Introduction - Project and Public Purpose In the growing stage of villages it is indeed a need to spurn the isolation of islands by developing transportation facilities. The construction of roads and bridges will connect the islands to the towns and other places. The movement of the people in the islands will be easiest through the construction of bridges and it shall bring social and economical development to the islands. The proposed Moolampilly-Pizhala Bridge, Approach Road Construction is the Phase 1 of Moolampilly Chathanad Road Project. Proposed Moolampilly - Chathanad Road would connect Ezhikkara and Kadamakkudy Panchayaths to the Vallarpadom NH Connectivity road at Moolampilly. The proposed road will have a width of 30 m and a length of 4.345 Km. When completed this road would connect the highly isolated small islands such as Moolampilly, Pizhala, Kadamakkudy and Chathanad in Ezhikkara and Kadamakkudy Panchayaths in the Vembanad backwater system with each other and with the main land. The people living in the islands depend on the main land for all the basic requirements like their Medical Needs, Educational facilities, etc. The road is expected to provide the required connectivity to the islands. The proposed connectivity of these Panchayaths to the National Highway is very important in view of their socio-economic development and management of any disaster. Once completed, the road will also enable to develop a direct link between NH 17 at North Paravur to ICTT link road which will reduce the travel time between North Paravur and Ernakulam to 30 minutes. It will be the shortest road connectivity from ICTT road to NH 17 at North Paravur. It also connects the islands such as Pizhala, Cheriyakadamakkudy, Valiyakadamakkudy and Chathanad to the main land thereby fulfilling the purpose of formation of GIDA. The “Construction of Moolampilly – Pizhala Bridge and its approaches” is taken as Phase -I of the project. The Phase I envisages the construction of Moolampilly – Pizhala Bridge to a length of 608 m avoiding reclamation of wet land. The project cost come to Rs. 81.75 crores. Government vide G.O. (Rt.) No. 2539/2014/LSGD dated 27/9/2014 have accorded Administrative and Expenditure sanction for the project. 1.2 Location The affected area belongs to Kadamakudy Village, Kanayannor Taluk in Ernakulam District. The proposed bridge will connect Pizhala island to Moolampilly and to ICTT road. 1.3 Size and Attributes of Land Acquisition The proposed project will involve acquisition of 0.6087 hectare of land. Out of the total land requirement 0.5344 hectors is jointly owned by Hexatech Developers (Pvt) Ltd and Nippon Realters (Pvt) Ltd, 3 families own properties which totaling to 0.0611 hectares of land and the rest of 0.0132 hectors of land is jointly owned by 3 families. Out of the 13 affected properties 10 are Wet land, 2 are Nilam Nikathu Purayidam (land converted by filling paddy field) and remaining 1 is Dry land. 1.4 Alternatives considered 90% of the construction of Moolampilly-Pizhala Bridge has completed. The proposed project envisages only the construction of approach road to the bridge. Hence the consideration of alternatives at this stage is not relevant here. 1.5 Social Impacts & Mitigation Measures It appears from the analysis and overview of the act that the provisions of compensation for land acquisition under RTFCTLARR Act, 2013 will be sufficient to manage the social issues. Speedy disbursement of compensation is recommended. Background of the Project and Rationale for Project Moolampilly – Chathanad road project is a major project approved by the General Council of Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA). GIDA was constituted for the integrated Development of the Islands of Kochi, as per GO (Ms) 114/94/LAD dt. 18.5.1994. The Authority was constituted as per the provisions of the Town Planning Act. The jurisdictional area of the Authority covers part of Kochi Corporation and 8 Grama Panchayats namely Elamkunnappuzha, Edavanakkad, Njarakkal, Nayarambalam, Kuzhuppilly, Pallippuram, Kadamakkudy and Mulavukad having a total area of 100 Km2. As part of the development of Islands, GIDA constructed Goshree Bridges. Government vide GO(Ms) 234/2001 dt. 22.8.2001 has given permission to GIDA to sell 25 hectares of reclaimed land for mobilizing fund for the project. Moolampilly – Chathanad road project proposal is to develop a major 4 lane road connecting Moolampilly and Chathanad near North Paravur. It would connect Ezhikkara – Kadamakkudy Panchayaths to the Vallarpadom NH Connectivity road at Moolampilly. The proposed road will have a width of 30 m and a length of 4.345 Km. Regions are tied to each other by road, rail and water transportation networks. Every region has an identity by collective consciousness. When regions are made accessible they become hot spots of conservation. Kochi is an estuarine city. The arrival of the Kochi water metro service brings hopes to the islanders of the Kochi city region. Kadamakudy panchayat and Cheranellur panchayat are two such panchayats having a set of ten islands. This set of ten islands share a common history, religion, festivals and traditions. The islands Valiya Kadamakudy, Cheria Kadamakudy, Kothad, Moolampilly, Chariyam thuruthu, Pizhala, Murickal, Pulikkappuram and Chennur form the Kadamakudy panchayat. The islands South Chittoor and Koren kottai along with Cheranellur constitute the Cheranellur panchayat. These islands were initially occupied by fishermen, farmers and potters mainly from the Latin Christian and Luso Indians community. Chittoor palace constructed by the erstwhile king of Cochin royal family was the summer palace. The king travelled from the hill palace a.k.a the winter palace to the summer palace in boat. This shows how water transportation was a crucial component in those days. Then schools and hospitals were built on these islands thereby adding more housing stock to this place. Due to the Coastal Regulation Zone restrictions and Kerala land utilization order preventing reclamation of wetlands no new developments are happening on these islands. Kettukalakkal festival is the harvest festival of Kadamakudy panchayat.

