Riley, BA (Hons) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia, School of Humanities, Discipline of History, 2007. ABSTRACT The Good Old Way Revisited: The Ferrar Family of Little Gidding c.1625-1637 The Ferrars are remembered as exemplars of Anglican piety. The London merchant family quit the city in 1625 and moved to the isolated manor of Little Gidding in Huntingdonshire. There they pursued a life of corporate devotion, supervised by the head of the household, Nicholas Ferrar, until he died in December 1637. To date, the life of the pious deacon Nicholas Ferrar has been the focus of histories of Little Gidding, which are conventionally hagiographical and give little consideration to the experiences of other members of the family, not least the many women in the household. Further, customary representations of the Ferrars have tended to remove them from their seventeenth-century context. Countering the biographical trend that has obscured many details of their communal life, this thesis provides a new, critical reading of the family’s years at Little Gidding while Nicholas Ferrar was alive. It examines the Ferrars in terms of their own time, as far as possible using contemporary documents instead of later accounts and confessional mythology. It shows that, while certain aspects of life at Little Gidding were unusual, on the whole the family was less exceptional than traditional histories have implied; certainly the family was not so unified and unworldly as the idealised images have suggested.

FRIENDS OF Since my earliest memories, I have been reminded of my father’s school motto: ‘Manners maketh man’ – at the heart of being a ‘gentleman’. In a nation which LITTLE GIDDING has taken pride in this, it is a bit illogical I think, that in an attempt to help us NEWSLETTER identify more easily with him, some preachers have wanted to emphasise that he is not: gentle Jesus meek and mild. I understand why. May 2009 ‘Gentleness is a quality hard to fi nd in a society which admires toughness and roughness. We are encouraged to get things done fast, even when people get SPRING AND SUMMER AT LITTLE GIDDING hurt in the process. Success, accomplishment and productivity count. Gentle is the one who is attentive to the strengths and weaknesses of the other and enjoys being together more than accomplishing something. A gentle person treads carefully, looks tenderly and touches with reverence. A gentle person knows that true growth requires nurture, not force.’ (Henri Nouwen, Bread for the Journey, 6 February) Would it not be very good if English Christians could again be known for their gentleness? It is part of the risky way of relating in the way of Jesus. St Paul knew gentleness to be a primary characteristic of the Master (2 Corinthians 10.1). Easily hurt, humans cannot be vulnerable with one whose hands are not gentle. It may well be preferable to bottle up pain and guilt unless words of forgiveness are heard spoken with gentleness.

Matters arising from the minutes: a) Alconbury Weald – The Clerk had attended the last meeting held on 4th June. General - Negotiations are ongoing regarding the southern access on to the A141. Urban & Civic have not received any complaints regarding noise from the demolition works. Alconbury Airfield has been declared surplus by USAF but not by the MOD yet. However, The Stukeleys Parish Council have sent an open letter of complaint, protesting that the Parish Councils were not included in preliminary talks held by HDC. Enterprise Zone – Groundworks have started for the Club Building. Funds have been released so that a start can be made on designing the Vocational Training Centre. Planning applications for the speculative buildings will be with HDC in August/September. Residential – The first phase of 128 homes will be a joint venture between Urban & Civic and Hopkins Homes. Building will start October/November with the first occupation next summer. There will be no affordable housing in this first phase.

Huntingdon and St Ives - West) AMSL – m (Mapping) Figure 0.1: Montage of pre-Season 3 images Aims and Objectives Investigate the pit revealed in the south end of Trench #1 in order to: - determine its form and use(s) - excavate the fill of the pit for 100 percent environmental sampling in order to further understand the pit's use(s) Investigate the possible wall and post-hole in close proximity to the pit in order to determine whether they are indeed structural and to further determine whether the post-hole respects a supporting post or a door post. Investigate the marked differences immediately south of the pit and possible structural features; marked differences include soil type, colour and texture, and the absence of CBM, tesserae and other archaeological artefacts. Conduct geophysical earth resistance survey. Project: Romano-British Settlement on Hill Top Season: 03 This session of excavation and geophysical survey proved to be another successful set of investigations that, despite the weather and ground conditions, addressed all the aims and objectives set above. The true extent of the pit was revealed and the half section showed it to be a 'beehive' or 'bell' shaped pit; a style of in-ground storage pit in common use from the Late Iron Age through the second century Romano-British - as evinced by finds from the pit fill.

    The Buckworth Experience 1 2 FOREWORD We have called this book The Buckworth Experience as we have recorded the changing aspects of village life over the past 100 years not just from records but through experiences of past and present residents. The phrase was first coined in the 1980s by the then Bishop of Ely to describe his visit to the parish. He enjoyed the warmth of his welcome, and although it was early spring, he was able to appreciate Buckworth’s unique panoramic views. The church went on to use this catchphrase on many occasions and it appeared on T-shirts and sweatshirts, sold in aid of the church restoration. There have been many changes but what stays constant is the ‘spirit’ of Buckworth and its people. We hope this continues in the twenty-first century as it did in the twentieth and that villagers at the end of this new century, looking back as we have over the past 100 years, will appreciate and recognise the ‘Buckworth experience’. Over the past 18 months, we have contacted and spoken to many people, searched county records and newspaper archives and spent many hours battling with new technology. We would like to thank all those who contributed to this book. We recognise that there are some omissions as not all the detail we wanted was accessible, but we hope we have put together an interesting and informative book.
