Ten years have passe d since this list was co mpile d and there ha ve be en a nu mbe r of cha nges to nam es (bo th com mon and sc ientific) as w ell as three add itions an d two deletio ns to the l ist of speci es. Addit ionall y, we have gai ned a bett er unders tandin g of l ocal status and dis tributi on, and have amended and updated the flight seasons and status codes to more accu ratel y ref lect the re lati ve abundance of species . More refer ences for the amateur natur alist have also been published, incl uding fiel d guides that are releva nt to ou r area , and w e now pro vide a n upd ated list o f these as w ell. INTR ODUCT ION In our presentation we hope to provide a modern checklist which i ncludes current nomenclature as well as notes on the environments where t hese ancient, beauti ful and fascinating insects m ay be fo und. Within the Ottawa-Gatineau area, 120 species are now known to have occurred, and an additi onal 6 ta xa are known with in 25 km of t he 50 km radius of th e Peace Tower on P arliam ent H ill. This re prese nts one of the hig hest div ersities o f Od ona ta in North America for such a small geographic region. An amazing example is t he Britannia Conservation Area in Ottawa, approximately 1 km 2 in a rea, wher e 57 species have now been r ecorded—m ore than the f auna of t he enti re Brit ish I sles (Bracken and Lewis, 2004 )! Stand ardiz ed E nglish co mm on an d scien tific name s are fro m “T he O don ata of N orth America” produced by the Dragonf ly Soci ety of the Ameri cas (DSA) (September 200 4), with u pda tes in 20 06. T he fam ily orde r follow s the stand ard a s it is curren tly acce pted . Spe cies scie ntific nam es are , for co nven ience , listed alp hab etically. Status inf ormation is given f or adu lt insec ts onl y, an d is base d on personal 115 Guts:Guts 6/20/08 3:27 PM Page 14 comm unications with local authorities as well as our o wn obse rvations over the p ast 10 seasons. Where we found gaps i n local inf ormation, we consul ted E. M. Walker (The Odonata of Canada and Alas ka) and oth er ref erences. A lis t of r eferen ces used for this article, as well as recomme nded publications and acknow ledgem ents, app ears a t the end of the ch ecklist. It is interest ing to consider the coarse geology of the Ottawa-Gatineau regi on. The Qu ébe c half of the district is pr imarily P recam brian , metav olcan ic (mine ral soil) w ith only a thi n margin of Ordovician as well as the Champlain Sea influence al ong the north ern b ound ary of the Ottaw a Rive r. Th e O ntario sid e is almo st exclusiv ely Ord ovicia n (do lomitic) limesto ne, with a much mor e exten sive influen ce of the late Qu aterna ry Pe riod (Cha mpla in Sea dep osition s). W e hop e that thes e bas ic geo logic factors are ref lected withi n the body of the species ecotone notes, as well as i n the column s f or pres ence w it hin Québec an d Ontar io. CHAN GES/UPDATES TO THE LIST OF SPECIES Add itions: No rthern B luet ( Enallagma annex um – form erly E. cyat higer um ) and Vernal Blu et (E. ve rna le ) – their sta tus and pattern of oc curre nce w ere p oor ly know n in 19 97. Split just a few y ears ago, it now appears t hat t hey are both widel y dis tri buted regionally, the former common in sandpits and sewage lagoons of the Quaternary “flat cou ntry” an d the la tter frequ ent in we tlands o f “shield c ountr y.” Rap ids C lubtail ( Gomphus quadricol or ) – f irs t re corded i n our di str ict in J une 2002 on the Mississippi River i n Pakenham, ON (Catling, 2002). Black S addleb ags ( Tram ea la cera ta ) – A long distance migrant f irst r ecorded in our district in 2 001 and a gain the followin g year. T hese re cord s were a surp rise as this species had not prev iousl y been rec orded in eas tern Ont ario away from th e