Jannis Kounellis

Untitled (1990-1) Iron, lead and petroleum lamps, 200x180x16 cm

he work Untitled, which belongs to the Alpha Bank Art Collection, is a typical example of Jannis Kounellis’ creative work in the early T 1990s, in which seemingly unrelated materials coexist in an unexpected poetic encounter.

In this particular work, two massive plates of iron serve as the load-bearing surface, from which a third, thinner element made of iron hangs suspended from hooks. Spiral-shaped lead strips, which end in burning petroleum lamps, complete the composition. Thanks to the artist’s compositional ingenuity, the heavy, imposing iron structure acquires an almost religious air of redemption and hope. The metaphysical nature of the light, which shimmers with every change in the wind or movement of the spectator, lends mobility to the work and confirms in the most vivid way Kounellis’ programmatic statement demanding “the return of the poetry with all available means: practice, observation, seclusion, words, images, subversion.”

The work at the MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts.

The work was one of the works displayed in the exhibition Alpha Bank Collection: Greek Art from 1960 until today, which the Bank organized at the Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki (MOMus), in 2018-19. After the Exhibition was over, it was decided, under a loan agreement between Alpha Bank and MOMus, to loan the work to the Museum, where it is currently on display in the latter’s permanent Collection.

Jannis Kounellis, who since the mid-1960s had left his native city of Piraeus to settle in Italy, is one of the few cases of a truly “global” Greek artist, with a significant contribution to developments in virtual arts not only in Europe but also internationally.

One of the pioneers of the Arte Povera movement, Kounellis incorporated in his work, from very early on, simple materials of humble origins, such as earth, coal, burlap sacks, wool, stone, etc. Gradually, his work takes on a strongly conceptual character, by steadily integrating various expressive means which result in compositions with a dramatic, almost ritual character that converse as equals with the architecture of the space that surrounds them, losing nothing of their vitality and interpretative power.

Jannis Kounellis (Piraeus 1936 - Rome 2017) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

H e studied painting, mainly under F. Gentilini, at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, where he settled permanently in 1956. During the 1960s, he was one of the leaders of the Arte Povera movement, presenting his Coal Bin in 1967 and, in 1969, his famous environment Untitled, consisting of 11 live horses, at Rome’s L’Attico gallery. Combining elements from ancient Greek philosophy, the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution, Kounellis creates within the context of his so-called “live paintings”, works deployed in space. Initially in two dimensions, and then in three, he utilizes a variety of media since the mid-1960s, moving towards a form of art that is poetic, humane and critical of contemporary culture. In the 1980s and 1990s, he created works with a dramatic content, in which personal memory is transformed into collective memory, at times taking on the character of a desire to return home that is common to us all. He has presented many solo exhibitions in Europe and in the USA, at major art galleries and museums. In 1994, he organized, under a sponsorship from the J.F. Costopoulos Foundation, his first retrospective exhibition in Greece, which was presented aboard the freighter Ionion, at the . He also participated in group and international exhibitions and events, such as the Paris Biennale (1967, 1969, 1971), Documenta (1972, 1977, 1982), the Venice Biennale (1972, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1993), the Istanbul Biennial (1993), and the Biennale of Sydney (2008).

Rhodes, the island of Helios

Silver tetradrachm of Rhodes, 230-205 BC Obverse: Radiant head of Helios. Reverse: ΑΑ

And now, O Muse Calliope, daughter of Zeus, begin to sing of glowing Helios […] As he rides in his chariot, he shines upon men and deathless gods, and piercingly he gazes with his eyes from his golden helmet. Bright rays beam dazzlingly from him. […]

Homeric Hymn, 31. To Helios

ight and darkness, the rising and setting of the sun, and the various weather phenomena have always perplexed humans and L fired their imagination. In the image of the solar disc with its rays, people saw a blond-haired face wearing a radiant crown, and thus they created the god Helios (Sun).

