Broncos Head Coach Mike Shanahan (On running the ball against the Patriots) Limiting the rushing yards was pretty impressive because they were very impressive the first couple of games running the ball and it was a great challenge for our defense.

(On the game) Offensively we made a few third downs that kept a couple of drives going, and it was a dog fight the whole game and I feel very fortunate to come out with a win.

(On Jake Plummer’s performance) I think Jake really managed the game well, with a defense like this they really keep you off balance they do so many different things to you, so many different rushers, so many different defenses. They can confuse a quarterback quickly and make him make mistakes. He made a couple of big plays and a couple of big throws at opportune times.

(On what they did on Defense) We knew we had to stop the running game because they played so well the first couple of games running the football and they have so many different weapons and they play opportunistically so we knew we had to step up in that area, so we felt that if we could do that then we could just react to the pass and we didn’t blitz like we did the last time, but fortunately we made some plays at opportune times.

(On the 32-yard touchdown pass from Plummer to Walker) We were thinking that if we did not make it we would go for it on fourth down, so we thought they would be in a man on man defense and just go for the long bomb and get a chance for Javon Walker to be one-on-one and fortunately they were in there pretty tight to stop the run and Javon made a nice catch and Jake made a nice throw.

Champ Bailey, Cornerback (On the play of the defense) As long as we are keeping people out of the end zone, we’ll be fine. I hated it (New England scoring). I wanted the goose egg. We have always had a Super Bowl caliber defense. It is all about executing and playing together and trusting each other.

(On winning in New England) You know how tough it is to win on the road against anybody, but to beat a team this good on the road is big for us. Going into the bye week we have a lot of work to do but we are going in the right direction. You never want to go in a bye week with a loss.

(On ) He looked good, they just didn’t make enough plays. They normally make a lot of big plays that enable them to win. The receiving corps is different but at the same time you still have Tom Brady back there. We just play good against them, I don’t know what it is, people look too far into it. It is two good teams playing and we have come out on top recently.

Tatum Bell, Running Back (On getting the bulk of the playing time) They (the coaches) told me early in the week but I had to keep it away from you guys (the press). I think I earned it, I’ve paid my dues. I feel good. When I have had a good series I don’t have to worry about coming out and sitting out the next series. I want to keep pushing. I sat myself out once on my own, they came and got me once because I was cramping. I just want to prove to my coaches and teammates that I can carry the load. I’m glad the coaches trust me.

(On the running game) We wanted to come out early and set the tempo. We have trouble against 3-4 teams. I think we put on a good show today.

Gerard Warren, Defensive Tackle (On coming into Gillette and dominating the game) We just stayed on our game plan. We didn’t have to go outside our game plan to see what they were doing. We just kept it pretty simple and went out and played what we call old school gridiron football with the Patriots.

(On giving up the touchdown) We wanted to keep them out of the red zone and the end zone. But every now and again you might have a breakdown and those are the things you make sure don’t cost you the game.

John Lynch, Safety (On the win) The coaches set out a tremendous game plan. I don’t know if there has ever been a night before the game when the coach said this is what we need to do to win and we went out and did it.

Domonique Foxworth, Cornerback (On stopping the run) We are always a tough team to run against and we had a couple of mental errors last week and gave up more yards than what we are used to. It is nothing new, we never let anyone run too well. We are a responsible team and play in our gaps well.

(On the Denver offense) Coach Shanahan has been doing this a long time, Jake (Plummer) is not a young guy, and Javon (Walker) is a playmaker. It was only a matter of time before we got on track. We needed to hold our opponents long enough for the offense to step up and they did tonight. Any time you beat the Patriots in Foxboro you deserve a lot of respect.

Ian Gold, Linebacker (On the Denver defense) It all started up front with the defensive line and they had the heart to hang in there, and make it all possible. Without those guys up front we wouldn’t be able to fly around out there like we did.

(On planning for Tom Brady) We just go out and do our job. You will have to ask Brady (Tom) what it is every time he plays us, I am sure it is just the execution we bring out there on the field. I really couldn’t tell you without giving up our game plan. We go out there and execute our defense. Regardless of what the plan is, we just get the job done and that’s what we pride ourselves on.

