Beşiktaş JK return to the UEFA Champions League after a six-season absence with a trip to Portugal to take on SL Benfica. • It is the first time the sides have faced each other on the European stage. Match background Benfica • They also met Turkish opposition in last season's group stage, losing 2-1 at Galatasaray AŞ and winning by the same score at home. • The Portugese side won three of their five home games in last season's competition, losing 2-1 against Club Atlético de Madrid on matchday six. They were knocked out by FC Bayern München in the quarter-finals ( 0-1 away, 2-2 home). • Benfica were 3-1 aggregate winners (2-0 home, 1-1 away) against a Trabzonspor AŞ side coached by Şenol Güneş, now in charge of Beşiktaş, in the 2011/12 third qualifying round. • Galatasaray's 2-0 win in Lisbon in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage was Benfica's only blemish in an otherwise faultless home record against Turkish opponents. They have won all other such fixtures, including a 3-1 victory against Fenerbahçe SK in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League semi-finals to progress to the final where they lost 2-1 to Chelsea FC. • The Portuguese side's overall record against Turkish clubs is W5 D2 L4; at home it is W5 D0 L1. Beşiktaş • Back in the UEFA Champons League for the first time since 2009/10, the Turkish Super Lig champions are hoping to negotiate the group stage hurdle for the first time at the sixth attempt. • They have lost all their previous matchday one fixtures in the UEFA Champions League. Seven years ago they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United FC at home in their first game but won by the same scoreline at Old Trafford. The Turkish team nevertheless finished bottom of Group B with four points, losing all their home games. • Beşiktaş met Portuguese opponents last season in the UEFA Europa League group stage. They drew 1-1 with Sporting Clube de Portugal at home on matchday two before losing 3-1 in Lisbon. • They have won twice in Portugal: 2-0 at SC Braga in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League round of 32 and 3-1 against Vitória SC in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage. 8 SL Benfica - Beşiktaş JK Tuesday 13 September 2016 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Lisbon Head coach Rui Vitória Date of birth: 16 April 1970 Nationality: Portuguese Playing career: Fanhões, UD Vilafranquense, Seixal Clube 1925, Casa Pia AC, GD Alcochetense Coaching career: UD Vilafranquense, SL Benfica (Under-19), CD Fátima, FC Paços de Ferreira, Vitória SC, SL Benfica • Born in Alverca do Ribatejo, in the Lisbon district, Rui Vitória spent the majority of his playing career as a midfielder with clubs from the Portuguese capital's metropolitan area. • Always plied his trade in the lower divisions and was a mainstay at Vilafranquense for nine seasons. After hanging up his boots at 32 in the middle of 2002/03, he began his coaching career immediately at the club, while simultaneously working as a PE teacher. • His first association with Benfica came two seasons later, as he led the Eagles' Under-19 setup for two years, a period which began his steady rise in Portuguese football. The first step was taken at Fátima in 2006, where his debut season was marked by promotion to the second division followed by immediate relegation, a journey repeated in the next two campaigns. • His good work led him to Paços de Ferreira in the top division. The first season ended with a seventh-place finish in the Liga and defeat by Benfica in the 2010/11 League Cup final. Sacked three games into the following season but only took a week to find a new employer, in the shape of Guimarães. • In four seasons at the helm of the Minho outfit, he made his name by building competitive sides with few resources, as well as detecting and developing young talents. His highlight was victory over Benfica in the 2012/13 Portuguese Cup final, only the second trophy in the club's history. On 15 June 2015, he was announced as Benfica's new coach on a three-year contract, and won the Liga and League Cup in his first season. Şenol Güneş Date of birth: 1 June 1952 Nationality: Turkish Playing career: Sebat Gençlik, Trabzonspor AŞ Coaching career: Trabzonspor AŞ (four times), , İstanbulspor, , , , FC Seoul, , Beşiktaş JK • Born in the Black Sea port of , Günes became a legendary figure at his local club, keeping goal in the Trabzonspor side that won the Turkish league title six times – and the three times – during his 15-year spell from 1972-87; also won 31 caps for Turkey, captaining the team on five occasions. • Made the natural transition from player to coach at Trabzonspor after hanging up his gloves, moving up swiftly from assistant to head coach; rejoined the club after spells with Boluspor and İstanbulspor, leading the team from 1993 to 1997, claiming the Turkish Cup in 1995 and a league runners-up spot in 1996. • After brief spells with Antalyaspor and Sakaryaspor he was appointed Turkish national team coach in 2000 and proved an immediate hit, leading the country not only to their first FIFA World Cup finals in 48 years but all the way to the semi-finals, and third place, of the 2002 tournament in Korea/Japan. • Left Turkey job after failure to qualify for UEFA EURO 2004 and returned to Trabzonspor but reign was brief and he later resurfaced in Korea Republic – the scene of his greatest triumph – with FC Seoul. • Returned to Trabzonspor for the fourth time in December 2009 and led club to Turkish Cup and Super Cup triumph the following year, Trabzonspor then finishing second in the 2010/11 Süper Lig. Spent 2014/15 at Bursaspor, guiding them to the Turkish Cup final, before taking charge at Beşiktaş in June 2015. Went on to win the league title in his debut season – his first championship as a coach.
