Oallen Ford Bridge Update

Work on new Oallen Ford Bridge begins

Work on the construction of the new $3million Oallen Ford Bridge has begun in earnest with a July completion date forecast, subject to weather and river conditions. Goulburn Mulwaree Operations Director Matt O’Rourke said the new bridge would be 5.36m above the Shoalhaven River and 120m in length. It would allow passage up to a one in 20 year flood. At the moment, the clearing of vegetation on the Goulburn side of the Shoalhaven River from the road approach down the river is occurring make way for large earthworks.

“We are currently clearing vegetation, which will allow Council’s subcontractor to get in with the heavy plant in to carry out the excavations required at the site,” Mr O’Rourke said.

Mr O’Rourke said between now and mid-February, the bulk of the earthworks would be carried out, with the concrete bridge works to begin by the end of February.

“Once the bridge has been constructed, Council staff will complete the road works by integrating the new approaches into the existing road. We expect to have bridge approaches completed by the end of June, subject to weather and river conditions.”

He said after the construction, the old timber bridge would be dismantled. Once this is completed, re-vegetation of the site would begin.

“One of the key aspects of the bridge’s longevity is to put erosion control in place as the river will be subject to periodic flooding,” he said. “All going well, Council hopes to have the bridge in operation by early July.”

Mr O’Rourke said there would not be any disruption to traffic during the initial phase, however the existing road would need to be closed for a short period of time to allow integration of the bridge approaches into the existing road.

“This will require the existing road to be closed for a short period,” he said. “The community will be advised of these closures well in advance through Council notices, the Community Newsletter and in traditional and social media.”

He said the total cost of the new bridge would be around $3million and that the project was largely funded by the Roads and Maritime Services. Council will fund the bridge approaches.

Report from Windellama Progress Association Windellama Progress had its first meeting of the year on the 16th February. A number of items were on the Agenda and discussion was lively and many different points of view were put forward. We decided to carry a couple of items over to our next meeting so everyone can be fully informed. A big thanks to Francis Knights for chasing up some outstanding accounts from the Field Day . Windellama Hall was lucky to be the host site for the recently held Windellama Art & Craft Show which would have made the Hall look pretty good. Next month the hall hosts the Country Music Talent Quest from the 6th -8th, and the Monthly Markets are on the 15th. Don’t forget the Fire Brigade Auction I April and later in the year we are providing a lunch for a tour car club. Our next Committee Meeting is the 3rd Monday of the Month (16th) at the Hall at 2pm. Feel free to drop in give us some ideas and have a cuppa. Any questions please contact our Secretary Christine Woodcock , after she finishes her cruising on the high seas !!!! Windellama SES First Aid & CFR

Windellama unit played host to Goulburn and Bungendore units at my property, where they carried out a Chainsaw operators course.

There were about 20 people in attendance, these courses are recognized Statewide and offer opportunities for them to gain employment, as has happened in the past. We now have 20 members at the Windellama Unit, which is looking much better, young blood being included in some of the new members, very encouraging.

May I please advise residents that it is not practical to give lot numbers for their address when calling for assistance, whatever form it may take, as they are of no use and create much lost time money and recourses. If you do not have a road side allocated number as issued by the relevant council, ask for one.

We as CFR members in particular, find ourselves being called to many varied and interesting jobs. Come on, join up and see for yourselves. The next course, so I am told is in late September early October. Deputy Local Unit Controller Kevin Muffet

TARAGO WORM FARM VISIT Our next activity will be a visit to Cid Riley's Globalworming worm farm at Tarago on March 28. This promises to be a great experience for Landcarers and Garden Club members. Cid will conduct the tour and will demonstrate the advantages of keeping some composting worms on a small scale for the home gardener and on a larger scale for the primary producer.

Watching Cid's worms convert any old organic rubbish into highly fertile worm casts is a sight to behold.

Location: 26 Goulburn Rd Tarago. Heading out of Tarago to Bungendore no 26 is on the right 300m after the railway level crossing on the corner of Goulburn and Covan Roads. Meet at 9.30am for morning tea.