Stephen Alexander, Tight End (On the defense) They are just shutting people down. That’s unbelievable; I hope that they continue to play the way they are playing, because if they do it is going a very special year for us.

Javon Walker, WR (On 2nd Touchdown) You know what, there were plays previous to that one seeing how they were playing and sometimes it just comes down to making a play. It was a tough game and the coach called it and we took a shot. We’ve always said just try and make a play.

(On the game) A lot of our playmakers stepped up today, from Rod (Smith) moving the sticks, (David) Kircus and Brandon Marshall. When its games like this, we want to put it in our hands as well as our running backs.

(On play of Jake Plummer) I’m most proud of him. The quarterback takes the heat for a lot of the stuff that goes right and a lot of stuff that goes wrong. He stuck in there and kept his head up. I’ve told him and so has Rod, to give us the opportunity to make plays and we’ll make his job a lot easier.

D.J. Williams, Linebacker (On stopping the Patriots running game) The first two games we knew they got over a hundred yards rushing and they could pound the ball, but we knew if we played our brand of football, it would be tough on them.

(On 1st quarter hit on Benjamin Watson) You know he’s a big guy and I came in and tried to give him a shot. He took it and I kind of felt the brunt of it.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS HEAD COACH BILL BELICHICK

BB: Well, I'd say the big thing tonight was we just got out-coached and outplayed. They did a better job than we did. I know that is obvious. We were able to take advantage of the few mistakes that they made. They didn't make very many. They were able to take advantage of the ones that we made and capitalized on them. They are a good football team. Give them credit. They did a good job. We have to go back to work and we are going to need improvement in every area, so that is what we are trying to do this week. We have to just keep getting better, keep working harder, and try to practice some other things that obviously we need to do better out there. And that covers every area.

Q. Is there any explaining some of the stuff that was happening on third down in the red zone in critical situations tonight?

BB: We need to coach and play better.

Q. Bill, in the last two minutes, down 10 when it was fourth and one. Did you think about going to the first down or kicking a field goal, getting within seven --

BB: We thought about it. It was short yardage. It was only a long yard or two. It would have been a long kick. We felt we should pick the yard at that point. We needed to pick it up. If it had been longer, fourth and ten, that type of thing, we probably would have kicked it. Fourth and two, we probably would have kicked it.

Q. Bill, are you at all concerned that Tom (Brady’s) frustration in the passing game is starting to affect his play?

BB: I think we all need to coach and play better. That goes for everybody.

Q. I mean his body language tonight, we’re not used to seeing that, he seemed to be a little more animated, a little more irritable than usual.

BB: Well, I think you can put everybody in that same category.

Q. Was it encouraging at all to see Doug (Gabriel) make some contributions to the offense the way he did on that touchdown drive?

BB: Well, I mean there were some positive things out there but not enough of them. We need for there to be more. We just need to do a better job all the way around. So there were some things that were good, but we need to do more.

Q. Can you chalk up any of the struggles to there being so many new guys and trying to work guys in the system and everything and build continuity in the passing game?

BB: We just have to work harder, correct the mistakes that we made. We have to do better.

Q. What happened on the kick, on Stephen (Gostkowski’s) kick?

BB: It got blocked. I will have to take a look at that.

Q. Bill, could you have reviewed that punt that was almost the safety, was that a reviewable play?

BB: Yes. But I didn't think he was in the end zone.

Q. Bill, the inability to get the ground game going, was that just that they executed poorly?

BB: We have to do a better job. We have to coach it better. We just have to do a better job. They are a defensive team but we need to, we need to do everything better. So whatever you want to list, whatever you want to ask about, the answer, can we do it better? Yes. So whichever one it is, special teams, offense, defense, running game, passing games, penalties, whatever you want to ask, the answer is yes.

Q. How much of a barometer did you consider this game given Denver's running as a playoff team?

BB: Every game is important.

Q. Do you feel it says something about you guys?

BB: It says they were better than us tonight. That was obvious.

Doug Gabriel, Wide Receiver (On the feeling of the team after his touchdown) "You feel like you are always in it. You never count yourself out. That is one thing I like about this team. We never count ourselves out and I love it. We just keep it going. We are going to do that all year and I love it. We are never out of a game."

