Thanks Bridge Trust Bridge © Louise Howell Buzz would like to thank Bideford Bridge Trust for their continued support, and generous grant to us in October. Without this donation we would find it hard to continue. To quote from an article written for Buzz by Peter Christie in 2014: ‘You may be surprised at what the Trust does – certainly, without its benign presence in the town, Bideford and its surrounding area would be by far the poorer. If you wish to know more about the Trust and its history there is a small booklet entitled ‘The Long Bridge of Bideford through the centuries’ available from Walter Henry’s in High Street or the Burton Art Gallery and museum.’ (and Bideford Library). The following articles about the Trust by Peter Christie are all available on our website at the following links: Bridge Trust http://bidefordbuzz.org.uk/2013/11/more-about-the-bridge-trust/ http://bidefordbuzz.org.uk/2014/01/more-about-the-bridge-trust-2/ Bideford Bridge goes to War http://bidefordbuzz.org.uk/2012/11/bideford-bridge-goes-to-war/ http://bidefordbuzz.org.uk/2013/01/bideford-bridge-goes-to-war-part-2/ http://bidefordbuzz.org.uk/2013/02/bideford-bridge-goes-to-war-pt-3/ http://bidefordbuzz.org.uk/2013/03/bideford-bridge-goes-to-war-part-4/ There are also bound copies of back numbers of Buzz at Bideford Archives if you prefer the paper version. Reading in B ed ' by S ue Gee Discu ssed by Bideford Lib rary Read ers' Group . I was immediately ' hooked ' by th is n ovel and found it absorbing and thou ght provoking. Gee's sensitive and perce ptive obs ervations of deep frie ndship s, grief and family relation ships made me re flect on my own and othe r clos e friends' life e xpe rie nces. Did o & Georgia , their love of literature a nd o bvious deligh t in spending time in each other's compa ny, evokes the sadness each of them suffer la ter on. Georgia ba ttles on with everyday life after the lo ss of a much loved h usband an d is cop ing courageo usly with her loneliness and despair whilst Did o has p rob lems o f her own to deal with including her husband 's p ossible unfa ithfulness. Whateve r life throws at th em they seem to mu ddl e thro ugh and kee p go ing. There is humo ur a nd many of us may h ave la ughed out lou d and c heered at Ge orgia's annoyan ce and disapp rova l at the misuse of 'like' and 'as if' and her lo nging for correct grammar (eve n on Radio 4 ! ) ' Readin g in Bed' ma y have b egun with brig ht and breezy conversations and quiet thoughts but we discover man y dee per and sometimes sinister issues within the nove l. Gee manages to co nvey real life with in two famili es, and as the rea der enters the mind of ea ch chara cter we witness grief , passio n, h urt and anger , as well a s forg ivene ss and acce ptan ce. This novel is probably more pop ular wit h olde r re aders an d may be critic ised for portray ing two mid dle class families. Na rrative sudden ly turns into speech with just the use of a dash instead of spe ech marks which is slightly annoying. Some memb ers of the gro up foun d it prete ntious and disliked the use of th e present ten se. However, I will be r eading mo re of Sue Gee's novels as I fo und the storyline gri pping and moving. 8 a t alk by Dave Edge combe ‘The Chan gin g Ch ara cter of ou r co ast ’, Six membe rs of the B ideford Libr ary Read ers’ g roup attended th is talk a t the A ppled ore B ook Festival. How do we know that the areas arou nd our coast are changing? Some changes take place in livin g me mory, some are an ecdotal, a nd so me we may read abo ut. Dave presented clear eviden ce of change that has o ccurred in this designated ‘Area of Outstand ing B eauty’, th rou gh compa rison of pictures and maps, old and new, and aerial pho tograph s. Fro m this eviden ce we were able to iden tify man made chang es an d those naturally cau sed such as by erosio n. Some change s were more obvio us than others. By com paring ‘then and n ow’ photographs of Westward Ho! and Woolaco mbe the impact of man-made change could clearly b e seen. In the mid 1800s for example there was just a s ingle farm at Westwa rd Ho! F ollo win g th e publication of Kin gsley’s Westwa rd Ho ! howe ver it became a purpose built Vi ctorian resort and has continued to have ‘growth spurts’ eve r since. We were left wonde ring wh o con trols deve lopment in the se a reas to b alance human needs with th at of the environment: a debate best left for another ti me! Comparison of ‘then and now’ phot ographs can some times be misle ading though . Photographs o f Hartland Qu ay su ggest little has changed whereas in fact from 150 0 to the late 19th century it was a b usy port a nd what is n ow the hotel onc e housed a pub, a ban k an d customs h ouse. Photographs of al so sug gest little ch ange in the building s but the way of life has shifte d dramatically from depende nce on fishin g to tou rism. Photographs an d o ld map s were used to show th e im pact of erosion on our coastline. What would Westward Ho ! lo ok like withou t the se a de fences that have been built? Walkers on the coast path will occasionally come across stretches of old tarma c where the original roads have been abandon ed due to erosion. Comp arison of Clovelly’s Ho bby Drive ma ps sh ow that part of its prese nt lo cation is further in land than the original driv e, a gain due to erosi on undermining the cliffs. On a more ma cabre n ote, erosion near Croyde once unco vered the gra ves of shipwrecked marin ers who h ad been burie d on unco nsecrated ground be cause the ir religio n was unkno wn. We were fascina ted to learn – again from old maps – that in the 180 0s ther e were three lifeb oat station s in the estuary, Appl edore 1,2 and 3. Number 3 was on Braunton Burrows ye t ma nned by Apped ore men, who, wh en ca lled out, had to cross to Crow Point then run to the station ! Ma tters weren’t help ed by the fact that the horses to tow th e lifeboat had to co me from Braunton! Several of Dave’s pho tograph s were from the Beaf ord A rch ive who have an online gallery to wh ich you are in vited to contri bute any further knowledge or in formati on. Can y ou help date some of their old archive ima ges or perh aps even name some of the peop le in them? The ir gallery can be fou nd on www.faceboo k. com/Beafo rdArchive/ Peter Evans
