Biography: Mary Elizabeth (“Beth”) Springer Hone was born in 1918 in Halkirk, Alberta. She attended Saskatoon Normal School (1936) and received her BA from the University of Toronto (1941). During 1958-1959 studied ceramics at the School of Art in Farnham, England. She taught school in Saskatchewan and British Columbia prior to joining the Regina College School of Art extension program as a ceramics instructor, where she taught from 1959-1966. In 1968 she and Ann James established the Hone-James Studio in Regina, which they ran successfully until 1973 when their partnership was dissolved. She works with stoneware, porcelain, batik, and ceramic sculpture. John Ramsey McGregor (“Mac”) Hone was born in 1920 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He was a participant in the early Emma Lake Art Schools, and studied with Gus Kenderdine, Ernest Lindner, Jack Shadbolt, and Will Barnet. He received a BA (1941) from the University of Saskatchewan, and from 1958-1959 studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London, England. He taught school in Saskatchewan and British Columbia from 1947-1979; during the 1950s he also taught art class in Moose Jaw for the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Campus). From 1976-1981 he served on the Minister’s Committee on the Fine Arts in Education. His artworks included serigraph, woodcut, wood engraving, watercolour, oil, acrylic, photography, and sculpture. Mac died in 2007; Beth died in 2011. Both Mac and Beth Hone have had their work shown extensively in solo and group exhibitions. Scope and Content: This fonds documents the lives and careers of Beth and Mac Hone, including their extensive involvement with the art community in Saskatchewan; the Unitarian church; teaching and teacher organizations; and other varied interests. It includes significant materials relating to their families and their children. Arrangement: This guide is organized into three main accruals: 1. First accrual – Boxes 1-45; page 3 2. Second accrual – Boxes 46-59; page 72 3. Third accrual – Boxes 60-100; page 97 Each accrual has been organized into similar series. Box numbers are consecutive across all accruals. Restrictions: There are few restrictions on access – restricted files have been designated as such in the guide. Please consult an archivist. Scope and Content: This fonds contains documentation relating to the Hones’ extensive involvement in the arts--notably, the art scene in Saskatchewan during the early 1940s and the establishment of the Saskatoon Arts Centre, the Art Association of Saskatoon, “The Prospectors,” along with correspondence from friends Ernie Lindner, Nonie Mulcaster, Robert Hurley, etc. The Hone’s own artistic work is also well documented; as is their exceptional community work: with the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation, UNESCO, Voice of Women, Regina Community Clinic, etc. The Hones were also actively involved with the Unitarian Fellowship, Regina. Additionally, this fonds contains business records from ADM Hone, Mac’s father, documenting early land / mining / logging rights and development in the west. An extensive collection of slides documents the art and architecture of numerous countries visited by the Hones; including personal and commercial images of international works of art. The slide collection also illustrates many of the themes used in the Hones’ art, and documents their family, friends, and interests. Arrangement: This fonds is organized into 10 series: 1.