(On whether it was frustrating not getting in the game in the first half) "No, not actually. They come back to the sideline and I tell them what I see. I'm a team player and I tell them what I see and what we should look out for."

(On whether there was a reason why he wasn't on the field in the first half) "No there was no reason. We all work together. It wasn't my time. I just have to wait until my number is called."

Daniel Graham, Tight End (On the play of the offense) "We didn't make any plays on offense. We know we can't do that if we plan to get wins out of this league."

(On the struggles of the run game) "It is frustrating not being able to run the ball. We have been doing that the last couple of games and been running pretty well. We have to go back to the drawing board and see what we did wrong here and move on."

(On whether the offense is getting frustrated as a whole) "Today was a rough day for us. It was frustrating today not being able to move the ball and do what we do. Like I said we have to get back to the drawing board and see where we messed up and get better."

(On whether the Denver defense did anything unexpectedly) "No, they didn't do anything differently. We didn't execute on offense. We have to do a better job in the run game and the passing game."

Asante Samuel, Cornerback (On whether he felt there were bad officiating calls) "I don't get into that. It is what it is. Bad calls or good calls, you have to deal with it and make up for it." (On Javon Walker's long touchdown) "It was over-the-top coverage. Anyone of us should have made the play. It is not on him, but on me too. Either one of us should have made the play."

(On preparing for the Cincinnati game) "You saw what was out there tonight. We have a lot to work on. We have to go out and watch the film and practice hard like we know how to do and go out and play Patriots football."

Ty Warren, Defensive End (On the success of the Denver ground game) "They broke a couple of big runs here and there. It wasn't like it was happening the whole day, but at the same time those are plays that you wish didn't happen or wish you could have back. That is a special team over there. They made plays and you can say that they had the upper hand as far as some of those big plays."

(On the success of the Broncos run game compared to the playoffs last year) "It was an execution thing and a scheme thing. There is a lot of time between last year and when we played them today. They came out and did a couple of things that they would usually do that is really not tabbed as a Broncos running scheme. They came out and did some different things. That is a credit to them and hats off to them. They did a good job today."

Ben Watson, Tight End (On what the Pats didn't do) We didn't play well on offense. Hats off to their defense. They did a great job. On offense, obviously we want to put points on the board, and we didn't do that. We didn't fulfill our goal.

(On Tom's frustration) Tom's a competitor. He lets you know if he's not happy with what is going on. That's what makes him great a great quarterback, leader and motivator.

(On Doug Gabriel) He came in when his number was called and he was ready to go. That's all you can ask.

(On Denver's defense) The defense played well. My hat's off to them. They deserved to win. They played well. We also didn't execute as good as we needed to. (On not having Corey Dillon late in the game) Any time you lose a running back like Corey it's going to hurt, but we have great running backs with Laurence [Maroney] and Heath [Evans] and [Kevin] Faulk. They come and do their thing.

Dan Koppen, Center (On the loss) It came down to execution and consistency and we didn't have that. We had some drives going and we just stalled in the middle of them. We really just couldn't get anything going the whole night. They played well. We really didn't play well enough. It's one of those deals.

(On the running game) I think it is definitely disappointing around here that we couldn't get it going. It's just one of those things. It was a bad night for everybody. We have to come back next week and practice stuff.

(On Denver's scheme) They played it pretty straight. It just came down to execution and we didn't have it.

Rosevelt Colvin, LB (On if the loss was a surprise) “I wouldn’t say it surprised us. We are just disappointed in our performance but you know they are a good football team. Their coaching staff is a good coaching staff and they got good quality players.”

(On if the Defense felt like they needed to make a big play to help the offense) “ We always go out there and expect ourselves to make a play and try to turn the tide. Weather the offense is scoring 50 or not scoring at all, we are going to try to do what we can to get them the ball as many times as we can.”

(On Defense’s performance) “ I don’t think we played well, we gave up too many points. We gave up more than our offense scored, so that doesn’t sit well with any of the guys on the defense. Regardless if you say we played well, we didn’t play well because we didn’t win the game and I think that’s the most important thing. Fortunately enough, this isn’t the end of the season like it was last year and we have 13 games left in the regular season to get to where we want to be.”

