GIVE THANKS— ANYWAY! 148 Life is hard. Give thanks. By the fall of 1863, President Abraham Lincoln had faced enormous challenges and loss. > A war had divided the country. > In July alone, the battle at Gettysburg resulted in over 51,000 casualties, including over 7,000 deaths. > Riots were raging in New York City over emancipation and draft laws. > His son, Willie, had died the year before. With immense challenges facing him, the President did what might seem unusual today: he called for a day of thanksgiving. Despite everything that was happening, Lincoln wanted to praise and thank his Creator for a year “filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies … gracious gifts of the Most High God.”10 Even though the war raged on, Lincoln repeated this the following year with a second proclamation for a day of thanksgiving. Abraham Lincoln was not the first commander-in-chief to call for thanksgiving in the thick of war. Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, did the same thing. The biblical account of what the people faced—and how they faced it—contains great truth for us today. BARRY CAMPBELL Barry Campbell is lead pastor at Highland Baptist Church in Redmond, Oregon. The Passage 2 Chronicles 20:10-12,14-17,20-22,29-30 The Bible Meets Life Some days it’s tough to read or watch the news. > Terrorist bomb kills 20 and injures dozens in market square. > Corporation lays off thousands of workers, announcing all production will go offshore. > Multi-car crash shuts down interstate for six hours. Because of these realities, it can be difficult to connect with the apostle Paul’s command for us to “Give thanks in everything” (1 Thess. 5:18). Give thanks in everything? Is that even possible when so many things go wrong, both around the world and in our own lives? Thankfully, the answer is yes— and the Scriptures show us how. During the reign of King Jehoshaphat in Judah, God’s people once again faced difficult times. Yet they found a way to remain thankful. And so can we. The Setting The events described in 2 Chronicles 20 took place following the division of the Northern Kingdom and the Southern Kingdom (see 2 Chron. 10). The Northern Kingdom was known as Israel and the Southern Kingdom was called Judah. The capital of the Southern Kingdom was Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat was the fourth king to reign over Judah. The events found in this story concern Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah. This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast number, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow, go down against them. You will see them coming up the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley facing the Wilderness of Jeruel. 17 You do not have to fight this battle. Position yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD. He is with you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Tomorrow, go out to face them, for Yahweh is with you.’” 20 In the morning they got up early and went out to the wilderness of Tekoa. As they were about to go out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem. Believe in Yahweh your God, and you will be established; believe in His prophets, and you will succeed.” 21 Then he consulted with the people and appointed some to sing for the LORD and some to praise the splendor of His holiness. When they went out in front of the armed forces, they kept singing: “Give thanks to the LORD, for His faithful love endures forever.” 22 The moment they began their shouts and praises, the LORD set an ambush against the Ammonites, Moabites, and the inhabitants of Mount Seir who came to fight against Judah, and they were defeated. 29 The terror of God was on all the kingdoms of the lands when they heard that Yahweh had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was quiet, for his God gave him rest on every side. 152 SPECIAL FOCUS THE POINT We can give thanks in every situation. GET INTO THE STUDY 5 minutes DISCUSS: Question #1 on page 121 of Notes the PSG: “What’s your favorite way to express thanks?” ACTIVITY (OPTIONAL): Prior to Question #1, give each group member a blank note card and access to a range of writing utensils (crayons, colored pencils, markers, and so on). Challenge them to create the corniest “thank you” card they can imagine. This can include illustrations, poems, statements, and so on. Note: Asking group members to think of corny ways to say “thank you” will help them approach the topic of thanksgiving from a new direction. After this activity, use Question #1 to help group members switch gears and discuss their favorite ways to express thanks with sincerity. Through the Bible Study 2 Chronicles 18-22

THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY 2 CHRONICLES 18-22 The children’s series VeggieTales has sold over 52 million DVD and VHS copies. Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber teach biblical values to kids. The series became so popular it was sold to NBC and added to its Saturday morning kids programming. But it didn’t take long for NBC editors to go to work. Non-historical references to God and the Bible were sliced - even Bob and Larry’s trademark ending - “Remember kids, God made you special, and loves you very much…” - is gone. The vitamins were cooked out of VeggieTales. The series’ creator, Phil Vischer confessed, had he known how much the shows would change he wouldn’t have signed on to the network deal. Vischer sums it up this way, “VeggieTales is religious – NBC is not.” It’s a classic case of what the Bible calls being “unequally yoked.” 2 Corinthians 6:14 says it best, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” This is a farming analogy… Different species of animals, with diverse natures, harnessed together will struggle to cooperate. They’ll pull in opposite directions. And when a Christian becomes entangled with a non- Christian in a legally binding relationship some kind of compromise is the inevitable outcome. !1 It happens when a believer and an unbeliever go into business. It happens when a believer and an unbeliever get married. It happens when NBC and VeggieTales partner together. And it happened when Jehoshaphat joined forces with Israel. 2 Chronicles 18, “Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance; and by marriage he allied himself with Ahab.” Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, married the daughter of his northern rival, King Ahab.

Do not treat fasting as a ritual, but rather as another communication tool to strengthen your relationship with Jesus Christ. 6 Fasting Effectiveness • Fasting for Optimal Effectiveness – Fasting must be accompanied by the other Spiritual Disciplines to hear clearly from God: Spiritual Disciplines Descriptions Prayer Two-way communication with God Bible Study Seeking God’s face through His Word Worship Acknowledging God for His many Attributes Praise Thanksgiving for what He has done and what He can do Faith Walking in what you believe about God through Trust and Obedience Dedication - Meditation Stilling away from distractions to focus on God 7 Our Study: 2 Chronicles 20:1-30 • The story of King Jehoshaphat and Judah, and the enemies who plan to attack them, is a wonderful account of how we should Prepare for Victory! HOW to TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (How to Deal with Crises) 2 Chronicles 20

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (How to Deal with Crises) 2 Chronicles 20 Introduction The title of my message this morning is How To Train Your Dragon. If you don’t have small children or grandchildren, this title may not mean anything to you. But if you do have small children or grandchildren, you may be familiar with the animated film by the same name. I highly recommend it (I’ve probably seen it in part a dozen times or so!). In this message let the crises we often face be our dragons. I’m preaching this message particularly because of a dragon W.C.A. is facing: inadequate financial resources to meet our immediate needs and the looming economic storm. As I’ve been thinking about our dragon, King Jehoshaphat’s prayer in 2 Chronicles 20:12 came to mind. I’ve modified it to reflect our particular crisis: O . God . we have no [resources] to face this [great need] that is [before] us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you." I want to use our church’s crisis to help us see how we can train the dragons in our own personal lives. We begin by looking to God’s Word, because it is a lamp to [our] feet and a light for [our] path. (Ps. 119:105) And the path before us is not clear, and it can be alarming. The portion of God’s Word I want us to look at is 2 Chronicles 20:1-2, a familiar incident that provides clear instructions for training dragons.

YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE 2 Chronicles BOB UTLEY PROFESSOR OF HERMENEUTICS (BIBLE INTERPRETATION) STUDY GUIDE COMMENTARY SERIES OLD TESTAMENT VOL. 7B BIBLE LESSONS INTERNATIONAL MARSHALL, TEXAS 2017 INTRODUCTION TO 1 AND 2 CHRONICLES I. NAME OF THE BOOK A. The name of the book in Hebrew is “the words (events) of the days (years).” This is used in the sense of “a chronicle of the years.” These same words occur in the title of several books mentioned as written sources in 1 Kings 14:19,29; 15:7,23,31; 16:5,14,20,27; 22:46. The phrase itself is used over thirty times in 1 and 2 Kings and is usually translated “chronicles.” B. The LXX entitled it “the things omitted (concerning the Kings of Judah).” This implies that Chronicles is to Samuel and Kings what the Gospel of John is to the Synoptic Gospels. See How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth, by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart, pp. 127-148. As the Gospel writers under inspiration (see Special Topic: Inspiration) had the right to select, adapt, and arrange the life of Jesus (not invent actions or words), so too, the inspired authors of OT narratives (see Expository Hermeneutics: An Introduction, by Elliott E. Johnson, p. 169). This selection, adaptation, and chronological/thematic arrangement of words/events was to convey theological truth. History is used as a servant of theology. Chronicles has suffered, much as the Gospel of Mark did. They were both seen as “Readers Digest” summaries and not “a full history.” This is unfortunate! Both have an inspired message.
