Press Release
2019 Sustainable Destinations Top 100 unveiled
For the fifth time the Sustainable Top 100 is unveiled at Global Green Destinations Days (GGDD) in Croatia. The Top 100 list celebrates efforts of tourism destinations for responsible and sustainable tourism. Nominators had to provide extensive information on their destination sustainability efforts. Nominations were evaluated by the Sustainable Top 100 Team and by members of the Top 100 International Committee and country experts, coordinated by Green Destinations. The Committee stresses that no destination is fully sustainable. In all selected destinations important issues remain to be solved.
Visitors’ carbon emissions are currently not taken into account in this competition due to the lack of suitable data. However, Green Destinations recommends travelling responsibly, appropriately compensating carbon emission, and encourages stayover tourism rather than mass cruise tourism.
The Top 100 winners will be celebrated and will receive their Certificate on 10 October 19:00 in Mali Losinj, Croatia. Mali Losinj is among the Top 100 and receives a Green Destinations Silver Award for major efforts for sustainable tourism.
The competition is organised by the Partnership for the Top 100 and the ITB Earth Award: Green Destinations, the Netherlands ITB Berlin, Germany Asian Ecotourism Network (AEN), Thailand Destination Stewardship Center, USA Ecotourism Australia Global Ecotourism Network (GEN), USA The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism Indonesian Sustainable Tourism Awards (ISTA) Linking Tourism & Conservation, Norway QualityCoast Awards, the Netherlands Sustainable Travel International (STI), USA TravelMole, VISION on Sustainable Tourism Bookdifferent.com
