Repatterning: Improving the Reliability of Android Applications with an Adaptation of Refactoring by Bradley Christian Dennis A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Auburn, Alabama August 2, 2014 Keywords:Refactoring, Code Smells, Patterns, Non-functional Requirements, Verification Copyright 2014 by Bradley Christian Dennis Committee: David Umphress, Chair, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering James Cross, Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering Dean Hendrix, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering Jeffrey Overbey, Assistant Research Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering Abstract Studies of Android applications show that NullPointerException, OutofMemoryError, and BadTokenException account for a majority of errors observed in the real world. The technical debt being born by Android developers from these systemic errors appears to be due to insufficient, or erroneous, guidance, practices, or tools. This dissertation proposes a re- engineering adaptation of refactoring, called repatterning, and pays down some of this debt. We investigated 323 Android applications for code smells, corrective patterns, or enhancement patterns related to the three exceptions. I then applied the discovered patterns to the locations suggested by the code smells in fifteen randomly selected applications. I measured the before and after reliability of the applications and observed a statistically significant improvement in reliability for two of the three exceptions. I found repatterning had a positive effect on the reliability of Android applications. This research demonstrates how refactoring can be generalized and used as a model to affect non-functional qualities other than the restructuring related attributes of maintainability and adaptability. -

Application software, commonly called Apps, designed to identify pretty much anything can be downloaded on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Once downloaded users can use pictures and GPS coordinates to receive sought after information. Stars/Sky/Weather SkyView - https://www.terminaleleven.com/skyview/iphone/ From all the stargazing apps on the market, SkyView is a unique “augmented reality” app where you can view all the stars and objects of the night sky through your device’s camera in your real-world environment. One major highlight of this app is that it’s both free and available for iOS and Android devices. The app has hundreds of astronomical objects you can search for, and the app will point to where those objects are in your night sky. Sky Map https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.stardroid&hl=en_US Sky Map is a free Android app similar in appearance to Sky View, with the major difference being that it is not an augmented reality app. The night sky in Sky Taking a Look at the Night Sky by App Map is displayed based on your location rather than through the camera, so you have to use best judgment to estimate which stars are which when using this app. -

525 Appendix DRIOD App Guide This appendix includes information on apps you can download and install for your DROID. We’ve included QR codes, so you can use a barcode scanner app on your DROID to navigate directly to a given app. Read Chapter 17, “Exploring the Android Market,” for more information on QR codes. CAUTION: We want to make you aware that apps may change frequently. Some of the apps listed in this guide will have been updated, others may be gone altogether, and new and improved ones added by the time you read this book. Please use the apps listed in this guide as a starting point to become familiar with what is possible and help you find some useful apps. Document Tools If you work in an office, you may need to deal with documents. At the time of publication, there are no solutions to reading Microsoft OneNote on Android. That may come in the future, but for now we recommend using Evernote instead. Of the document-management software we tested, DataViz’s Docs to Go and QuickOffice Mobile Suite from QuickOffice were the most stable and offered the best interfaces for both viewing and editing documents. However, you may have different results with different types of documents, so the best approach is to use free trial versions of apps that interest you and compare how well these apps display the types of documents you typically use. Docs to Go allows some editing and formatting, and it will even handle DOCX files. It’s not a replacement for a full-sized word processor, but it is a good complement to one. -
