite NBA basketball player, hobbies and more.

Campus Circle: Ultimately, what made you choose UCLA over other schools? Shabazz Muhammad: I just looked at the campus. I mean it was second to none with the academics and [the] mixture between basketball and the tradition here.

CC: Your father was a USC Trojan. How did he react toward your decision to become a UCLA Bruin? SM: He wanted me to go to SC in the beginning. But when all these schools started recruiting me, he looked at the bigger picture and UCLA…I just liked [UCLA] a little bit more than SC, and he respected that.

CC: How do you manage college basketball and your academics? SM: I mean it’s hard, but you just have to stay focused, you just have to study and after you study it’s all about basketball. It’s a really hectic schedule, but it’s something you have to deal with.

CC: What do you like most about the UCLA campus? SM: I think what I like most is that everything is so close, like Ackerman and the gym. I just like Pauley [Pavilion]. Pauley is such a nice arena to play in…

CC: While in college, is Los Angeles how you imagined it? SM: Yeah. I love L.A. I’m from here, so it’s great. Even in Westwood it’s like our own little village or town, so it’s great.

CC: What do you do in your free time? What are your hobbies? SM: I play video games. I’m a big video game guy, especially since we have practice now; I’m not trying to go out as much. So, I just sit at home and play video games.

CC: What kind of video games do you play? SM: I play 2K12, basketball games, soccer games and Call of Duty. Those are my three main ones.

CC: What kind of music and artists do you have on your iPod? SM: Drake, Jay-Z and Lil’ Wayne - those kind of guys. I’m not into hardcore rap, but [I like] hip-hop that really flows. I like 2Pac, Dr. Dre, Notorious B.I.G. - those guys, too.

CC: Who was your favorite basketball player growing up? Why? SM: Kobe [Bryant] just because my family [members] are die-hard Lakers fans, and I just got brainwashed.

CC: Besides basketball, what other sports do you like? SM: No other sports; just basketball right now. I think Coach Ben Howland would kill us if he found out that we were doing other sports. But if I could play another sport, it would probably be football. I love watching football; I think I could actually there and catch some passes.

CC: Overall, who will have a better basketball season: Clippers or Lakers? SM: I think the Clippers right now.

CC: What do you think about the Lakers’ season thus far? What are their issues? SM: I think their biggest issue right now is that they’re not jelling as a team yet. They don’t know their guys’ roles. Dwight [Howard] is such a good player, Kobe is such a good player, but I think when they get [Steve] Nash and [Pau] Gasol back, they are really going to start jelling as a team and become a

Courtesy of UCLA Athletics better basketball team.

CC: What advice can you give the youth who is striving to reach a career in basketball or possibly follow in your footsteps? SM: Never give up. At a time when I was not as tall as everybody, and I wasn’t as good, I just never gave up on the sport and kept on trying. When you try at anything, even school wise, you always learn to succeed. www.CampusCircle.com Campus Circle 12.20.12 - 1.16.13 17 CALENDARCALENDAR Edward Scissorhands and Home Alone Double Feature Drink Along at the Downtown Independent on Friday, December 21st. 20 th Century Fox WHAT’SHAPPENING All the cool places to go and fun things to do. / / - / / THEATER Price $12 MONDAY, DECEMBER 24 TUES • JAN 15 Dance Music The Nutcracker Swings L.A.