The tour will start at 10am. See you there.

Windellama Garden Club Hi! Everyone, Well the Country Fair is over for another year and what a busy time we all had: · setting up the hall; · taking the entries; · making sure everything was perfect; and · then the clean up. There are some very clever people out there producing all manner of handicrafts and arrangements, and what beautiful flowers! I’m envious. The raffle winners were: 1. Hamper: B. Bowes; 2. Wok: C. Poulter,; 3. BBQ Utensils: K. Roach; 4. Statue: R. Woods; and 5. Tapestry: I. O’Donnell. In the near future we will be giving lessons on flower arrangement so stay tuned for dates and times in the next newsletter. Our next meeting is on the Tuesday 10th March 3564 Oallen Ford Rd. We will be discussing the Country Fair and how next year we might be able to improve things. If you have any feedback on how to improve next year’s Country Fair, or would like to come along and discuss things, please feel free. My phone number is 4844 5128. Happy Gardening Ros Woods

Television Reception in Bungonia

Some residents of Bungonia have experienced poor or no TV reception since the recent re -stack transmission frequencies for ABC, SBS and other commercial channels. It seems that the Federal Government has sold off TV frequencies to telephone companies.

These changes mean that an expensive satellite dish & decoder would need to be installed on each home to maintain the TV signal.

Ros & Ian Beveridge have spoken to the local MP about this issue and would like to hear from any other residents who are experiencing poor or changed TV reception. Please contact Ros or Ian on 02 48 444 444 for more information.

March In Your Garden By Irene Turner

This month with hopefully warm days and cool nights our Autumn toned trees and shrubs will start to change Into their red and orange colours.

VEGETABLES Plant out cauliflower, cabbages, brussel sprouts and broccoli seedling now, and feed them with liquid fertilizer to get these plants established for winter harvesting. If planting these plants cover with netting or old curtains to keep the cabbage moth off them.

Lettuce, turnips, radish and white onions seed or seedling can also go in now.

FLOWERS Seedling to be planted now- alyssum, pansy, viola, stocks, poppies, calendula, carnations, dianthus, polyanthus, larkspur, snapdragon, static, verbena. Seedling of- wallflower, sweet Williams (tall) and dwarf. Seeds of Virginian stock sow directly into the garden. Perennial plants should be in nurseries this month. These include hollyhock, Canterbury bells, aquilegia (columbines), delphinium and pentstemons. If you have pentstemons in your garden this is a good time to divide the old plants and trim and take cutting.

You can fertilizer your lawns with complete lawn fertilizer now and water it in well. Propagate cutting of geranium, fuschia and hydrangeas. Good mixture is 1 part coarse sand to 2 parts of peatmoss.

Watch for insects such as aphids and caterpillars on roses. Hose off or spray with rose spray. With all the wet weather we have had roses could have black spot and powdery mildew. Remove and throw out any foliage that is badly infected to reduce further spread.

Make a safe-to-use spray. In a spray bottle, add 1 tablespoon of horticultural oil, add 1 heaped teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to 2l of water. Shake it well and spray to saturate the whole plant, including the undersurface of leaves. Repeat the spray in the morning, once per week or after rain.

Fertilize your roses every 4-6 weeks. Water deeply and maintain mulch cover throughout the season to help keep your roses in top shape.

Notes on Garden Club Meeting 3rd February 2015 We had an interesting and informative meeting this month. We visited Bruce and Doreen Herrett’s property near Goulburn. Bruce had kindly invited Peter and Robyn Simpson— both agronomists, to give us a talk about soils and how to improve them. Everyone appreciated the knowledge which both imparted to us all—in clear and simple terms. They were both so friendly and forthcoming—no-one felt embarrassed to ask questions. The notes which they provided were very clear and helpful and we should all improve our gardens! They thoroughly recommended the Manutee Soil pH Test Kit which is easy to use. Robyn said that she had good results creating micro-climates in her garden by experimenting with different shrubs and trees especially for windbreaks .

