The Theology of the Westminster Standards RTS - Atlanta Spring Term – 2021 04ST6370/1: The Theology of the Westminster Standards RTS - Atlanta Spring Term – 2021 “Creedal expression when faithful to the revealed counsel of God never becomes obsolete.” – John Murray I. Course Description A. In this historical and theological survey of the Westminster Assembly and its work, the major documents produced by the Assembly are studied in detail, with attention also given to the historical, political, and theological context of the Assembly. Such issues as the Westminster doctrine of Scripture, the Confession’s relation to the theology of Calvin, and the debate over church government are discussed. Priority is given to a theological analysis of the organically unified system of religion expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith. II. Course Details A. Dates: Feb 1–May 3, 2021 (No class April 5, 2021) B. Times: Monday (6:00–8:00 PM) C. Location: RTS-Atlanta Campus D. Instructor: Dr. R. Carlton Wynne E. Contact: [email protected] III. Course Goals A. To aid students in employing the Westminster Standards as confessional documents for the church. B. To promote the Scriptural theology taught in the Westminster Standards, with a view to further preparing men for ordination and to enable others to engage in ecumenical fellowship and dialogue within the international Reformed community, C. To familiarize the students with the historical, political, and theological background of the Westminster Assembly, along with some relevant secondary literature. IV. Course Philosophy and Structure A. Students of theology need to be steeped in the Word of God and familiar with the best statements of faith produced by the Christian church. These are prerequisites for usefulness to the church. For confessional Presbyterians, that means knowing the Bible and understanding the Westminster assembly’s catechisms, and the Confession of Faith as revised between 1789 and 1903. For non- Presbyterian students, a study of the Westminster assembly and its texts remains theologically and spiritually enriching, and will help them to engage with others within the Reformed community. B. The course will mainly consist of lecture material on the chapters of the Westminster Confession of Faith, with supplemental detours into the catechisms at relevant junctures. After an opening defense of creeds and confessions, along with a survey of the historical and political context of the assembly, the course will examine the structure and content of the Confession—noting key debates among the Westminster divines and the different emphases between the Confession and catechisms—before closing with a discussion of formal subscription to the Westminster Standards in the church. It is recommended because it contains the text of the Confession, as well as the two Westminster catechisms, the Directory for Public Worship, and a number of other important documents related to the Westminster assembly. 2. Number your pages. A. Class Participation (15% of grade) 1. Prompt class attendance is, of course, crucial to the benefit of the student. The student will want and need to engage attentively with the course exposition and assignments, and to participate in 2 class interaction in various ways. 2. Please turn off your cell phones. Checking your phone in a class discussion or lecture is as thoughtless as checking it while holding a conversation with another person. Relatedly, please do not check email or chat online during class. Of course, you should feel free to use your class break for this purpose. 3. Please notify the instructor if you are providentially hindered from attending a particular class period. For extensions, see the “Extension Policy” provided by the RTS-A Registrar at the end of this syllabus. 4. The primary (but not exclusive!) expression of participation will be in a class debate centered on the readings by Troxel, Rehnman, and Moore on English hypothetical universalism and the Westminster Confession of Faith. This exercise will take place during class on Week 9 and is meant to be enjoyable, though some diligent preparation will be needed for your joy to be full (cf. Phil 2:2–4). The chapters you select must come from different “parts” of the confession. The “Table of Contents” notes nine parts. So you will choose one chapter from at least six of these nine. b. You need answer ONLY ten questions from each chapter that you select. c. Please reproduce the questions in your written responses. d. Your answers should typically be 1-3 sentences in length. 2. Provide in 2 pages your own commentary on any section/paragraph (not chapter!) of the Westminster Confession of Faith. Imagine the commentary as a teaching tool for adults or teens in your church. Comment on a section/paragraph that you do not treat in any other assignment (such as C.1, C.3–6, or D.2). 3. In 1–2 pages, summarize the most important observations or arguments in J.V. Fesko, The Theology of the Westminster Standards: Historical context and theological insights (Wheaton, IL: 3 Crossway, 2014), any two chapters. 4. In 1–2 pages, summarize the most important observations or arguments in Robert Letham, The Westminster Assembly (Phillipsburg, NJ: P&R, 2009), any two chapters from chapters 7–15. 5. In 1–2 pages, summarize the most important observations or arguments in Beattie, Francis R. Beattie, The Presbyterian Standards (Richmond, VA: The Presbyterian Committee of Publications, 1896), any two chapters from chapters 3–23. 6. Indicate that you read the entirety of Chad Van Dixhoorn’s Confessing the Faith (Carlisle, PA: The Banner of Truth Trust, 2017), as well as items listed in Assignment ‘B’ above. E. Final Exam OR assignment OR essay (40% of grade) – COMPLETE BY MAY 15, 2021 1. Students may take a 2-hour written exam on the content of the course, focusing on the lecture material.