Tedy Bruschi, LB (On if the loss was a surprise) “ I don’t know, we expected to play well and play better than we did but we didn’t. We got beaten but we have to come back tomorrow and get ready for another team.”

(On what was the difference tonight) “ It was more than one thing. I wish I could put my finger on it but I think they just played better than we did and that was a big play in the 4th quarter when they got 7 points on us on that long pass. Our offense tried to get us back the best they could, but defensively we needed to make more plays and I don’t think we caused a turnover again tonight and I think that’s a problem we have and have to work on.”

(On if it was frustrating that they had Denver on their goal line multiple times and couldn’t stop them) “ We talk in the huddle and we want to hold them down there and get our offense good field position. They converted on some third downs and made some good runs to get out of being backed up like that. I know it seems like last time we played them, but we need to give them credit because they made the plays against us again tonight.”

(On if they threw any surprises at the Patriots) “ No, we had a good week of preparation and that’s the thing that is so disappointing because we really worked hard this week and put in our time and were really prepared. It was tough the way the season ended last year and we wanted to put out a good performance and to beat this team. To come out and play like we did, they were able to do the things they did and that’s very disappointing.”

(On what makes Denver’s running game so tough to defend) “ It’s a combination of things. They got offensive linemen who block well and Tatum Bell hit the hole hard and was able to break some tackles and make some big runs on us that usually don’t happen.”

Richard Seymour, DL (On the defense’s performance ) “ They just made more plays than we did tonight. They put up more points on the scoreboard, and we didn’t put up enough and that’s the bottom line. We still got a lot of work to do and we are facing a good football team next week and our work is cut out for us. We just have to go back and watch the film and look at what we did wrong and correct our problems.”

(On not being able to shut down Denver at their goal line) “ Like I said, we just didn’t do a good enough job. I felt like we just didn’t get in a rhythm and when we had them we just didn’t close the door. We didn’t make the plays when we needed to make them and we just didn’t get off the field when we needed to. We didn’t put up any points on the scoreboard and we didn’t help ourselves. Defensively, we are not putting up any turnovers and not giving the offense more chances to put up points on the scoreboard.”

QUARTERBACK TOM BRADY

Q. Well, do you want to take a stab at telling us what happened, especially in the third quarter? TB: I just don't think we made enough plays, obviously. You know, I thought we did some big moving the ball, we just couldn't put together enough good plays in a row to get the ball in the end zone, maybe [we] just put too much pressure on our receivers in the fourth quarter, you know, to overcome that deficit. Just didn't make enough plays.

Q. How much of a factor was not having Corey Dillon the last three quarters? TB: You’d would always like to have everybody out there. But you know, Laurence (Maroney) does pretty good when he is in there and so does Kevin (Faulk). And obviously, we would love to have Corey (Dillon) out there, but it is kind of part of the game.

Q. Tom, do you have to be careful with your frustration in the passing game, and where you want it to be? Obviously it is not there yet, but you can’t let it affect your play. Is there kind of a fine line there? TB: I think we did some good things in our passing game tonight, some better things than we did the last few weeks. We are making improvements. It wasn't great tonight and that is why we lost. So we just have to play together. We have a tough game next week. We have to have a good week in practice.

Q. Tom, what was the difference in the fourth quarter from the first three quarters in the passing game? TB: I don't know. I will have to see the film. I don't know.

Q. Was it timing with your receivers? TB: No. I think we didn't do terrible in the first half. We just didn't put together enough good plays on the field. I mean you have to go the length of the field, you have to put together 13, 14 good plays. We just didn't stay on the field in the first half. We just didn't do it consistently enough to score points.

Q. Tom, your touchdown drive, Doug Gabriel came up with some big catches for the first time. Did you see him actually make some catches and make some runs after the catch? How impressed were you, as he got significant playing time tonight? TB: Yes, he did some good things out there and he is going to really help our offense. It was good to have him out there and have him make a play. He was fighting a few injuries the last few weeks. That shows his toughness and competitiveness to come out there and play the way he did. So it was good.

