 – Notes

Activity type : Tense review, verb formation, gap fill, writing.

Grammar: Past Simple, Present Simple, Present Continuous, Present Perfect, Future Simple, First Conditional

 Time: 30 mins.

 Level: Intermediate

Note: Taken from ’s third “Shock Value II”, the inspiration for the song came from the ’ “” (there is also a worksheet for this song on www.tuneintoenglish.com ). Timbaland explained “when I heard the song I said ‘I want a record just like that on my album’. It’s happy, it gives a good feeling.” Although the song is about two people being attracted to each other in a bar but being too shy to do anything about it, the video focuses on the love story between a jewel thief and an art thief.

1) Give each student a copy of the worksheet and ask them to fold it so as they cannot see the lyrics. Ask them to complete the first exercise. Depending on their level, allow them to work without help for a few minutes then elicit (or tell them if necessary) the tense of each sentence.

Key: 1-3 - Present Simple; 4-6 Present Continuous; 7 Past Simple; 8 Present Perfect; 9,10 First Conditional

2) Play the song. Students listen for each sentence, and tick it as it appears, while checking their answers. Point out that some sentences appear more than once.

3) Tell students to unfold the page, and to insert each sentence in the correct place, based on context and their answers to the previous activity.

4) Play the song. Students check their answers.

5) Point out that the singer drops some words in some of the lines – this is grammatically incorrect, but make the song flow better. Can students spot these words? Key: line 3: What are you drinking? line 4: what are you thinking Chorus: I won’t let you get away Second verse: I hope you don’t see me blush

6) Point out the following words in the song, and elicit their meanings:

ain’t, wanna, gotta

Key: am not, want to, got to (must)

7) Sing together. If you would like to divide the boys and girls, the male singer’s parts are in italics in the Complete version of the song on page 3 of this worksheet.

Follow up:

Watch the video. Students write a news report based on the events portrayed.
