Annexure-District Survey Report 10/17/2018 Home TamilNadu Map Sivagangai District Profile Print SIVAGANGAI DISTRICT PROFILE • Sivaganga district is bounded by Pudukkottai district in the Northeast, Ramanathapuram district in the East, Virudhunagar district in the Southwest, and Madurai in the West. • The District is located between 09º 30'N to 10º 25'N Latitude, and 78º 07'E to 79º 01’E Longitude and has an areal extent of 4143 sq.km. • There are 12 Blocks, 445 Villages and 3352 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage: • The northern part of the District is drained by the rivers Pambar, Manimuttar and Sarugani rivers and the southern part is drained by Vaigai River. • The northern, western part of the district comprising of Tiruppathur taluk is a high ground studded will hillocks and residual hills. • The stretch trending north east to south west extending from Puduvayal to Manamadurai is an upland. The rest of the area is a plain alluvial terrain. Rainfall: The average annual rainfall and the 5 years rainfall collected from IMD, Chennai is as follows: Acutal Rainfall in mm Normal Rainfall in mm 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 724.80 964.0 1116.20 710.9 967.5 872.46 Geology: Rock Type Geological Formation Sandstone, Laterite, Silt, Sedimentary Rock 60% Alluvium, Charnockite, Gneiss, Hard Rock 40% Granite, Quartzite Hydrogeology: Unconfined in hard rocks.Semi confined Type of Aquifer to Confined in sedimentary. Aquifer parameters Hard rock formation Sedimentary Well yield in lpm 50 - 150 400 - 2200 Transmissivity (T)m2/day 20 - 70 300 - 2500 Permeability (K)(m/day)) 1.02 - 2.54 20.45 - 64.45 Depth of Water level 3 m to 10m Ground Water Level:: The Ground Water levels from the 79 number of observation wells of TWAD have been analysed for Post-Monsoon and Pre- Monsoon. Since 1991 average Ground water level in m Below Ground Level for pre and post monsoon is as follows: 1/3 10/17/2018 Sustainability:: With a view to enhance the Sustainability of the drinking water sources, recharge structures are being implemented by TWAD Board under various State and Central Government assistances. The demand of water is increasing day by day. So, groundwater resources play a vital role for additional demand by farmers and Industries and domestic usage leads to rapid development of groundwater. About 63% of available groundwater resources are now being used. However, the development is not uniform all over the State, and in certain districts of Tamil Nadu, intensive groundwater development had led to declining water levels, increasing trend of Over Exploited and Critical Firkas, saline water intrusion, etc. ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP The geographical extent of Sivagangai District is 4, 18,900 hectares or 4,189 sq.km. Accounting for 3.22% of the geographical area of Tamilnadu State. The district has well laidout roads and railway lines connecting all major towns within and outside the State for administrative purpose. For administrative purpose , the district has been divided into 6 Taluks, 12 Blocks and 38 Firkas.

    religions Article Sprouts of the Body, Sprouts of the Field: Identification of the Goddess with Poxes in South India Perundevi Srinivasan Religious Studies, Siena College, Loudonville, NY 12211, USA; [email protected] Received: 1 January 2019; Accepted: 22 February 2019; Published: 27 February 2019 Abstract: In south India, when a person is afflicted with poxes of any variety, it is believed that the goddess Mariyamman has “arrived” in the person. The Tamil term “ammai” means pustules or “pearls” of poxes as well as mother/goddess. Indigenous discourses, gleaned from resources, such as songs and narratives, facilitate our interrogation of the Hindu “religious experience” that underscores the immanent and eminent manifestations of the deity and the dimension of benevolence associated with pox-affliction. Asking what might be the triggering conditions for identifying the pox-afflicted body as the goddess, I problematize the prevalent scholarly characterization of such affliction in terms of “possession” of a body, taken as a “mute facticity,” by an external agent, namely, the goddess. Drawing from ethnographic sources and classical Tamil texts, I argue that the immanent identification of the body as the goddess and conceptualization of her sovereign authority over the body during affliction are facilitated by an imagistic relationship of the afflicted body with an agricultural field, which is conventionally regarded as feminine in the Tamil context. Accordingly in the Kottakaraiyar sub basin of Phase the following works have been proposed. i) Lining of irrigation Head channel below the tanks sluice using c.c. M 15 as per sketch enclosed ii) Installing flow measuring device in the irrigation channel as per sketch iii) L.S provision of 2.8 % for Provision of labour welfare @ 0.30 % and provision for contingencies, advertisement charges , photographic charges @ 2.5% This proposal comprising of 89 packages for an amount of Rs.930.02lakhs including L.S Provision of Rs.25.35lakhs. lining of head irrigation channel for 18044 m length and installing 437 nos of flow measuring devices in the irrigation channels are proposed in this proposal.