It was a series of events in England during the 1500s which resulted in the Church of England breaking away from Roman Catholic Church. ii. It was initially sparked by King Henry VIII’s desire for a divorce, but ultimately led to reformation in the Church of England. b. The Puritans i. The Puritans were those during the 16th and 17th century who thought the English Reformation hadn't gone far enough. ii. The Puritans were not agreed on the reforms. c. Political Timeline i. England and Scotland were united under one crown from 1625 to 1649. ii. English Civil War took place from 1642 to 1651. This is the timeframe of the Westminster Assembly, which began in 1643. iii. The Commonwealth of England existed from 1649 to 1660. iv. The restoration of the monarchy happened in 1660 with Charles II. 2. Effort in Unity: Forming the Westminster Assembly a. In the midst of the civil war, this was an effort by Parliament to seek advice on further reforms of the church, as an effort to unite a divided church. b. The English Parliament, without the king’s consent, called for the assembly on June 12, 1643. c. The members of the assembly were known as the Westminster Divines, comprised of 121 ministers of the Church of England, 6 commissioners representing the Church of Scotland, and 30 members of Parliament. d. The original intent was for the assembly to propose amendments to the Thirty-Nine Articles, which was the existing confession of faith for the Church of England.

Expanded Third Edition 2002 [Original 1982], Belfast/Greenville: Ambassador Emerald International, 2002, 538 pp., hc. ISBN 1-889893-72-2 This Dictionary of Theological Terms represents a large amount of labour on the part of the author, who is obviously a scholar of no mean ability. Rev. Cairns has pastored for over forty years in Northern Ireland and South Carolina and has lectured in systematic theology in the Theological Hall of the Free Presbyterian Church. The articles are largely, but not entirely, theological and are of unequal lengths. Cairns is thoroughly Calvinistic and gives some very fine entries on the various aspects of Reformed theology. In some ways the volume is as much a handbook on theology as a dictionary of theological terms – 125 Haddington House Journal, 2005 there is an evident intention to instruct and persuade the reader. As such it is a well conceived concept, for many who would never have the opportunity to look into volumes on church history or systematic theology might very well peruse a dictionary, yet it does not have the full scope that one might expect in a dictionary. In addition, the style is lucid and suited to the ordinary reader. Frequently in the course of a discussion one is helpfully referred to other topics for additional information. The entries generally reveal a decisive point of view, even in cases where Reformed people differ. For example, the creationist view on the origin of the soul is thoroughly rejected and the Traducionist espoused as the only tolerable one.

After alL we are in no position to sit in judgment on our fathers. We have inherited a confused and confusing situation which too many seem content to perpetuate. Neither can we expect to solve all the problems which men of greater wisdom and godliness than our own seemed unable effectually to resolw. Yet we should not be victims of our past. Despite Hegel's pessimistic observation. we ought to be able to learn from past mistakes. If the Apostle Paul insists that the Old Testament Scriptures were ·written for our learning' (Romans 15:4). then we have a clear duty to evaluate our past and mend our ways accordingly. That said. the very terms of the discussion are not immune from our own subjectivity and bias. One may be certain on objective medical and physiological grounds of the causes of heart failure. hut what is regarded as failure in Christian unity is largely determined by conflicting theological perspectives. All political parties agree that unemployment is a bad thing. hut they disagree when it comes to solving the problem. Likewise. even evangelicals differ in their ·policies' of ecclesiastical reunion. In the face of a dismal historical record. it is necessary to view our subject from a clear. Biblical perspective. When alll)ur uncertain and subjective evaluations have been sifted. we may be certain of one glorious. incontrovertible revealed truth: the unity of the elect people of God is an assured fact both in time and eternity.

    WTJ 72 (2010): 43-57 CATHOLICITY GLOBAL AND HISTORICAL: CONSTANTINOPLE, WESTMINSTER, AND THE CHURCH IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY ROBERT LETHAM ‘‘We believe in one, holy,catholic, and apostolic church’’: so runs the Niceno- Constantinopolitan creed, the one thread that holds together the tattered frag- ments of the Christian church. In this creed Constantinople I asserts four things: the unity of the church—it is one; its holiness—it belongs to God; its catholicity—the church is international, found throughout the world, and ‘‘teaches completely, without any omissions, all the doctrines which ought to be known to humanity’’;1 and its apostolicity—the church is founded on the apostles and the apostolic teaching. This Niceno-Constantinopolitan quadrilateral is based firmly on the teaching of the Bible. It is expressed clearly in one concise passage, Eph 2:11-22. Here Paul focuses on the unity of the church, for the Jew–Gentile division has been broken down by Christ so that ‘‘he made both one’’; ‘‘he created the two in him into one new man.’’ Peace with God in and through Christ simultaneously recon- ciles and unites the strongest enemies in one body to God through the cross. Later, Paul affirms that there is one baptism. In his other letters the same theme is prominent. Romans was probably written against the backcloth of tensions at Rome between Jewish and Gentile Christians. Yetthe gospel is for both, and both are branches of the same olive tree. Philippians addresses the need for the church to stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of persecution, for each to look not on their own interests but those of the other, for Euodia and Syntyche to reach a common agreement.

PHOTOGRAPHS.............................................381 PREFACE The Presbyterian Guardian was established by Dr. J. Gresham Machen to serve as the voice of Presbyterian orthodoxy. Conceived in controversy, the first copy issued from the presses on October 7, 1935. Machen spearheaded the publication of the Guardian with the assistance of a group of ministers and laymen in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA). The proximate cause of the Guardian was the disagreement between Machen and Dr. Samuel G. Craig, editor of Christianity Today (1930-1949). The nether cause was Machen's escalating struggle with modernism in the PCUSA. Machen had led in the formation of the Presbyterian Constitutional Covenant Union which was organized June 27, 1935 in Philadelphia. This group was committed to: (1) reform of the PCUSA; or (2) "failing that, to continue the true spiritual succession of that church in a body distinct from the existing organization." Dr. Craig had editorially questioned the wisdom of such a Union in the September 1935 issue of Christianity Today.
