A note from the Associate Director Caroline Byrne I first began working with the director, Christopher Haydon, in July 2013. Having worked with Christopher before, he invited me to come on board to work as his associate for this production. Christopher knew I loved formally exciting work, and beautifully crafted language. When I read the play I knew I had to work on it. I was really curious about its appearance on the page – it looked like a poem, so I was really excited about working on it like an epic of sorts. A contemporary epic. During rehearsals I listened to the play. I found linguistic links and ensured that the accuracy of the text was honoured and mined by the exceptional Lucy Ellison. It was always our aim to keep a tight rein on the text and enjoy the carefully crafted and seamless and sublime intelligence that weaves its way throughout the piece. Lucy and Christopher knew so much about drone warfare and weaponised drones, that I was in a very unusual position as an associate director in that they had so much research done before we got into rehearsals. I therefore concentrated on text, character and supporting Lucy’s and Chris’s work. When George Brant came into rehearsals to join us I began to understand his process too. I had once learned that Samuel Beckett was interested in the shape of ideas, in the composition of the text. George is like this too. We spoke many times about how a section might change if one word was changed – like a stack of cards – the domino effect really, on the meaning of the text. During tech I would often sit with George and say some bits of text for him to hear and consider for changes here and there…as all around us the designers were making their own brilliant contributions. So sitting in the dark with George was an insight into his process and his meticulous exactitude. That’s why this play is so engaging – everything is thought through, the words are scared and taut, the ideas have a home on a macro and micro level throughout the text. And then we opened. We all knew. We all knew this play was amazing. That in this room above the pub theatre was necessary. In Trying It On, David imagines what younger self might think of his generation’s actions since 1968, the annus mirabilis of the revolutionary left and the year he turned 20. Exploring the socialist movement, youth, ageing, revolution and reaction, it has been developed through interviews conducted by the playwright with activists past and present. Performed by David himself (for the first time in his career!), it is a solo show with a twist, framed through personal experience and drawing on autobiographical material. Trailer: https://vimeo.com/294765528 “The playwright’s imagined confrontation with the political activist he was 50 years ago is a triumph of confessional courage – and relentless optimism.