Both Peter and Robyn stressed the importance of building up our soils with organic matter (compost, mulch and lawn clippings) which will progressively improve the soil structure. After the very encouraging talks, we fortified ourselves with lunch and then ventured out to explore the garden. Bruce and Doreen have a wonderful collection of trees on their property and Bruce has mad a ship’s bow in the garden for their grandchildren to play in.

Liz-Ann has kindly offered to make up name tags for us all to wear—this will help newcomers and guests to identify us. We thoroughly enjoyed our guests Robyn and Peter Simpson and hope they will visit us again.

Our next meeting will be at Jackie and Doug Gurney’s place on Tuesday 3rd March at 10 am. (Remember Easter Bonnets!) “THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE WAS 50 YEARS AGO; THE NEXT BEST TIME IS TODAY”

What’s happening in Nerriga NPSA will hold their next General Meeting on Saturday, March 14, at 3.30pm at the Hall. All are welcome.

NPSA's next Cake Stall on Easter Saturday, April 4. We hope to see you there.

By early December the problem of swarming from your hives should be in the past , and if the season is a good one , nectar will be streaming in to the hive and being converted to sweet , golden honey by the industrious occupants .

If your hive is a single box , now is the time to add another and allow the bees to fill it with honey Don't be too eager to harvest this honey , as it is your bee's food supply for the coming autumn and winter months . Instead , add another super ( honey box ) to the hive , and allow the bees to fill it before taking any honey for yourself . A beehive needs about 25 kilos of stored honey to survive winter on the Southern Tablelands , so keep this in mind as the summer progresses and be prepared to feed them to ensure they have sufficient for the winter.

It is very important to carry out disease and pest inspections at least every few months in the warmer seasons . Be on the lookout for such diseases as American or European brood disease , Chalkbrood and Nosema , along with many others from which bees suffer. Information on these diseases and their treatment can be found on the NSW DPI website , or in any of the published texts on beekeeping.

By far the major pest effecting bees in Eastern Australia at the moment is an insect called the Small Hive Beetle . Originating in Southern Africa it is believed to have entered Australia in a shipment of equipment from the USA , for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and was first detected in beehives in the area around the Richmond RAAF Base in about 2003 . It lays it's eggs in the hive , and the larvae proceed to eat their way through honey , pollen , wax and bee larvae , leaving behind a trail of faeces containing an enzyme which causes the honey to ferment , and reduces the hive contents to a gooey stinking mess , which in desperation to escape , the bees will abscond from the hive and seek another home.

Keeping bees in the Windellama area can be a very rewarding past-time , though with the unreliability of our native eucalypts it is mostly a case of feast or famine , and hope that the ever reliable weeds we spend so much time and effort trying to eradicate will provide enough nectar and pollen to keep our bees happy and well for another year.

I’m Josie, I don’t like bees.