Great Lakes (Bracken and Lew is, 2002). Deletion s: Un icorn Club tail ( Arigomphus vill osipes ) – This was incl uded based on a report ed spec imen th at has no t been mad e ava ilable fo r con firmatio n. W ithin On tario this species is know n to occur o nly as far north as Durh am and York counties (Ro thfels, 200 3), ther efore it has be en dr opp ed fro m ou r list. Jane’s Meado whawk ( Sympetr um janae ) – Afte r much st udy thi s newl y descri bed species (Carle, 1993) has been dis missed by the DSA and is thought to be an 116 Guts:Guts 6/20/08 3:27 PM Page 15 intergrade in t he Cherry-faced Meado whawk ( S. i nter num ) and Ruby Meadowhawk (S. r ubicundul um ) species complex. Cha nges to Com mon Nam es: Northern Spreadwing ( Lest es di sjunc tus ) – C hang ed fro m C omm on S prea dwing . Two subsp ecies have recently been split according to morphological dif ferences and range of occurrence . Ve rnal B luet ( En allag ma vern ale ) – Chan ged f rom Gloy d’s Bluet . At the ti me of our original l ist t his taxon did not have a common name, therefore we “coined” one that we consi dered appropriat e. Violet Dancer ( Argia fumipennis violacaea ) – C hang ed fro m V ariab le Da ncer. Thre e subspe cies have be en given their own vernaculars. Eas tern Le ast Club tail ( Styl ogomphus albi sty lus ) – C hang ed fro m Le ast Club tail. This vernacular was modified foll owing the naming of a new species f rom the interi or. Comm on Pond hawk ( Ery them is simp licicollis ) – Changed from E astern Pondhawk. Two taxa (east ern and wes tern) are now consi dered conspeci fic. Belted Whitef ace ( Leu cor rh in ia pr oxi ma ) – C hang ed fro m R ed-wa isted W hiteface . The new nam e reflects differences i n the appearance of two populations (eastern and wester n) and is more appropriat e. Cha lk-fronted Co rpo ral ( Ladona jul ia ) – C hang ed fro m C halk-fro nted S kimm er. This taxon is better treated wit hin the genus of “smaller” Skimmers known as the “Co rpo rals.” Autumn M eadowhawk ( Sympetr um vici num ) – Changed fr om Yellow-l egged Mea dowhawk. The legs of this species darken wi th age. Also, i t is t he latest -fl ying of the M eado whawks. Cha nges to Scientific N ames: No rthern B luet ( Enallagma annex um ) – Ch ang ed f rom E. cyat higer um , as it has just recently been separated fr om that species, i ts European cousin. Spik etail family ( Cordule gastr idae ) – At the ti me of our original l ist, it was t hought that the t hree speci es of Spi ketai ls meri ted separa te gener ic desi gnati on. Here we 117 Guts:Guts 6/20/08 3:27 PM Page 16 use the one ge nus Cordulegaster for the f amily, as the previously used genera Taen iogaster and Zoraena are n o long er bei ng us ed. Cha lk-fronted Co rpo ral ( Lad ona julia ) – previo usly placed in the genu s Libe llula , recent DNA studies have shown that this t axon is best tr eated in the dist inct genus Ladona (Artiss 1999, in Catl ing 2000). Co mm on W hitetail ( Pla them is lydia ) – as with L. j uli a (abo ve), it is thou ght that this taxon de serves its own genus, b ased on recent DN A studies. SPECIES KNO WN FROM ADJAC ENT REG IONS (within 25 km o f the 50 km radius of the O ttawa -Gatineau D istrict) Sub arctic B luet ( Coenagri on int errogat um ) – Danford Lake f en, Québec Zigzag Darner ( Aes hna sitchen sis ) – Danford Lake f en, Québec Subarctic Darner ( Aeshna subarctic a) – Danford Lake f en, Québec Bro ok S nake tail ( Ophiogomphus asper sus ) – Petit e Nation Riv er, Québec Incu rvat e Emeral d ( Som atoc hlora incu rvata ) – Danford Lake f en, Québec Blue Dasher ( Pa chy dipla x lon gipe nnis ) – B urritt’s Ra pids, O ntario HAB ITAT AND STATUS CO DES IN THE C HECK LIST Habitat ( ecotone) not es are der ived from combinations of the following descri ptions and their codes.