CULTURE SPECIAL • STORIES RECOUNTED BY COINS

Helios is the one who sees and rules over all things, the Helios Panoptes (“the all-seeing”). With his chariot, ablaze with fire and drawn by two or four horses, he travels on the sky daily, from his palace in the East to that in the West. In the morning, he wakes up on one side of Oceanus, leaves behind him Aia, his own land, and rises to the center of the heavenly vault, from where he descends to the other side of Oceanus. Every morning, Thetis in the East unlocks the gates to his coach-house, where his chariot is kept, while in the evening Poseidon awaits him in the West, to cater to his horses that need to rest. During the night, a winged bed transports the sleeping god from the West to the East, so that he can begin his journey again.

Helios’ principal place of worship, where annual festivals were held in his honor, was the island of Rhodes. According to myth, when the gods drew lots for their realms on earth, Rhodes was submerged by the sea and was not visible. During the process Helios was away on his routine daily journey, and the gods forgot to draw a lot for him. When Zeus heard Helios’ chariot approaching, he prepared to start the process all over again. Yet as soon as Helios saw the island emerging from the sea, he requested it to be given to him. Thus, Rhodes became the god’s island, which he had under his protection and upon which he shone with his rays.

Helios was united with the Nymph Rhode and had seven sons, the Heliades. The celebrated Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, was dedicated to the shining god, who had saved the island from a siege.

Greece outside Greece By Dr Dimitra Tsangari, Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection Greek Antiquities in France Paris In the center of Paris, on the right bank of the Seine, is one of the world’s largest and oldest museums – the Louvre Museum. Initially built as a defensive fortress by the King of France Philip II Augustus, in 1190, it was gradually undergoing significant changes over the centuries, depending on its uses. From a fortress, it was transformed into a residence of the kings of France and, after the French Revolution, into an art museum. In 2019, the Louvre Museum had 9.6 million visitors, maintaining its title as the most visited art museum in the world.

The Louvre Museum (Musée du Louvre) The Museum opened its doors for the first time in August 1793 as a “Central Museum of Arts”, and is today considered one of the largest in the world. In an area of about 73,000 square meters, 38,000 objects are on display, representing just 8% of all items in the Museum’s collections. Overall, it is estimated that the Museum's collections comprise more than 445,000 objects in total. Among them, Greek antiquities have a prominent place, as some of them are among the most famous original Greek works of art and, at the same time, among the Museum’s prime exhibits.

The Lady of Auxerre (“La Dame d’Auxerre”), ca. 640 B.C. One of the most representative works of the Daedalic style. The statue probably depicts a goddess, with her right hand bent at the elbow and touching her breast, in a gesture that is typical of a mother goddess, while her left hand is held straight. It comes most likely from Crete, where its “twin sister”, the “Kore of Eleutherna”, one of the major finds of the excavations at the site of the Orthi Petra Necropolis, is exhibited. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt4wU8oSADw

Kore from the Cheramyes group, from the Temple of Hera in Samos, ca. 570 B.C. The Kore is holding a hare in her left hand and is very similar to two other Kores, one in Berlin’s Pergamonmuseum and another one in the Archaeological Museum of Samos. The one in the Louvre bears an inscription with the name CHERAMYES.

The head was found at the Acropolis of Athens, in 1877, and is on display at the Louvre, while fragments of the bodies of the horseman and of his horse were found ten years later and are exhibited at the Acropolis Museum. It is the work of a master sculptor of the Archaic era, incorporating many novel elements.

The original head, together with moulds taken from the fragments of the horseman's body and of its horse, are exhibited at the Louvre Museum. The original fragments are exhibited at the Acropolis Museum, together with a mould taken from the head.

The Winged Victory (“Nike”) of Samothrace, ca. 190-180 B.C. Nike, a deity familiar to and loved by the Greeks, is presented with her wings wide open, having just landed on the prow of a ship. This suggests that the sculpture was made on order, after a victory in a sea battle. The work’s exact dating is still debated.

