BY CATHY ASPLIN

Ella Tims was thrilled to see ‘Backstage Beef Burger’ added to the menu at McDonald’s yesterday. It was a proud moment for the Te Awamutu crew member, as the burger was designed by her and will be sold nationwide. Ella says her Backstage Beef Burger was inspired by all the things she likes to eat on a burger. “So I used two juicy tender beef patties, two slices of cheese, crisp shredded lettuce, a slice of juicy tomato, tangy pickles and red onion with garlic aioli, mustard and ketchup all on a perfectly toasted bun.” Her burger was created as part of a nationwide search to find the best beef and the best chicken burgers, designed by crew members and inspired by television programme, The X Factor. Te Awamutu McDonald’s initially ran an internal competition to find the restaurant’s best burgers with all the crew submitting their favourites. Ella’s burger won the local competition and went on to win the national competition, beating out 40 other beef burger entries from around the country. Along with having her burger featured on the McDonald’s menu for a limited time, Ella’s creation won the Te Awamutu team $1000 towards a crew activity (a planned movie night) and a $30 Prezzy Card for each crew member. As a bonus, Te Awamutu franchisees Tony and Te Awamutu Community Patrol – Angela Rowland took Ella and some of her Active in your Communities Covering Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, Ohaupo, Pirongia workmates to Auckland to The X Factor meet and greet with contestants and judges on Tuesday night. The third game of the football season saw the first team trying to get their first win of the season at Matamata. Ben Petersen reports the first ten minutes was dominated with numerous chances by the away side but they were unable to capitalise on them. Near the quarter mark a through ball to Wasu Krishna was brought under control, and he took both the last defender and the goal keeper on and beat them both to then calmly slot the ball in the back of the net to give Te Awamutu the lead. Not long after the dust had settled from the first goal, Krishna was in a similar position with what seemed like time to spare, to place the ball into the open goal to double the advantage and his tally. The rest of the half continued to be a ping pong affair and at the end of the first half Te Awamutu led 2-0. Coach Dave Ireland said both at halftime, and the end of the game, 2-0 is the worse score to be going into halftime with and it was evident in the second half they were very wise words.
