Bampton Bampton is a lively village that may seem oddly familiar to some first time visitors as it was used for filming the outdoor scenes in the popular TV drama ‘Downton Abbey’. The set locations for Downton Abbey have become stars in their own right.

Churchgate House is used as the Crawley family home and the old Grammar School Building which houses Bampton Community Archive, with its impressive collection of old photographs, served as the ‘Downton’ hospital. Church View has appeared regularly throughout the series as home to two fictional pubs and the site of Downton Fair. St Mary’s Church also featured prominently as St Michael and All Angels, where a number of dramatic ‘Downton’ events including a jilting at the altar occurred. Elsewhere in the village you will also find West Ox Arts Gallery, which has a rolling programme of exhibitions of various art forms and during the late May Bank Holiday you can also experience traditional Morris Dancing during the Bampton Day of Dance celebrations.

If you would like to continue a tour of Downton locations a leaflet is available: www.oxfordshirecotswolds.org/downtonguide

The 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses the , a delightful local museum illustrating the town's past. St John the Baptist Church is a real gem with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford's great families. Little changed over the centuries, Burford is popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its specialist independent shops and the wide variety of places to eat. There is free coach parking right in the centre of Burford, in Priory Lane, conveniently opposite the Visitor Information Centre, which is open seven days a week, and the public toilets.
