As Head Teacher, I hope that the partnership between home and school will be productive and enjoyable and that your child settles and enjoys his/her time with us. We take pride in the fact that this is a happy and industrious school with a real sense of team spirit and we value that the children’s education is shared with parents, who have a very important role to play. This handbook aims to explain how that partnership develops successfully through help, support and expectations. Old Rayne Primary is situated in the small, rural Aberdeenshire village of Old Rayne, eight miles North West of the town of Inverurie. The catchment area includes the village and surrounding hinterland. Old Rayne is within easy commuting distance of the city of Aberdeen. The school celebrated its centenary in 1980 and continues to be a focal point within the community. Within the village of Old Rayne there is a well utilised village hall, hairdressers, a large play park and a football field. In Pitmachie, adjoining the village is a car garage and a camping and caravanning site. Two miles out of the village is Kirkton of Rayne Church. Introduction to Old Rayne School | 5 Almost all primary one pupils starting at the school have had playgroup experience at Old Rayne Playgroup or they have accessed pre-school nursery at Rothienorman School. Old Rayne School provides primary education for children aged 5 – 12, we have three classes – Primary 2-1, Primary 5-3 and Primary 7-5. The building comprises three large classrooms; a small multi-purpose hall with adjoining servery; a nurture room; a staffroom and admin office/head teacher’s office. A tarmac playground surrounds the building with a school garden to one side. The local St Lawrence Hall is used for P.E. lessons and school concerts. In fine weather, the local authority park opposite the school is used as an additional play area when staff to pupil ratios permit. Devolved budgets are managed in accordance with authority guidelines in order to support planned improvements in the school. Relationships and partners The school also works closely with a range of other support agencies and volunteers in order to provide the best possible experience for children with additional support needs. Our Active Schools Coordinator provides a range of additional active and sporting activities for the children. Community links are a valued part of school life. The Head Teacher is invited to attend Community Association meetings as well as Village Hall Committee meetings. The school has a very supportive Parent Council. These groups support school improvement activities and raise additional funds to provide many extras for the pupils in the school. Old Rayne Primary regularly participates in activities with other local schools. These include, for example, joint school trips, technology challenges, sports matches as well as staff meetings. On leaving Old Rayne Primary at the end of primary seven, pupils transfer to Meldrum Academy in the town of Oldmeldrum. Meldrum Academy is a Community School and aims to provide a common and partnership approach to all families within its catchment area of twelve primary schools. Regular LEaRN - Local Education and Recreation Network - meetings are held with representatives from all the schools, Community Education, Library and other services. Every day we try to have fun, be respectful, be responsible and strive to achieve our very best.’ Our Values: The values which inform our vision for the school were chosen together through consultation with everyone involved in the school. These values underpin everything we do. Respect Self Confidence Enjoyment Communication Teamwork Achievement Our Aims: At Old Rayne School, we aim to provide children with the skills needed for learning, life and work. At all times we encourage involvement, engagement and contribution from all children and their families. We endeavour to teach pupils how to become healthy, independent individuals who understand the importance of caring for their environment and each other. Throughout their time in our school we set high expectations for all children to help and support them to set equally high expectations for themselves. We aim to offer children many opportunities to celebrate success and achievement in and out of school. At Old Rayne we believe it is important to promote children’s knowledge and respect for their community and recognise their place within it. Our aim is that over their time at our school, children will work together to develop themselves around the following four capacities: • To become responsible citizens • To be effective contributors • To be successful learners • To become confident individuals 8 |Curriculum Curriculum Within our school, we aim to provide a curriculum that is both inclusive and ambitious for all – a curriculum which is both academically challenging and also provides opportunities to develop skills for learning, life and work. Our curriculum will be based around the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence – to ensure our pupils are successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. Our curriculum will also reflect the principles of curriculum design to ensure breadth, depth, personalisation & choice, challenge & enjoyment, progression, coherence and relevance. We will, therefore have a curriculum which we will adapt continuously over time to meet the needs of our pupils. Following the principles of Curriculum for Excellence, achievement of children and young people is celebrated in its broadest sense. This means looking beyond formally assessed learning, to recognise activities like volunteering and participation in arts, sports and community-based programmes. This approach complements the nurturing and aspirational outcomes of Getting It Right for Every Child, and our aim in Aberdeenshire to overcome inequality by Raising Attainment for All, promoting Equity and Excellence in schools, and Closing the Gap. Further information on the schools approach to Curriculum for Excellence including information for parents, can be found on the school website at: oldrayne.aberdeenshire.sch.uk Curricular Areas • Literacy and English Language: Listening, Talking Reading and Writing.