Aphrodite, known as “Venus de Milo”, 150-125 B.C. This statue was found in 1820 on the island of Milos, together with a part of its inscribed plinth, which gave the name [Agis]andros or [Alex]andros, son of Menides, as its sculptor. The goddess, whose upper body is exposed, is draped in a himation and stands in swaying posture. Her right hand is held downwards at an angle, while in left one she is assumed to have been holding an apple. It is a masterpiece that combines the features of the Classical era with the sophistication of the late Hellenistic period.

Apollo of Piombino (Apollon Piompino), 1st century. Found in the sea off the coast of Piombino, opposite the island of Elba, in 1832. It is a Roman copy of the original statue of Apollo, created in the 5th century B.C. by Kanachos for the god’s temple in Militos or for the Temple of Ismenius Apollo in Thebes. The figure is identified as Apollo, since it is considered almost certain that it was holding a bow in its left hand and a phiale in its right. From the ΑΑΑΑΑ that the work was an offering to the goddess Athena.

Myson Amphora / Croesus on his Pyre, 500-490 B.C. Attic red-figure amphora, attributed to vase painter Myson. Croesus (according to the inscription) is shown at the top of a high wooden structure made of logs (pyre), while another bearded figure, Euthymus, is preparing to light the pyre using two torches. It is one of the rarest depictions of this particular historic event from the life of Croesus, King of Lydia.

Andokides Amphora / Hercules in the Underworld, 520-515 B.C. side is painted using the black-figure technique. On the amphora’s red-figure side, Hercules is shown in the Underworld, when he was trying to tame two-headed Cerberus. The goddess Athena stands at the hero’s side.

The Bank’s first business activities in the insurance sector

Title representing one share of “Emporiki” Insurance Company S.A., 1940 Alpha Bank Historical Archives

n the aftermath of the 1929-1932 crisis, a large number of smaller banks declared bankruptcy. Yet Banque de Credit Commercial Hellénique, as Alpha Bank was named back then, not only did not face the specter of bankruptcy, but did not even have to resort to reducing its own funds in order to offset the losses it had sustained over those years.

However, the future did not have in store a path of smooth progress for the Bank. On the contrary, the years that followed until the end of the interwar period were the most unenviable of its history until then. As the activities which might generate profits were extremely limited during those times of economic hardship, the Bank sought to branch out to new activities, going far beyond those traditionally undertaken by a commercial bank.

It shifted its Interest to the brokerage of insurance products, an option that at least the timing of the period raised expectations. In early 1933 –in other words, as soon as the Greek economy showed signs of recovery– Banque de Credit Commercial Hellénique announced its agreement with “Anatoli” Insurance Company S.A., which had been active in the insurance sector since 1906 and had significantly contributed to the organization of the life insurance business. Under the agreement, the Bank began to represent, through its Branch Managers, life and endowment policies. A few months later, the Bank considered a potential partnership with Assurances Générales de France, for representing the latter’s hail insurance business.

In 1935, the Bank concluded an agreement with another insurance company, “National Life and Good Faith”, founded in 1918 by the National Economy Bank and the Embirikos brothers. Again, through its Branches, the Bank is brokering life and endowment insurance policies, as well as fire and transportation ones, always retaining the freedom to also represent other insurance companies.

However, those insurance brokering activities –with all the difficulties they caused due to the competing features of the products offered by different companies– were nothing more than a transitional stage in the Bank’s plan for a new business scheme, which would be led by it and would seek to acquire a share of the insurance business market. The controls imposed on foreign currency had already led foreign insurance companies, which until then had significant activities in Greece, to withdraw from the Greek market or at least to limit their operations in the country. As a result, the opportunities that emerged for the development of similar activities were quite attractive.

The Bank took decisive steps in order to implement its plan. In September 1939, the Board of Directors was briefed about the results of the study it had commissioned with a view to setting up an insurance company that would cover fire, marine, life accidents and commercial operations. Almost immediately after that, the General Management concluded an agreement with a circle of entrepreneurs, “clients and friends” of the Bank, which on October 25, 1939, led to the establishment of “Emporiki” Insurance Company S.A.

In April 1940, the Branches announced the launch of the operations of the Bank’s insurance subsidiary, although the latter’s activity would initially be limited to fire insurance products only.