Citizen of the Year

Windellama local, Graham Kinder; named “Citizen of the Year” in the 2015 Australia Day Council Awards. Graham is known to many people around Windellama. As a member of the Windellama Progress Association and Windellama Landcare since its early days, he is President and a Deputy Captain of the Windellama Rural Fire Brigade and Church Warden at St Bartholomew’s Windellama and is seen working at many Community events in the area. Few people however (apart from his amazingly supportive wife, Vickie), are aware of just how much he has done and continues to do for our Community. Apart from his visible support of the Windellama Public School, and of the work done by people like Bonita Armstrong with Can Assist etc., you may not be aware that Graham is also a volunteer with the SES CFR and also the Salvation Army Emergency Services Unit. So, during the tragic Blue Mountains Fires, Graham was up there on the fire line one week and then a change of Uniform to help families in the Springwood Disaster Recovery Centre, after the fires. He is also a member of the NSW Emergency Services Aviation Operations Team. “We need to commit the time to train and put in the effort to help others, if we want them to help us when trouble threatens our area”, says Graham. “Aviation for example, has become a major resource to help save lives and protect property but it is Volunteers who train and then staff the Airbases during Fires and Floods (it is only because we now have trained volunteers in the Goulburn Mulwaree Shire that we can get Fire-Fighting aircraft based at Goulburn airport during the fire season!!). It’s also volunteers who get into the local Fire-Trucks and the Floodboats. It is Volunteers who provide the Community with Storm Teams and Community First Responder (pre ambulance) care”. The statistics are starting to suggest that natural disasters are becoming more frequent and much more severe. “If no-one volunteers, or puts in the effort to train and build their skills, we will end up with an alarming lack of capability and diminished ability to cope with these types of disasters”. As a highly skilled trainer and manager, Graham was asked by the RFS in Sydney, to become a volunteer facilitator of the NSW Multi-Agency Leadership Programme (MALP). He regularly gives up his time to fly all around the State to train senior managers and executives of the NSW Ambulance, Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Service and the SES. The Minister for Police and Emergency Services and the Commissioners recognise that we absolutely have to remove the old barriers and work much more effectively together. Programmes like MALP are recognised as making significant inroads into changing the old ways of thinking and developing strong, dynamic, professional leaders for the future. This is also helping put Windellama ‘on the map’ and that helps getting our area recognised when it comes to winning community grants and funding. You probably didn’t know that Graham’s business was devastated in the Global Financial Crisis. Despite all the difficulties, he hasn’t given up. He has consistently honoured his commitments to Windellama. He often drives from Sydney, straight to Brigade Training and the Brigade General (continued page 27)

You probably didn’t know that Graham’s business was devastated in the Global Financial Crisis. Despite all the difficulties, he hasn’t given up. He has consistently honoured his Page 26 commitmentswww.windellama.com.au to Windellama News - March 2015 Windellama. He often drives from Sydney,

(continued from page 23) Meeting, back to Sydney for contract work and back to Windellama for SES training, then back to Sydney to work again –all to support our Community. “Folk can’t just stand back and wait for someone else to do all the work. You need to be a part of it. You need to take the initiative and actually do something to help build the type of Community we want for ourselves and our families”. Last year, the NSW State Emergency Services Commissioner recognised his commitment and his level of training. Graham was appointed as Unit Controller for newly established Windellama SES Unit, to help build on the tremendous work of Kevin Muffet and the original CFR team. This appointment follows Graham’s years of service as a volunteer Training Officer for Goulburn SES. He remains as Deputy Local Controller of the SES at Manly in Sydney. “Yes, it’s true”, replied Graham, when asked if he is actively looking for new people to put up their hand and volunteer to help the Windellama Community. “But it’s not just about joining the new SES Unit here at Windellama or joining us at the Rural Fire Service. There are lots of ways people can make a real difference! Why not come to a Progress Association Meeting (2.30 pm 3rd Monday of every month at Windellama Hall). You can help out with the Windellama News or in the kitchen on Market Days or help on Brigade Auction Day or at the Field Day. Help mow down the oval or up at the Church (Services 11.30 am 4th Sunday of each Month). Why not join one of the great Garden Clubs in our area or support the Windellama Historical Society or Can Assist or the Windellama School (Fundraiser Auction and Fireworks on 6th June 2015), or come to a Landcare working bee.”

It’s not hard to see why the newspaper headlines called him “Mr Community”. “I was both honoured and humbled to receive the award. I was happy about the initial nomination. I hoped it might give me an opportunity to tell people about Windellama. I hoped we could encourage more people to support all our volunteer Community organisations. I never expected to win the Award. That’s a bit embarrassing, but it is truly appreciated” Graham said. The challenge now is to stay focussed on the real issues facing Windellama. Many communities degenerate into petty squabbles and backstabbing. Let’s remain better than that! Windellama has a proud track record, thanks to the efforts of a few truly dedicated people. We have continually upgraded the Hall, led the State in local weather technology, built fire sheds and an SES shed, maintained the Church heritage site, the Museum etc. etc. Just imagine what we can achieve if more people get involved!! Let’s keep working together to support our schools and local charities. Let’s continue building and maintaining our community infrastructure and growing resilience in times of fire, flood and storm. For contact details about joining the SES, RFS or most of the other local organisations mentioned in this article, please see the inside back cover of this edition of the Windellama News.