Introduction Mangrove forests situated at the interface between land and sea in tropical and subtropical latitudes are among the world‟s most productive ecosystems situated at the interface between land and sea in tropical and subtropical latitudes. Often called „tidal forests‟, „coastal woodlands‟ or „oceanic rainforests‟; these ecosystems are of enormous environmental significance and socio-economic value in terms of their role in protecting shores from wind, waves and water currents; preventing soil erosion and siltation; protecting coral reefs, seagrass beds and shipping lanes; supplying wood and other forest products; providing habitats and nutrients for a variety of organisms; and supporting coastal fisheries and livelihoods (Kathiresan and Bingham, 2001; Kathiresan and Qasim, 2005). These ecosystems have high economic values owing to their wide range of ecosystem services (Costanza et al., l997; Khaleel, 2008). Kerala has 590 kms of long narrow coastal line. Mangrove vegetation occurs along the banks of estuarine water bodies and adjacent to the back water channels, in the form of a narrow continuous belt or patches. The regular tidal flooding and fresh water supply from the 41 perennial rivers create a suitable ecological environment leading to the development of mangroves on the fringes of backwaters, estuaries and creeks (Basha 1991).

Corresponding Author: Nify Benny ABSTRACT Ground water from fifteen stations of three zones (Chittoor, Edayakunnam and Cheranellur zones) in Cheranellur Panchayath of Kochi, South India was collected during the premonsoon and post monsoon 2016 to understand the quality of water for drinking purposes. It was found that the chloride content varied from 6.6 to 46.2 mg/l and electrical conductivity ranged between 0.04 and 1 microS/Co. Total hardness showes its maximum abundance as 238 mg/L, meanwhile Calcium and Magnesium exhibited their higher abundance as 81.6 mg/L and 11.7 mg/L respectively. The total dissolved solids in study area showed its maximum concentration at Chittoor zone (519 mg/L). The iron content maximum obtained recorded as 1.8 mg/L (Edayakunnam zone). While comparing the three zones, Cheranellur zone showes all the parameters in very low concentration. The study revealed that all the analytical parameters in the water samples does not overcome the permissible limit prescribed for drinking purposes [1]. Besides this, analysis of Coliform bacteria of all water samples except two samples from Edayakunnam zone provided negative results.

    CITY MOBILITY PLAN - KOCHI 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 GENERAL Kochi, the largest agglomeration in the state of Kerala is the nerve centre of all commercial activities in Kerala. One of the major ports in the country Kochi is blessed with connection with other parts of the country through all modes of transport like road, rail, air and water. NH 17, NH 47, and NH 49 pass through Kochi. Kochi port is located on strategic International route. Broad gauge railway lines link up Kochi to all major cities of the country. Kochi has got one of the three international airports in the state. In addition to all these the regional road linkages are supplemented by an extensive network of navigation routes through the lagoon system, serving the movement of passenger and cargo. Insufficient carrying capacity of the intra-urban and sub urban routes, unhindered development of vast areas as urban extensions due to urbanization, unscientific planning in urban infrastructure development , absence of proper linkage of various forms of transportation etc. have resulted in an inadequate mobility system in the city and suburbs. As part of the comprehensive development of the city an efficient mobility plan has to be formulated. 1.2 STUDY AREA It was only in the beginning of the 19th century that Kochi , which was situated with in the narrow strip of land sandwiched between backwaters and sea outgrew to Ernakulam in the eastern side of the back waters. The narrow streets of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry were not sufficient to take up the travel demand even at that time.