Q. Tom, did Denver take away your first option a lot tonight? Did you have to make consistently second and third reads to find a receiver that was open at all? TB: They just played well. They don't ever really make a lot of mistakes when they play us, so I think that is the difference. They covered us pretty good on some plays and, like I said, I think at times we moved the ball decently. Just not enough, you know, not enough to overcome the deficit. We dug a hole and we just couldn't dig ourselves out of it. They've got some good coverage plays, good guys at secondary, fast linebackers, good pressure on us. You know, just like I said, we just didn't do enough tonight.

Q. So you think things are getting better? TB: You’d always like to win so, in that sense, we are 2-1 and we’re going on the road. I like some of the things we did in the passing game. I mean, I really did. I thought guys were working hard to get open, Reche (Caldwell) made plays, Troy (Brown) made plays, the line protected well. We just didn't do enough of it. It is a building process. You know, it is a 16-game season. Not that you try to always find bright spots when you lose games, because we all try to win the games, but we didn't turn the ball over tonight. That was good. That was a big point emphasis this week. We just didn't make enough plays in the first half to get down all those points and you need to be perfect throughout the rest of the game, we just weren't perfect.

Q. Was it a setback to not have Chad (Jackson) out there this week as he was showing some signs last week? TB: It will be good to have him back out there. Hopefully, he will be out there as soon as he is ready to go. Guys out there tonight played really hard. I thought Reche (Caldwell) and Doug (Gabriel) and Troy (Brown) really played hard. The backs ran hard. I think they did a pretty good job with our running game. We got down, we were one dimensional. They looked pretty good in coverage. They have got some good tough guys out there. After you start running the same routes six or seven times, they start jumping stuff. I just wish we had a few more of those plays early on.

Q. The flea flicker to Troy (Brown), just -- TB: I mean you just lay it out there and hopefully he makes it. I know we were close, so I would’ve like to.

Q. Tom, your initial reaction to play in the preseason game in China? TB: Like I said, it was rumored for a bunch of weeks, so I always think it would be fun. I love traveling so I am looking forward to it. It is a long ways away. But I think it is cool that the Patriots are one of the teams they chose.

Q. Getting back to tonight, the no huddle worked really well on your touchdown drive. Is that something that you thought of maybe -- TB: Yes. It was the fourth quarter and we have got to try to create some momentum for ourselves and up the tempo. We did that. It was a good drive to go down there and score. I would like to do that three or four times a night.

Q. Then you get the ball back, you get to force the point and then it didn't happen. I mean how frustrating was that to go down for an 80-yard drive, get the ball back, and you go hey -- TB: Yes. Three and out, the first play, they played the coverage that they hadn't played much. And I just kind of threw it away. The second one, what did I do on the second one? I don't remember. The third one, I threw it away. So yes, they did play good pass defense and we just have to go back and evaluate the film, try to make the improvements and go out there and try to win next week.

Q. Tom, how much of an impact is it on you as a quarterback against the team with a pressure defense like Denver, not having (Deion) Branch and (David) Givens out there? TB: Oh, man, I am just so far past that at this point. I'm just dealing with the guys we have. I think the guys we've got are playing hard and trying to do the right thing. And we are all growing in this together. So Doug (Gabriel) has been on our team basically for three weeks now, so we are trying to get him up to speed. Reche (Caldwell), it’s his first season. Laurence (Maroney), we have a lot of moving parts coming together. We are trying to make improvements each week and, you know, I am proud of the fight we have. We just didn't play well enough and that is what it comes down to. When you play a team, Denver didn't make any mistakes and they didn't do anything to hurt themselves. You know, I thought they played pretty well. So I wish we could have played up to that level. I wish we could have put some pressure on them by hitting a few more plays there in the first half. You know, we just weren't able to do that.

Q. Tom, personally, over the first three weeks, how do you assess your own play during the first three games? TB: Like I had said, I think we are building. We’re trying to improve things each week. It wasn't great the first week. There were some better things the second week. There were some better things this week. So we are working hard to improve. I mean I played enough seasons to realize when you are in the third game of the year, no one is at the point where they need to be anyway. So it’s probably another six or seven games before teams really start forming an identity and that is where our team is at. And like I said, it is important to have a good week of practice this week and go on the road and try to be a good team.
