the voice page 6 page 7 the voice Is your child due to start school in September 2021? At Ashby Church of school our goal is to inspire everyone to, achieve their full potential, challenge creative minds and encourage and nurture talent through our Christian values and our wholehearted approach of striving to ensure every child has the very best education.

“At Ashby C of E Primary our whole school community is encouraged to follow their dreams so that everyone succeeds and every day is a step to success. Our school allows us all to blossom and discover life within a solid Christian Foundation, providing a supportive and guided way through all aspects of life” written by Year 5 and 6 pupils. We are a happy school family and your child’s school journey begins in our Foundation Stage. Every member of our experienced, Foundation Stage team is dedicated to providing a loving, caring atmosphere where children can thrive and learn the importance of knowledge through a range of activities and opportunities.

We work closely with families because we understand the importance of a strong relationship between home and school. In 2018 our purpose built Foundation Stage unit was opened. Inside we have two large, airy open plan classrooms and two further smaller rooms that enable staff to give specifically designed activities to smaller groups of children to progress their learning further. The outside area is landscaped to provide a fantastic learning environment for all the children to enjoy, with a trim trail and nature lookout spots and bike paths it is a learning oasis but importantly still feels very much part of Ashby-de-la-Zouch community with views into the town. We look forward to welcoming your child in 2021 and supporting your child in creating their best future.

Hello Everyone, Here in Lapland we are all very busy getting ready for Christmas, but this year we have a problem that all of you boys and girls can help with. Because of the Coronavirus – yes we’ve got it here as well- we have been in isolation, and some of us have had to rest, so it is important that we all stay safe.

As much as I love to come and visit everyone in December, I couldn’t think how, when I will need to come back to deliver your presents, but Rudolph has suggested that we do things differently. We all know the rules about keeping our distance and that is really difficult, as I know you like to climb on my sleigh and have a chat. However, I don’t think I have enough hand sanitiser and anti- bacterial spray to let you all do that. So here is Rudolph’s idea. I will still visit Ashby de la Zouch and the surrounding area as usual, BUT with some changes. The sleigh will be out on the streets, as usual, during the evenings. I will ask my earth driver to go really slowly, so you can run down your drive and wave as I go past. Your parents will be getting some more information soon about a tracker, so that you know where I am and you will be ready when I come to your road. Also, be- cause I will not be stopping to talk to all of you, I will not be out every night, so your parents will have to look out for the dates. I also know that some of you, and your parents like to give us money, which my friends in the Rotary Clubs of Ashby de la Zouch use to help local charities.

Mrs. Claus will be letting you know how you can still do this and will send more information nearer to December. See you soon. Be good. Love from Santa ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH & COALVILLE LIONS We are a long-established local community service organisation that has served this area for over 44 years! But truth be known, we are probably the least well known – despite our best efforts. However, Community Voice has helped us to address that and we are grateful for this monthly slot to share our efforts, and ambitions, with you.

Sadly, the Ashby Statutes Fair did not take place in September due to Covid-19 restrictions, probably the first time in 800 years (this year would have been 801). Ashby Statutes was originally used as a “hiring” fair where landowners and workers could meet and agree a year-long contract. However, it also served as a place of entertainment and the Pat Collins Fun Fair has kept that tradition going to the present day. Anthony Harris, proprietor of Pat Collins Fairs, was determined that Statutes would not pass unnoticed this year and brought a children’s fairground ride to Ashby over, what would have been, Ashby Statutes weekend. Anthony, an honorary member of our club for 41 years, went even further and donated the proceeds of the fair ride to …. Ashby & Coalville Lions Club!

Anthony is shown with his wife, Christina, and their son Michael in front of the ride. We are grateful to Anthony and his family for their support to our club, and community, for over 40 years and we are proud that they are part of our Lions family. Thanks also to Paul Burrows (a former member) for his excellent photograph.

If you would like to learn more about our Lions Club, or know of a local need, then email [email protected] or visit us on Facebook. We are still in action despite Coved-19.

Students at Dixie Grammar School, , have not only returned to what has come to be expected in schools at the start of the 2020 school year, but also to what may prove to be a significant step into the future.

In line with government guidance, the Dixie has thought carefully about how to keep the whole school community as safe as possible. Gathering for whole-school assemblies and staff meetings, mass movements around the school and mixed year groups eating together are all on hold for now, whereas one-way systems, face coverings in corridors, anti-virus cleaning and hand-sanitisers are very much commonplace.

