The Gathering

We stand as the procession enters. The cantor sings:

Woodlands

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord; unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name; make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age the same; his holy name, the Lord, the Mighty One.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might; powers and dominions lay their glory by; proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word; firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children's children and for evermore!

The Confession and Absolution

Bishop Jesus said, ‘Before you offer your gift, go and be reconciled.’ As sisters and brothers in God’s family, we come together to ask our Father for forgiveness. Matthew 5.24 We kneel or sit and keep silence.

All Father, we have sinned against heaven and against you. We are not worthy to be called your children. We turn to you again. Have mercy on us, bring us back to yourself as those who once were dead but now have life through Christ our Lord. Amen. Luke 15 Bishop May the Father of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

The Collect

Bishop Let us pray that we may know and share the light of Christ.

The Liturgy of the Word

The Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 29. 1 – 14

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. This was after King Jeconiah, and the queen mother, the court officials, the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the artisans, and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem. The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom King Zedekiah of Judah sent to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. It said: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let the prophets and the diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream, for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, says the Lord. For thus says the Lord: Only when Babylon’s seventy years are completed will I visit you, and I will fulfil to you my promise and bring you back to this place. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me, says the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile. Reader Let us wait upon the Lord; All in whose word is our hope.

We stand as the cantor sings:

Wiltshire

Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ.

5

O magnify the Lord with me, with me exalt his name; when in distress to him I called, he to my rescue came.

The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just; deliverance he affords to all who on his succour trust.

O make but trial of his love: experience will decide how blest are they, and only they, who in his truth confide.

Fear him, ye saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; make you his service your delight, your wants shall be his care.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom we adore, be glory, as it was, is now, and shall be evermore. Nahum Tate, 1652-1715 and Nicholas Brady, 1659-1726

The New Testament Reading: Matthew 22. 34 - 40

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew. When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’ Reader Let us wait upon the Lord; All in whose word is our hope.

We keep silence together.

The Sermon The Revd Hilda Issacson 6

We stand as the cantor sings:

Here I am, Lord

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord…

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord…

Mary Sumner’s Personal Prayer

MU President We join together in the words of Mary Sumner’s personal prayer:

The Diocesan Vision Prayer

Chaplain Let us pray:

All Living God, Jesus calls his followers to seek first your Kingdom. Renew us as we make your love known; Release us to share freely in mission; and Rejuvenate us to be fruitful in your service. Give us courage, wisdom and compassion, that strengthened with the grace of the Holy Spirit, we may, as the Diocese of Sheffield, both flourish and grow, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Chaplain Rejoicing in God’s new creation, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

We stand.

The Act of Recommitment

Chaplain We commit ourselves anew to the work of God.

All Heavenly Father, as members of the Mothers' Union in this Diocese of Sheffield, we commit our lives to you. We seek your blessing in all we do; your presence in our fellowship; your inspiration in our activities; your strength in our service to the Church and to our communities, and to the world; help us to be faithful in prayer and worship and outgoing in our witness to the gospel, that we may advance your kingdom, and glorify your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Bishop Eternal Giver of love and power, your Son, Jesus Christ, has sent us into all the world to preach the gospel of his kingdom. Confirm us in this mission, and help us to live the good news we proclaim; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

We stand as the cantor sings: Maccabaeus Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son; endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son: Endless is the victory, thou o'er death hast won.

Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom. Let the church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing; for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting. Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son: Endless is the victory, thou o'er death hast won.

12

No more we doubt thee, glorious prince of life; life is nought without thee; aid us in our strife; make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love: bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above. Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son: Endless is the victory, thou o'er death hast won.

Edmund L Budry, 1854-1932 Translated: Richard B Hoyle, 1875-1939
