Narrabeen Beach Goes Solar

For those members who don’t often get to fly over the club house, you may not be aware that Narrabeen Beach has gone solar. Through a grant provided by and installation by Autonomous Energy, Narrabeen Beach is able to support our electricity needs by harnessing the energy from the sun. Narrabeen is blessed with such sunny conditions that solar panels can provide most of the clubs daily needs for refrigerators, lighting and other daytime power.

We would like to thank Warringah Council and Autonomous Energy for their support in the process and installation. We have plans to further reduce our consumption of resources through installation of rain water collection tanks and possible solar hot water when funds become available.

IRB Report

Our Club was fortunate to gain some new IRB equipment this season. At the start of this year we acquired a new IRB thanks to the NSW Government’s Ministry for Police and Emergency Services, who funded a grant from SLSNSW. We also obtained two new IRB motors thanks to the Commonwealth Bank Referral Partner Program.

With our four events this season and a period of rough surf conditions, our IRB drivers and crews excelled - from pumping up IRBs at ActiononabiggerdayatNarrabeen 0530 in the morning, washing and cleaning late into the afternoon, to helping with water safety each week. They are a very dedicated bunch who provide a priceless service.

This season’s IRB crew squad ran for six weeks. As soon as it commenced, Narrabeen’s infamous shore dump booked itself in for over half of the course duration. The candidates who undertook this course were extremely resilient and put up with the trainers bashing and bumping them in some tough conditions. The training was led by Paul O`Keefe along with Rob Cook, Ian Roving Patrols Harper, Jason Oakes and myself. Only once did an IRB flip unintentionally straight onto the beach - I happened to be the driver and to this day blame the 1.5 metre shore dump.

We will hopefully be kicking off an IRB driver course again soon. If you think you have what it takes, then let anyone in the education team know so we can book you in. Thanks for an action packed season and hope to see everybody ready for their proficiencies soon.

A total of 47 awards were gained by members this last season and this would not have been possible without the guidance, diligence and commitment of the Education team headed by Gordon Coburn. The club owes a great vote of thanks to the trainers and all who assisted with training of new members and with older members gaining greater skills.

The training team also achieved a high level of recognition by winning the 2012 -13 Sydney Northern Beaches Initiative of the Year through development of a coordinated training programme for the three Narrabeen surf clubs of North Narrabeen, Narrabeen Beach and South Narrabeen.

First of all, let me start with a HUGE thanks to the Junior Board who worked extraordinarily hard to make things happen this season: Stephen Price (Vice President), Robert Cook, Matt Price, Brad Hunter, Jen Hunter, Stephen Patten, Deidre McAlinden and Priscilla Singer.

Apart from all the usual Sunday morning tasks these members participated in planning

We ran our additional Board Training sessions on Monday and Friday evenings and we hope to be able to increase participation in future seasons with the assistance of our senior members.

Rob Cook conducted some formal education sessions with some of the Junior age groups, which saw the Under 10/11/12 groups participate in basic first aid and DRABC.

The support of our top class training team at Narrabeen Beach is always a very welcome assistance for our Age Managers.
