  • River Basin Management Planning River Deveron Catchment Summary
River Basin Management Planning River Deveron catchment summary 1 Introduction The River Deveron catchment (shown on Map 1) includes the major tributaries of the River Bogie, River Isla and Turriff Water. The Deveron rises in west Aberdeenshire and then flows through Huntly and Turriff before joining the North Sea at Banff. Map 1: River Deveron catchment The catchment includes areas of moorland, farmland and forestry, and also has a number of distilleries including Chivas Regal, Glendronach and Knock. The Deveron and its tributaries are important salmon, sea trout and brown trout fisheries. Further information on the River Deveron catchment can be found on SEPA’s interactive map at www.sepa.org.uk/water/river_basin_planning.aspx 2 Classification summary of the catchment SEPA monitors the water environment on an ongoing basis and uses the resulting data to produce annual classifications. The summarised results for 2008 show that the catchment contains: 8 water bodies at good ecological status. 18 water bodies at moderate ecological status, 5 water bodies at poor ecological status and 5 water bodies at bad ecological status. Table 1 gives further details of these water bodies. There are no Heavily Modified Water Bodies in the catchment. The catchment is underlain by a number of groundwater bodies. The majority of these are classified as being at good status for both water quality and quantity, but the eastern catchment around Turriff has issues relating to over abstraction and diffuse pollution. These are discussed further in Table 1. The Deveron catchment joins the sea at the Banff and Macduff coastal water body which is classified as being at good ecological status.

  • Origins Part 4: Auchenhamperis and Monymusk References
Origins Part 4: Auchenhamperis and Monymusk References This section examines the possible link between the early Davidson family from Auchenhamperis and the use of the St Giles motif. While researching the use of the New Davidson arms in the 1500s, it became clear, as is set out below, that all the known examples of arms in the north-east of Scotland were those of members of the © Clan Davidson Association 2008 extensive and expanding Davidson family from Auchenhamperis, and they were using the New Davidson form of arms, duly differentiated and developed from the earlier Old Davidson design which used the St Giles motif. Auchenhamperis today is open farming country located between Huntly and Turriff. The landscape is probably little changed from the early 16th century with its small population scattered amongst the farms. Auchenhamperis today The north-east Davidsons of the town of Aberdeen and those living near Donside and Huntly were traditionally said to be descended from Alderman Robert Davidson [killed at Battle of Harlaw in 1411]. By the 1500s a Thomas Davidson, believed to be a grandson of Alderman Robert Davidson, and his family, held lands at Auchenhamperis, near Huntly and then at Monymusk on its monastic estates. The lands near Monymusk came into Davidson hands when Thomas Davidson of Auchenhamperis was Procurator, or Factor or Land Agent, for the Prior of the church lands after 1500. The occupancy of these lands was mostly relinquished by about 1537 by a son of Thomas Davidson. Monymusk today is a lowland farming and forestry area with an old village centre surrounded by interesting historical buildings.

  • Monymusk Masterplan
SECTION 3 CONTEXT 1751 Townscape Proposals 1774 Map of Village and Fields 1901 Ordnance Survey Map 2005 Ordnance Survey Map Monymusk Draft Masterplan, Aberdeenshire 2006 - 2015 LOCATION & CONTEXT Monymusk Village is located to the east of Tillyfourie and to the west of Kemnay on the banks of the River Don, Aberdeenshire. It is nestled in the shadow of Cairn William and Pitfichie Hill. The village is identified as a rural service centre within the Rural Housing Market Area of Aberdeenshire District. It is also within the Area of Landscape Significance and therefore development in this area should respect this landscape designation. Monymusk The village is rural in character and the existing built form reflects its history as a “planned” village and its evolution over a number of years. Source: Ordnance Survey 17 Monymusk Draft Masterplan, Aberdeenshire 2006 - 2015 HISTORIC ANALYSIS 1730 – 1846 The sheltered and secluded site of Monymusk has been an area of settlement for many Centuries. Neolithic man left behind a legacy of stone circles such as those at Deer Park, Tombeg N and Whitehills. Before 1730 the village square was used to overnight cattle being taken along the old drove roads from Alford to Aberdeen and from central Scotland via the Cairn o’ Mount to Inverness. The Lint Mill and Lodge (Beech Lodge), built in 1749, later became a bobbin mill where bobbins and Jute were manufactured for export to Calcutta from Aberdeen up to 1859. Like many other places in the north east, Monymusk was important for it’s spinning and weaving industry. The 18 th Century landscape design of Monymusk was taken to an art form, as millions of trees were planted on the Estate by Sir Archibald to provide shelter, beauty and income.