With an eye on the current situation and on the future, the school has also invested in making all classrooms accessible online within the school community, which means that even from home, pupils can play a full part in their timetabled lessons. With a couple of clicks, pupils can connect to the smart boards in their classrooms: whatever the teacher is explaining to the class can be seen from a pupil’s home computer, laptop or phone. Pupils no longer need to actually be in the classroom to watch experiments, listen to what their teacher is saying, to ask and respond to questions and to take part in discussions.

Headmaster, Mr Richard Lynn, commented: “The whole school, and the teaching staff especially, had to adapt very quickly during the first week or so of the national lockdown. We were determined to maintain both the pastoral support and academic progress of our pupils and had to learn how best to deliver this online and remotely. There were huge challenges both for this and in keeping the school open for key workers, but the feedback we had from parents and pupils was hugely positive. Upon returning to school, we felt we had to be prepared for as many eventualities as possible and that includes the likelihood that some pupils will be unable to attend school for a period of time for a variety of reasons. With the work we have done and the efforts of all of our support and teaching staff, these pupils can join their lessons and can get a learning experience almost as good as being in the classroom.”

The approach has already allowed two Sixth Form students new to the school to make a flying start to their studies, even though they have been unable to complete their planned move from Africa to the UK. Daniel and Kanyin have met new friends, their tutors and teachers solely online as they begin their A level study.

Not content with a major deluge on 18th May 1925 another downpour drenched the town on 22nd May 1932.

The latter became known as “The Greater Flood” and the Museum has in its archives a fascinating 1932 booklet written by A.G. Atkinson about the effect on the businesses and residents in Brook and Bath Streets, the Bath Grounds (all aptly named) and the lower end of Market Street. Atkinson recalled 1925, when “ominous clouds were seen to gather from all points of the compass, and they became so intense that ‘darkness covered the earth’…thunder was fearful and prolonged. A cloud burst at Smisby and balls of fire were seen.” Market Street “became in the course of a few hours a raging torrent, in places four feet deep, carrying on its bosom, debris from shops and dwellings it had swiftly invaded…”. Seven years later the Mill Bank culvert again overflowed the banks and those living on the Green and at Brook Street were advised to evacuate their homes or “move their goods and chattels upstairs”. The alarm soon spread: the common enemy, the Gilwiskaw, was at the gates. 1985 The water poured through Union Passage, destroyed the brick wall next to the Police Station, flooded the cells, to create a huge lake on the Bath Grounds. Eight foot deep in places, it left “the Pavilion looking like Noah’s Ark peeping out of the waste of waters”. The railway embankment had become a dam. A breach near the railway station meant at last the pent-up fury could be released into the Lower Packington Road and the meadows beyond. A Postscript to Atkinson’s account stated that the Urban Council had subsequently adopted a scheme by Mess. Pick, Everard & Keay, Engineers of Leicester, estimated to cost £3,000 to reconstruct the old town culverts. This seems to have [nearly] done the trick, as further flooding in 1939 and 1985 caused far less damage. Moreover, I feel shamefaced complaining about the puddles now forming on our courtyard below my window. Kenneth Hillier (Ashby Museum)

page 17 the voice Top 5 things to consider when your loved one is coming home from hospital Having a loved one admitted to hospital can be a very anxious and upsetting time, particularly during the current Coronavirus pandemic. The stress may be heightened by the fact that it might not be possible to visit your loved one in the hospital, and it can become frustrating waiting to hear when they will be discharged. One positive thing that you can however do is to the changes that you can make to their environment for when they return home that will make it a little easier and more comfortable. Alan Ferguson from Candor Care and Sophia Dickinson from Home Independence Occupational Therapy, talk about the top 5 considerations when your loved one is coming home from hospital.

Sophia Dickinson BSc (Hons.), MRCOT Founder of Home Independence Occupational Therapy Ltd

1. Adapting the home environment Look at your loved one’s home environment and consider their safety. Are there hazards such as clutter, loose cables or loose rugs or carpets in walkways? Consider falls prevention tips to reduce the risk of falls. Would your loved one benefit from grab rails or specialist equipment to help them to get in and out of their bath or bed? Can your loved one get up from the toilet without assistance? An Occupational Therapist can advise you about the most suitable home modifications for them. Do they have suitable clothing to accommodate their physical needs? Consider clothing that will be easy for them to put on and take off. Aim for them to be as comfortable as possible.

