UMNP Mountains Manual 2017
Mountain Adventures Manual utahmasternaturalist.org June 2017 UMN/Manual/2017-03pr Welcome to Utah Master Naturalist! Utah Master Naturalist was developed to help you initiate or continue your own personal journey to increase your understanding of, and appreciation for, Utah’s amazing natural world. We will explore and learn aBout the major ecosystems of Utah, the plant and animal communities that depend upon those systems, and our role in shaping our past, in determining our future, and as stewards of the land. Utah Master Naturalist is a certification program developed By Utah State University Extension with the partnership of more than 25 other organizations in Utah. The mission of Utah Master Naturalist is to develop well-informed volunteers and professionals who provide education, outreach, and service promoting stewardship of natural resources within their communities. Our goal, then, is to assist you in assisting others to develop a greater appreciation and respect for Utah’s Beautiful natural world. “When we see the land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.” - Aldo Leopold Participating in a Utah Master Naturalist course provides each of us opportunities to learn not only from the instructors and guest speaKers, But also from each other. We each arrive at a Utah Master Naturalist course with our own rich collection of knowledge and experiences, and we have a unique opportunity to share that Knowledge with each other. This helps us learn and grow not just as individuals, but together as a group with the understanding that there is always more to learn, and more to share. -

The scientific accuracy of the creations may not be as important as the learning, reasoning, and imagination used to construct each invention. Invent a Planet Students may create (draw, paint, montage, build from household or classroom items, whatever!) a planet. Does it have air? What color is its sky? Does it have ground? What is its ground made of? What is it like on this world? Invent an Alien Students may create (draw, paint, montage, build from household items, etc.) an alien. To be fair to the alien, they should be sure to provide a way for the alien to get food (what is that food?), a way to breathe (if it needs to), ways to sense the environment, and perhaps a way to move around its planet. -

Vision Statement The Space Science Institute is a thriving center of talented, entrepreneurial scientists, educators, and other professionals who make outstanding contributions to humankind’s understanding and appreciation of planet Earth, the Solar System, the galaxy, and beyond. 2 | Space Science Institute | Annual Report 2005 From Our Director Excite. Explore. Discover. These words aptly describe what we do in the research realm as well as in education. In fact, they defi ne the essence of our mission. Our mission is facilitated by a unique blend of on- and off-site researchers coupled with an extensive portfolio of education and public outreach (EPO) projects. This past year has seen SSI grow from $4.1M to over $4.3M in grants, an increase of nearly 6%. We now have over fi fty full and part-time staff. SSI’s support comes mostly from NASA and the National Sci- ence Foundation. Our Board of Directors now numbers eight. Their guidance and vision—along with that of senior management—have created an environment that continues to draw world-class scientists to the Institute and allows us to develop educa- tion and outreach programs that benefi t millions of people worldwide. SSI has a robust scientifi c research program that includes robotic missions such as the Mars Exploration Rovers, fl ight missions such as Cassini and the Spitzer Space Telescope, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and ground-based programs. Dr. Tom McCord joined the Institute in 2005 as a Senior Research Scientist. He directs the Bear Fight Center, a 3,000 square-foot research and meeting facility in Washington state. -

A special thanks goes out to Ogden-Eccles Conference Center, Hampton Inn and Suites, Union Grill, and Ben Lomond Hotel for hosting us and providing a comfortable atmosphere. As I sit in my office writing this message I take a moment to look out my office window only to have the western flank of the Wasatch Mountains distract my train-of-thought once again. The first thing that crosses my mind is how they maintain their ability to distract the eye and stimulate awe, despite the urban sprawl and unsightly growth surrounding the range. There’s a noticeable difference this year that I’m sure most of you are aware of by now. There is significantly less snowpack compared to the last few winters. We all know by now that the state of Utah is experiencing one of our poorest snow-years in awhile. The last few weeks have shown signs of hope, but we sill have a ways to go to get to normal. As professionals in the field of natural resources, we can’t help but wonder what effect highly variable snow-packs will ultimately have on our state’s environmental conditions. -

The Ultimate Journey Itinerary
The Ultimate Journey Itinerary visitutah.com /plan-your-trip/recommended-itineraries/mighty5/ultimate-journey A 10-day expedition from Salt Lake City through Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion national parks. 10 days in Southern Utah? Good choice. Take off your coat and stay awhile! You'll appreciate giving yourself a little extra time to experience each park more intimately and to be able to linger at incredible stops along the way. Explore the itinerary below or download the PDF now. Day 1: Salt Lake City to Arches National Park Distance: 231 miles/3.5 to 4 hours Adventure in Arches National Park picks up where 300 million years of patient erosion has resulted in unbelievably dramatic landscapes that look more sculpted by giant mythological beings than the processes of time. Arches National Park contains about 2,000 windowed arches, towering spires, harrowing hoodoos, and precarious pinnacles on display, including Delicate Arch, perhaps Utah's most iconic feature, which is a must-hike destination in the park. A paved 40-mile scenic drive from the park entrance provides numerous parking areas for trail access and scenic overlooks. Guided Tour: Reserve a tour through the Fiery Furnace. This twisting labyrinth of brilliant red rock fissures and spines is so intricate it is highly recommended to find your way through with a guide. Hikes: The 1.5-mile hike to Delicate Arch is beautiful, with the end reward of viewing Utah's famous landmark, a famed standing any bucket list. Or hike some of the easy short trails in the park, such as the Park Avenue Trail and trails in the Windows Section of the park, or some of the longer trails in the park, such as Double O Arch, Tower Arch, and Landscape Arch.
