    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 1, 2010 INTERVIEWS: DEAN DEBNAM 888-621-6988 / 919-880-4888 (serious media inquiries only please, other questions can be directed to Tom Jensen) QUESTIONS ABOUT THE POLL: TOM JENSEN 919-744-6312 Branstad under 50% in primary Raleigh, N.C. – In the Iowa Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, Roxanne Conlin appears headed for a romp, while Terry Branstad is surprisingly under 50% in his bid for the Republican Gubernatorial nomination. Terry Branstad has just 46% to entrepreneur Bob Vander Plaats’ 31% and State Representative Rod Roberts’ 13%. His standing is less strong than expected given his previous 16 year tenure as Governor. Branstad gets 41-68% of the vote across the ideological spectrum, but does worst among the 74% conservative majority, edging Tea Party favorite Vander Plaats only 41-35. Branstad is very well liked, with a 59-20 favorability rating. Vander Plaats also grades well, at 47-19, with the least-known Roberts at 24-15. Former U.S. Attorney Roxanne Conlin, the establishment pick, pulls 48% in the race to challenge Senator Chuck Grassley in the fall. While 31% are undecided at this late stage, the two lesser-known candidates, former State Representiative Bob Krause and former State Senator Tom Fiegen, get only 13% and 8%, respectively. Conlin leads Krause by 30 points among the 38% liberal minority, and tops Fiegen by 50 points among the 46% moderate plurality, but trumps Krause only 24-22 among the 16% conservative minority. More than 70% of likely Democratic primary voters have no opinion of Krause or Fiegen, and of those who do, they are both in negative territory, Fiegen at 12-16 and Krause at 11-18.

Hillary Clinton leads 7 of her Republican opponents while trailing 4 of them, but in none of the cases are the margins larger than 4 points. The strongest Republican against Clinton in the state is Ben Carson, who leads her 44/40. The other three GOP hopefuls ahead of Clinton all lead her by just a single point- Mike Huckabee at 44/43, Scott Walker at 44/43, and Marco Rubio at 43/42. The Republicans who fare the worst against Clinton are Jeb Bush who trails by 4 at 44/40, and Rand Paul and Donald Trump who each trail by 3 at 43/40. The rest of the GOP hopefuls each trail Clinton by 2 points- Ted Cruz at 44/42, Carly Fiorina at 42/40, and Chris Christie and John Kasich each at 41/39. “Iowa is looking very much like a toss up in the Presidential race at this early stage,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “The numbers are more reminiscent of the photo finish in the state in 2004 than Barack Obama’s relatively comfortable wins in 2008 and 2012.” Chuck Grassley looks to be in pretty good shape for reelection next year- he leads his prospective Democratic opponents by anywhere from 22 to 24 points- it's 51/29 over Bob Krause, 53/30 over Tom Fiegen, and 52/28 over Rob Hogg.

Grassley has solid job approval numbers for this political environment, and while most have not heard of them, none of the Democrats is well liked. Grassley gets 57% of the vote to Conlin’s 31%, with a similar 57-27 margin among independents. He also pulls 25% of Conlin’s party and 88% of his own. Grassley tops Tom Fiegen, 56-28, and Bob Krause, 56-26. He gets 88 or 90% of the GOP and 23% of the Democrats in each of those matchups, beating Fiegen, 55-23, and Krause, 54-22, with independents. By a 46-37 margin, Iowa voters approve of Grassley’s job performance. Republicans more strongly approve, 68-17, than Democrats disapprove, 27-56, while independents also approve, 42-38. Conlin has a 19-29 favorability margin, while 53% have no opinion of her. 82% and 80% are unaware of Fiegen and Krause, respectively; of those who are aware, Fiegen has a 5-13 grade, and Krause a 6-14. Fiegen and Krause are even in negative territory with Democrats, each at 10% favorable, while Conlin sits at 38-15 with them.
