Congratulations to the winners of the 2008 Consulting-Specifying Engineer Giants 100, which lists the 100 largest engineering firms based on MEP revenue.

In 2008, the 100 top engineering firms account for approximately $18.51 billion in total revenue in the prior year, with revenue for MEP design reported at a total of $4.58 billion.

Comparing such large figures for so many diverse firms with a wide range of accounting procedures is challenging. While some of the participating firms are engaged exclusively in MEP design work, many others are A/E firms or turnkey design-build firms providing MEP design services as a subset of their offerings.

To determine how much of a firm’s revenue is allocated to MEP design, we use a three-step process: First, we ask participating firms for their total revenue and their total design revenue from the prior fiscal or calendar year. Then, we ask them to determine, to the best of their knowledge, the percent of design revenue that can be assigned to the various types of MEP work. Finally, we calculate a simple fraction of the MEP work divided by the total design revenue.

There are significant changes in this year’s ranking. Because substantial merger and acquisition activity occurred in the AEC industry, giants are swallowing giants. In other cases, changes in business models have changed the nature of some firms. These trends are discussed in the Giants 100 feature article that accompanies this poster, also published in the August issue.
