NINETEENTH-CENTURY GENDER STUDIES # ISSUE 4.1 (SPRING 2008) George Gissing's Manifesto: The Odd Women and The Unclassed By Lawton A. Brewer, Georgia State University <1>Jacob Korg, in George Gissing: A Critical Biography, contends that, although the economic circumstances of the Madden sisters, focal characters of The Odd Women, constitute severe challenges to their survival, “[…] Gissing perceives that the most desperate element of their plight is the loneliness and barrenness of lives in which an invitation to tea or a slice of roast beef are events of supreme importance” (188). The sisters long for activities appropriate to their claim to membership in the genteel middle class. Nonetheless, it is the Madden’s poverty that accounts for the social sterility Korg so correctly identifies. Their desire to eat competes with their desire for class inclusion. Consequently, although the book focuses on issues such as marriage, friendship, and kinship, these affiliations are brokered in an economic system in which everything has, quite literally, a price. George Gissing’s The Odd Women, a novel so often seen in terms of its feministic depiction of the “woman problem,”(1) reduces virtually every human relationship to the level of an economic transaction of some sort. Certainly, Gissing does not render every relationship in exclusively economic terms, nor does he stipulate that women or men are economic entities and nothing else. However, the deprived condition endured by the characters regulates many of the decisions, conversations, and commentary in the novel, resulting in discussions which often suggest, explicitly or implicitly, a business deal of some kind. -

Guerra literature that will appeal to at-risk and incarcerated On any given day, more than 100,000 youths are incarcerated in the United States (Snyder & Sickmund, 2006). Countless more are considered teens—and meet the “at-risk” for incarceration, based on factors such as homelessness, poverty, requirements for use in gang membership, substance abuse, grade retention, and more. Unfortunately, gender and race can be considered risk factors as well. correctional facilities and The most recent Department of Justice (DOJ) census showed that 85% of high schools? incarcerated teens are male (Snyder & Sickmund, 2006). Thirty-eight percent of the youths in the juvenile justice system are black, and 19% are Hispanic (Snyder & Sickmund, 2006). The DOJ predicted that the juvenile correctional population will increase by 36% by the year 2020, mostly because of growth in the Hispanic male population (Snyder & Sickmund, 2006). Research points to literacy as a major protective factor against incarceration for at-risk youths (Christle & Yell, 2008), while reading difficulty has been documented as one of the leading risk factors for delinquency (Brunner, 1993; Drakeford, 2002; Leone, Krezmien, Mason, & Meisel, 2005; Malmgren & Leone, 2000). For teens already in custody, literacy skills are strongly correlated with a lower chance of recidivism (Leone et al., 2005). In fact, reading instruction has been more effective than shock incarceration or boot camps at reducing recidivism (Center on Crime, Communities, and Culture, 1997). -

The different stylistic iterations of the post Second World War novel offered by these writers, from Khatibi’s experimental autobiography to Izzo’s noir fiction, provide the basis of an analysis of the connections between literary representation and the changing urban environments of Casablanca, Montreal, and Marseille. Relying on planning documents, historical analyses, and urban theory, as well as architectural, political, and literary discourse, to understand the fabric of the cities that surround novels’ representations, the dissertation argues that the perceptual descriptions that enrich these narratives of urban life help to characterize new ways of seeing and knowing the complex spaces of each of the cities. -
George Gissing's Narrative and Late Nineteenth-Century Literary Trends
GEORGE GISSING'S NARRATIVE AND LATE NINETEENTH-CENTURY LITERARY TRENDS. It is often difficult and unconvincing to identify a writer's work with a particular literary movement. George Gissing is no exception to this. The following pages will indicate the similarities between his work and the main literary trends of the late nineteenth century, without, however, attempting to label it. In order to do this it will be useful to have a brief look at those trends —namely, Aestheticism, the continuation of The Great Tradition and English Naturalism'—. In this, the aim of these notes is not to break new ground but deal only with some aspects of the subject already well-known to literary criticism. Critics have often associated Aestheticism with Pre-Raphaelite tastes, while stressing the differences between them. For them, Pre-Raphaelism was a movement with clearly artistic aims, while the term Aestheticism referred not so much to a movement as to a group of writers who shared similar aesthetic ideals'. Walter Pater, for instance, in his Essay on Style, proposed the search for the exact term, in order to create beauty rather than to achieve greater clarity in the message. That is, he sought to reduce language to its purely poetic' function. And Oscar Wilde, as the extreme defender of the concept of art for art's sake', was absolutely opposed to the idea that language should be used only to further social or political causes3. With the death of George Eliot, in 1880, and of Trollope, in 1882, it seemed as if the era of the great Victorian novel had begun to enter a decline. -

The Power of Doubt Hou Hanru Art is an imaginative, but equally realistic, way to approach and question the world. Creating an artwork, while mobilising all our faculties of imagination is, to a great extent, a process of creatively and critically demonstrating how we perceive reality by means of ‘representation’ in images, texts and other media. It inevitably involves doubts, questioning, investiga- tion and interrogation regarding the real world, which, in turn, is permanently changing. By definition, an artwork in general results from doubting the real—not only the appearance of reality but also, more importantly, the substance of its exist- ence, or, the truth. This is a process full of contradictions, an infinite adventure into the realm of the impossible since truth is by no mean unique and certain. Instead, it’s always unstable, uncertain and multiple. The invention of photography also implies a contradiction: it was devised to be the most immediate and loyal reflection of the real world, hence its reality, or truth. At the same time, however, it immediately raises the question of the reliability of the real-ness of the images that it reproduces, due to the variable factors involved in the process, the material and technical limits of the equipment, the environmental condi- tions, and so on. Hence, photography shows the reality of the world in images that are shockingly different from our retinal perception, while the intervention of the subjective approach of the photographer can radically complicate and alter the ‘representative’ nature of the image. The representational function of photography thus becomes an eternal problem. -

Edwin Reardon, writer and self-declared part of a class of “casual wage-earners,” sells books and furniture to second-hand dealers to supplement his earnings.1 Major and minor characters often feel the pang of hunger: Reardon spends time in “semi-starvation,” Biffen is described as a man of “excessive meagreness [that] would all but have qualified him to enter an exhibition in the capacity of living skeleton,” a “hunger-bitten clerk” is seen scribbling job applications, and an unemployed surgeon, Victor, begs for coffee and food at Camden Town Railway Station.2 Much attention has been paid to how New Grub Street represents the failures and successes of late-Victorian -

Abstract Rethinking Urban Space in Contemporary British Writing argues that the prose literature of its featured authors offers a unique forum through which to perceive and account for the multifarious agency of urban space. Chapter one examines the limitations of using the Marxist spatial theory of Henri Lefebvre, widely adopted by literary scholars, to account for the widespread appearance of abandoned, subterranean and transient spaces in contemporary British writing. The thesis then develops new ways of reading which, unlike Lefebvrean theory, allow such spaces to emerge as affective and narrative agents, shaping narrative form and action. Chapter two focuses upon reading abandoned spaces in the work of Iain Sinclair and Cheshire-born author Nicholas Royle; chapter three examines the agency of the subterranean city-space in narratives by Neil Gaiman, Tobias Hill and Conrad Williams; and chapter four interrogates the agency exerted by the hotel space in contemporary hotel novels by Ali Smith and Monica Ali. -
