Welcome to Spandau Guide for Immigrants Welcome to Spandau Guide for immigrants German English Arabic Farsi Dari Kurdish French Russian Polish Turkish Dear Spandauers, We are delighted to present our guide “Welcome to Spandau”. This guide has been developed by the district’s Integration Officer (Integration Management Department), the organisational unit Quality Development, Planning and Coordination, and the Young People’s Office, as part of a cross-departmental collaboration. Around 240,000 people from a range of countries live in our district. Many new Spandau residents come from overseas. To help everyone settle in well, we would like to give you an aid to orientation with our “Welcome to Spandau” guide, which will make it easier for you to find your way round Spandau. The guide is divided into central themes, so you can find the specialist advice you need quickly and surely. We have put together a selection of the main advice centres within Spandau and also Berlin as a whole. The main aim of this orientation aid is to make it easier for all new Spandau residents to integrate into their social space and support the work of both the voluntary and official bodies. As well as German, the guide is available in English, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Kurdish, French, Russian, Polish, and Turkish. We would be delighted if this guide helps you find your feet in Spandau.     Focus on German Studies 20 41 Renaming Streets, Inverting Perspectives: Acts Of Postcolonial Memory Citizenship In Berlin Jenny Engler Humbolt University of Berlin n October 2004, the local assemblyman Christoph Ziermann proposed a motion to rename “Mohrenstraße” (Blackamoor Street) in the city center of Berlin (BVV- Mitte, “Drucksache 1507/II”) and thereby set in train a debate about how to deal Iwith the colonial past of Germany and the material and semantic marks of this past, present in public space. The proposal was discussed heatedly in the media, within the local assembly, in public meetings, in university departments, by historians and linguists, by postcolonial and anti-racist activists, by developmental non-profit organizations, by local politicians, and also by a newly founded citizens’ initiative, garnering much atten- tion. After much attention was given to “Mohrenstraße,” the issue of renaming, finally came to include the so-called African quarter in the north of Berlin, where several streets named after former colonial regions and, most notably, after colonial actors are located. The proposal to rename “Mohrenstraße” was refused by the local assembly. Nev- ertheless, the assembly passed a resolution that encourages the “critical examination of German colonialism in public streets” (BVV-Mitte, “Drucksache 1711/II”) and, ultimately, decided to set up an information board in the so-called African quarter in order to contextualize the street names (BVV-Mitte, “Drucksache 2112/III”).     Cambridgshire Memories of the Cold War era Our mission: to research, record and archive the local history of the Cold War era ฀ working with Cambridgeshire residents to tell our stories and commemorate 30 years since the Fall of The Berlin Wall. SpyNet is a National Heritage Lottery Funded project, led by New International Theatre Company. Thanks to partners The Norris Museum, Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust, Ramsey Youth Club (Crunch) and The Library Presents. Introduction The following texts are transcriptions of interviews from people who give a variety of personal perspectives on the Cold War. These are mainly from those serving professionally with RAF, USAFE, Civil Defence or the Intelligence services; but also included are the insights of a teenager growing up on a base, an artist who lived on the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain and the memories of people who protested at Molesworth. The memories begin in the '60s and cover the height of the Cold War in the '80s. The contributors all have a connection to Cambridgeshire, highlighting the importance of this period of history for the region. Today the activities have changed, USAFE U2 spy planes no longer fly from Alconbury and the RAF Nimrods no longer fly from Wyton, however cyber-espionage continues apace at undisclosed locations.