2. Considering their mobility Your loved one may have been seen by a Physiotherapist. If so, have they been given a walking aid such as walking sticks, crutches or a walking frame? Will the home environment accommodate the walking aid? If they live in a house, do you need an additional walking aid on the second floor? And if they have steps or stairs at home, have they practiced steps or stairs before returning home? Will they need grab rails or additional stair rails to support them? Does your loved one need a wheelchair? Check this prior to your loved one returning home. If the second floor is going to be a struggle for them, you may want to consider a stairlift as a rental or more permanent option. A stairlift can be installed to fit any shape or size of staircase, and can take the pressure off somebody trying to negotiate moving between the floors of their home, particularly if they have lost confidence or mobility after a major operation. It might also help to have an Occupational Therapy assessment to help to improve confidence.

3. Work on a reablement plan Reablement is the official title given to short-term care at home to aid recovery after discharge from hospital. Reablement can help your loved one to improve their skills and promote their independence. Goals can be set as part of a reablement program including exercises to rebuild strength and increase movement. Clear, structured actions can help to empower your loved one to become more independent with everyday activities, such as getting in and out of the bath or cooking a meal.

4. Take precautions Has your loved one been advised about what they can and cannot do when they leave hospital? There may be post-operative precautions or general precautions. It is advisable that you check with the medical team prior to your loved one returning home. What are the precautions and how long are they in place for? Does your loved one need to return for a follow-up review? If so, do you need to contact the hospital or will they contact you? Is there a reablement option to help your loved one regain their strength and ability? Do they need to shield themselves due to Coronavirus? Check with the medical team prior to discharge and ensure that you have all of the information you need before departing.

5. Involve them in meaningful activities Participating in meaningful activities can have a positive impact on our well-being. What are their favourite hobbies or leisure interests? What do they enjoy doing? Is it possible for them to participate in their favourite hobby? Can you adapt their hobby to suit their physical ability? Remember that the mind often needs stimulation too. Games, jigsaws, crosswords and puzzles can help keen the brain active and enhance well-being.

Useful resources For information and advice about stairlifts, home lifts and mobility products you can get in touch with Candor Care on 0330 100 4564 or visit www.candorstairlifts.co.uk to arrange a Call Back or free home assessment for your loved one under no obligation. If you would like support to help you and your loved one to manage after returning home after leaving hospital, then Home Independence Occupational Therapy can help. the voice page 18 STRANGESTRANGE TALESTALES TOPSY TURVEY By David Bell Topsy Turvey was a Leicestershire wrestler who boasted that he could turn any opponent from four counties upside down – topsy turvey – and throw them over his head. He lived in the hamlet of Bilstone, only a few miles from the spot where four counties of Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire all meet.

His real name was John Massey, and he was a hedger and ditcher. He enjoyed a reputation as a hard brutal man and a prolific drinker. He was a widower, and in 1799 he married his second wife, a widow with a ten year old daughter. One afternoon, Topsy Turvey was walking home after a session in the local pub, when he met his new wife. Nobody knows what she said to him: perhaps, “I’ve given your dinner to the dog!” or “Look at the state of you!” Whatever it was angered the man and he began to beat and kick his wife so hard that she fell to the ground with a broken leg. He then did no more than pick her up, carried her to the village watermill and threw her into the mill race, where she drowned. His step daughter tried to intervene so he threw her in too, but she swam to the bank and survived to give evidence against Massey when he was tried in Leicester for murder. The judge at his trial – Baron Vaughan – sentenced him to death. After he’d been hanged at Red Hill near Birstall, his dead body was taken back to Bilstone, fastened in iron chains, and suspended from a gibbet. The gibbet is still there and can be seen on the road from to Bilstone, the road being called, not surprisingly, Gibbet Lane. It is a seven foot post surrounded by a small fence, and bearing a notice with details of the crime.

I used to think that a hanged man was left on a gibbet for a few weeks, as a warning to the locals. However, John Massey’s body remained on the gibbet at Bilstone for eighteen years! Eventually his skull was stolen and taken over the county border into Atherstone. I have heard from two sources that it is now kept in the safe of a pub in the back streets of that town, and only comes out on Shrove Tuesday, following the town’s annual mass football event. A lady from Birmingham told me about her strange experience at Bilstone Gibbet. She had heard of the gibbet post, and wanted to see it After driving to Bilstone, she got out to note down the information on the notice board. “There was another lady there looking at the gibbet post. I nodded to her but she didn’t speak. She had a little girl with her, but she was skipping around and not taking any notice.” When the Birmingham lady was half way back to Birmingham, a sudden thought struck her. She told me, “I suddenly wondered why the lady and girl were dripping wet when it hadn’t rained all day!” She is now convinced that she’d seen the ghost of the murdered woman and her daughter. This supposition was made more certain when she developed the photos she taken of the post, and found no sign of the lady and the girl.

