Callan - St. Marys

Compiled by R. Harte & M.M. Phelan

This is a very interesting and varied collection of 16 cent. and 17 cent. tombstones in this graveyard, some inscribed, some not. Many of the coffin shaped slabs have well designed wheel crosses. The instruments of the passion are on the side of the Altar tombs, they also appear on an upright 18 cent. tomb No 21. Lettering is generally fairly clear except the horizantal slabs particularly those of the 19 Cent. Slab 117 in the nave of the ruined church is probably the bottom half of slab 146 inside roofed Church both have the same unusual broad incised letters.

The tomb of the parents of Edmond Ignatius Rice No 66 is so worn that its impossible to read.

Tomb 149 is a Rory O'Tunny tomb Tomb 113 Front slab is a possible Walter or Patrick Kerin carving. Tomb 48 is a Shea carving. Tomb 120 is signed by Walter Kerin (1583) Beautiful incised cross is identical with many in St. Canice's Cathedral where they are unsigned. Tomb 50 Covers remains of Thomas Shelly who erected monument Thomas Shelly died about 1906 resided in drapers shop opposite church here, artist, historian and archaeolo- gist. He wrote up the tombs in this church, first to do so and contributed articles on Callan and district to the translations of the Ossory Society 1884. Tomb 106 Patrick Cody was hon. sec. of the Callan Tenants's Protection Society from 1849 to 1854.
