Program Overview Sample Curriculum The Garn Family Jazz Studies Program enables young musicians to further their Band and Orchestra* studies in the art of jazz, with courses instructed by distinguished faculty, Big Band and Small Group Ensembles* including some of today's top recording artists, educators, and performers. The Classical Composition curriculum is modeled after a university-level jazz conservatory, creating Improvisation versatile musicians who are prepared to successfully enter the college or arts Instrument-Specific Master Classes conservatory program of their choice upon graduating. Students in The Garn Jazz Composition and Arranging Family Jazz Studies Program experience a breadth of opportunities that enhance Jazz History their development as musicians, including large jazz ensemble, small group Jazz Piano Class combos, wind ensemble (winds, brass, percussion), specialized instrument Jazz Theory master classes, musicianship courses that focus on traditional harmony and jazz Recording Studio Techniques arranging/composition, and exposure to professional guest artists and master Traditional Music Theory clinicians who are at the top of their field. * Placement by audition

In addition to school and community concerts both on and off campus, students participate in many of the major competitive jazz festivals. The program’s extensive jazz library offers students the chance to perform music ranging from the 1920s to today’s most distinguished composers.

In recent summers, the 714.560.0900 ext. 5674 | [email protected] Ambassador Jazz Orchestra has participated in the prestigious Segerstrom Summer Jazz Series, while the Jazz Combo has frequently been seen playing at Dr. John Reynolds is a highly sought-after educator, local OC hot spots, such as Fashion Island, Irvine Spectrum Center, and other clinician, and trumpeter. He holds a Doctorate of Musical high-profile venues and special events. Arts in jazz studies from USC as well as degrees from San Diego State University (SDSU) and Point Loma Nazarene University. Dr. Reynolds is well versed in instrumental conducting as he is a student of Larry Livingston (USC Thornton School of Music) and Sharon Lavery (Downey Symphony). He has conducted numerous wind ensembles, orchestras, and pit orchestras for various musical productions over the last 15 years.

Dr. Reynolds performs frequently with his own groups, the John Reynolds Jazz Quintet and the Gaslamp Quarter Jazz www.ocsarts.net/ApplyNow Orchestra. He has performed with jazz legends including John Clayton, , , Rickey Woodard, Graham Dechter, Jackie Ryan, Bob Mintzer, Peter Translated materials available upon request. In 2016, the SoCal Jazz Society recognized Dr. Reynolds as the Jazz Educator of the Year, and SDSU awarded him Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.

Dr. Reynolds created and directed the jazz studies program at San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, where he was presented with the Artistic Growth Award in recognition of his exceptional work. Dr. Reynolds is also a consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he serves as a guest artist, clinician, and adjudicator for regional Essentially Ellington festivals across the country.
