MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies. -

Une question de point de vue ? « We are the question. » Des questions sur la société contemporaine, son passé, son présent, son avenir, son/ses identités, ses contradictions, À LA DIPLO- le collectif artistique NSK en pose par centaines, sans jamais apporter de réponses, préférant se présenter comme un catalyseur, « un miroir réfléchissant » d’une société qui — comme l’exprime parfaitement le MATIE „ philosophe Slavoj Žižek — l’appréhende, la regarde, l’écoute… Si le NSK est encore mal connu en France (et trop souvent mal compris), Devise du NSK State in Time la démarche de ses différentes entités fondatrices — Laibach, IRWIN, Noordung — est pourtant d’une pertinence et d’une lucidité féroce et indispensable dans l’Europe d’aujourd’hui. Depuis 35 ans, le Neue Slowenische Kunst, le Nouvel Art Slovène, originaire de Ljubljana, juxtapose les idées, les images, les signes et les symboles pour les détourner, les provoquer, les rassembler, les annuler avec beaucoup d’ironie et d’absurdité : la « rétro-avant-garde ». -

Laibach: The Instrumentality of the State Machine 08/24/1999 Laibach, 'The Instrumentality of the State Machine, MB7' (1983). Laibach and NSK analyze nationalism through the aesthetic dimension. By placing “national and subnational” symbols alongside each other, we demonstrate their “universality”. That is, in the very process of one nation defining its difference against the other, it frequently uses the same, or almost the same, kind of symbols and rhetoric as the other. (–Laibach, from on-line interviews) Laibach is a musical group that first began performing in the mining town of Trbovlje in central Slovenia in 1980. With Tito’s death that year, the future of Yugoslavia became uncertain, and throughout the 1980s youth subcultures engaged in agitation in the sphere of civil society producing challenges to the existing Socialist government. In using the term civil society, I refer to social interaction on all levels: institutional, private, public, etc., which involve aspects of self-involvement and social relations more regulated by laws and institutions. By subject I refer to the subject of psychoanalysis who is always split from his/her object of desire and whose actions represent this eternal longing for wholeness which can never be fulfilled. In 1984 Laibach merged with similar artistic groups working in the Slovene capital city of Ljubljana to form the art collective Neue Slowenische Kunst, NSK, (New Slovene Art). The art collective NSK comprises the groups Laibach (music and ideology), Irwin (fine arts),Noordung (theater), and New Collectivism (graphic arts). The art collective shifted its strategy in 1992 by becoming a “state”, the “virtual state” of NSK. -

Funding bodies The Equity Trust Fund. i ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY ABSTRACT FACULTY OF ARTS, LAW AND SOCIAL SCIENCES DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY LAIBACH AND THE NSK: AN EAST-WEST NEXUS IN POST- TOTALITARIAN EASTERN EUROPE SIMON PAUL BELL JANUARY 2014 This thesis is a study of the Slovenian multi-disciplinary collective the NSK (Neue Slowenische Kunst), with particular focus on the music group Laibach. This thesis interrogates how Laibach and the NSK operate as a nexus between Eastern Europe and the West through the ritualised staging of ideology as a mechanism of power. This research addresses the wider issue of Eastern European aesthetic discourse in the context of hegemonic Western aesthetic discourse. Research involved an analysis of Laibach and the NSK’s prime aesthetic strategy, Retrogardism, in the context of Western aesthetic discourse. This required an analysis of diverse fields such as the historic avant-garde, European history, critical theory, cultural activism, and Performance Art.