David Bell, local author, lecturer and founder of Ashby Writer's Club was born in in 1939, but has lived in Ashby-de-la-Zouch for 45 years. He was a Primary school teacher from 1960 until 1989, including twelve years as senior master at Whitwick Primary School. He then escaped from teaching, tunnelling out from beneath an increasingly large mountain of paperwork, to become a full-time writer. He is the author of over thirty books of left-field local history books. Twenty-five of these were published by Countryside Books, six by Bradwell Books, and two by Five Leaves Publications. David has an alter ego, Jack Wainer, who writes very dark crime and horror fiction. As well as writing, David gives talks to history groups, WI's, TWG's, union branches, libraries, Probus etc. In 1984, David founded Ashby Writers’ Club, which is still meeting twice a month, 34 years later.

Shelia Lunn, Chair of Ravenstone and Snibston Parish Council cut the ribbon on September 1st to officially open Adventure Playschool; a brand-new early years setting based in the village of Ravenstone, for 2-4 years olds.

Adventure Playschool is founded by Naomi Perfitt, a qualified teacher and an early years and play specialist. Passionate about providing unique learning experiences through play and the great outdoors, the children are taken off site for an adventure every day to explore the natural world around them.

We asked Naomi, ‘Why the emphasis on outdoor learning?’ “Research has shown that children learn best in an outdoor environment which allows for creativity and problem solving. They use their ingenuity and inventiveness to make up games, construct new imaginary worlds and find solutions to challenges. Outdoor learning has not only health benefits with increased exposure to vitamin D and physical exercise but also opportunities to take controlled risks. Activities such as tree climbing, mud slides and den building allow children to gain confidence with lifelong benefits.”

With highly qualified, nurturing staff, Adventure Playschool provides an inviting playroom bursting with invitations to play, and a garden equipped for exploration and creation. The setting has adapted to the ever-changing circumstances brought about by Coronavirus and has created a welcoming atmosphere whilst robust procedures are in place. page 21 the voice Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk 2020

Despite remaining optimistic through the summer months that the Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk would be able to return for it’s 6th year, sadly the organising committee have had to make the inevitable but very difficult decision not to hold the event this year in it’s traditional format. It’s sad to see another event fall victim to the ongoing Corona Virus pandemic.

While some limited mass participation events do seem to be taking place, they are under such strict conditions that we probably could not meet them, or at least meet them while maintaining the ethos and community feel of our event. We do though recognise that our event was very popular and bookmarked many peoples start to Christmas, so we have come up with an alternative for this year.

On Sunday December 13th at 11am we will be streaming via YouTube, and make accessible on our Facebook page, the “Ashby Santa Family Fun Workout 2020”! This will be a “Joe Wicks style” exercise session very much Christmas themed and aimed at fun loving people covering all ages and abilities, much like the traditional Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk. We will be encouraging all who take part to do so in Santa suits or fancy dress, but safe in their own homes or gardens. The fun workout will last for about 30 minutes and be interspersed with video footage from previous Santa fun runs. There will be no charge for taking part in this event although we will be welcoming donations from people who are able to via a JustGiving link and any money that we raise will be passed on to local charities as we would if we were able to hold our traditional event.

We hope that the event will at least bring some Christmas cheer to the Ashby Community and whilst it isn’t the event that we wanted to host, we felt that it was important to try and do something that will create a sense of Christmas joy within our community and to avoid this event simply being another full victim of this dreadful virus. We will be encouraging people to share their videos and photographs of them taking part in this fun event via our Facebook page and we’ll also be using a selection of the best ones on our event website. This has been a really tough year for a lot of people and we hope that the continuation of this event, even in a different form this year, will help to give families something to look forward to and to have some fun within the community. It’s also been a really tough time for local charities and so if any entrants feel that they are able to support this event by making some sort of a donation, we would be overwhelmed and we will pass funds raised on to some wonderful local charities. Whilst not offering formal sponsorship opportunities for businesses this year due to the event being toned down, if any businesses felt that they would like to make a donation towards the event for charity then we would give full credit on publicity material, social media and on our video on the day. If you can support us and want more details please contact the event director on [email protected]

There will be more information available on the Ashby Santa Fun Workout 2020 as we sort final details out via our website at www.ashbysantarun.com and our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ashbysantarun so please keep checking back for updates.
