Independent Candidate for Flin Flon, Clarence Pettersen ~ file photo by Marc Jackson

Back in our February 25th edition of the Underground Press, we asked each of the area candidates – who had been selected by their Terry Hornyak Rink main event winners (L) : Kelly Peterson, Hornyak, John Bartlett and Ross Schellenberg. ~ photo courtesy of Flin Flon Reminder parties at the time of that writing - to give readers an overview of who they are and what they stood for in respect to Snow Lake and the Main Event with a win over Flin Flon’s Trevor rest of the constituency. In addition to each candidate introducing A Snow Lake Men’s Curling team headed into Watt rink. themselves and providing their background, the paper asked them the ‘big smoke’ on the weekend of March 18 – Of note, the winner of the Main Event on the five specific questions. 20 and walked away with top honours in their As Independent candidate (and incumbent MLA) Clarence Pet- 84th Annual Men’s Bonspiel. Like most guys my age, I John Bartlett, and Ross Schellenberg took the spent a lot of time at the Whitney Forum playing hockey. After gradu- ating from Hapnot Collegiate, I got a teaching degree from Brandon University. My wife, Judy, and I got married during my last year there and took jobs teaching school in Carman, Manitoba. We stayed for a couple of years, spent some time traveling the world, then moved back to Flin Flon for good. During my thirty-three years of teaching, I raised three daughters, gained a son in law and two granddaughters, coached basketball and soccer, and also worked with Heather Acres to create the greening project, which, under Dave Price, has contin- ued to change the Flin Flon, Creighton landscape for the better. I also got involved with the Flin Flon Community Choir, taking part in three musicals, joined the United Church, and Rotary Club as well. Being an active member of the community is important to me. UGP: Why are you running for MLA under the Independent banner? CP: “It wasn’t really a choice. When I was challenged for the NDP nomination, only 260 members out of a possible 600 plus members voted. I’ve been a successful member of the Legislature on behalf of our constituency. The way this happened didn’t feel democratic. “In my last four and a half years I brought the Premier up north three times to visit, including a visit to Snow Lake, and brought many cabinet ministers as well. There are lots of things I’d like to accom- plish, and if I’m elected, I’m confident I’ll be able to carry through on them. At the moment, the polls show there could be a change, prov- ince wide. Since I am a bridge builder and have very good relation- ships at the Legislature, leaving party politics behind makes sense. My constituency is my only priority.” UGP: Why do you think you will win the riding? CP: “I would never assume a win. I hope that people in our constitu- ency recognize what I’ve accomplished on their behalf, which is almost $180 million in various projects for our constituency. I’ve always said, loud and clear, that I represent all the people, not just my friends. Some of those who wanted me gone are boycotting certain businesses in Flin Flon. How will a representative with that attitude be able to serve the constituency? It’s important to stand up for everybody.” UGP: What do you see as a priority issue for the riding in general and Snow Lake in particular? CP: “Affordable senior’s housing in Snow Lake is a priority for me. Financial encouragement for businesses and families to make their homes there would benefit the community as well. I’d like to make both happen.” UGP: What is the first thing you will get moving on when/if you are elected? CP: “Make sure the road from Snow Lake to #10 Highway is complet- ed, for safety reasons. I’ll meet with the mayors and council members of each community to hear their priorities.” UGP: A number of people have voiced concern about the loss or downgrading of the Northern Patient Transportation Program (NPTP)... I wonder if you could supply your position on the program going forward? CP: “This program has not been lost or downgraded. The rules regard- ing transportation were followed loosely, and Manitoba Health has asked that the NRHA follow the rules more closely. Otherwise, they have not changed. I'll fight to maintain the program as it is, because northerners don't need any more added costs to healthcare.” ~ Clarence Pettersen can be reached via email: clarencevpettersen@ gmail.com MJ like us on facebook Page 7 THE Underground PRESS April 7, 2016

Marlene has been away from Snow Lake for about 15 years now, but keeps up on people and events through her online subscription to The Underground Press. Retired since she left the community, Marlene spends much of her time with her children and grandchildren (Stacy and Lexy in Calmar and Tom and Marita in Edmonton). She was hoping to make it back for the 70th in 2017, but with her granddaughter's wedding that same weekend it seems unlikely now. Nevertheless, Marlene states that she thinks of Snow Lake and her friends there often... and passes on a big hello and best wishes for a great 70th celebration.

In order to formally memorialize and honour these comrades, a short solemn ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 28th at 7:30 p.m. at the Miner’s Memorial.
