Paul Mauriat, a universal music conductor During the eighties, my music band was mainly influenced by a great composer, arranger and conductor by the name of Paul Mauriat. At the time, we lived in Long Xuyen (South Vietnam.). The members of the music band were: 1/ Tran Van Manh, (yours truly), teacher in the city, and an average level classic guitar musician. 2/Mai Xuan Lai, a high level classic guitar musician. Mai Xuan Lai started playing guitar as a child. That explains his high quality as a player. He was able to perform some very intricate pieces by Andres Segovia. For example, pieces from a classical repertoire adapted for the guitar like “Gavotte », «Prelude in minor D» (J. S. Bach), «The Enchanted Flute theme and variations» (W. A. Mozart), «Moonlight Sonata» (L. V. Beethoven), and above all, he could perform extremely difficult pieces composed for the guitar by the talented Italian composer Nicolas Paganini. 3/ Canh, the eldest of the Lai brothers,he was an educator in this town and played music with me, notably “The Hungarian Danse N°5” by Johannes Brahms. 4/ Buu, also elder brother of Lai, he held a shop in the town’s market. 5/ Tham, other sibling of Lai, he too held a shop in the town’s market. 6/ Nghia, business associate with Tham. 7/ Kien, he too was a talented guitarist, he held a position with the tourist office in Long Xuyen. He often played «..La Playa..» (Jo Van Wetter) with his acoustic guitar equipped with nylon cords, which would give out a fantastic sound. 8/ Dieu, elder brother of Kien, he too was a great guitarist. Most times, we gathered the 7 or 8 of us. During the day, everyone would work his job to earn a living, but at nights, around 6 or 7 pm, we would promptly gather at the Trang cafeteria to have fun, have a cup of coffee and listen to music.. We all sat at the same table, having a coffee, wait that the coffee would drip from the filter slowly listening to music. We spent long hours at the cafeteria, we would part around 11 pm and then go home. One of us would buy a pack of cigarettes for all of us to smoke. We were all heavy smokers, we liked much the brands Capstan and PallMall, all without filters but nonetheless very fragrant. To justify our sticking around for the whole evening, we would ask for tea pots (they were free), and that would allow us to stay longer, each and everyone of us would take turns to ask for the allowed one free tea pot. Luckily, we were friends with the two daughters of the owner, and we were long time patrons of the cafeteria, so we sort of enjoyed a free use of the amenities of the place. That’s when we listened to Paul Mauriat’s music. Among his many albums, there were two pieces that we liked much and listened all the time: «Toccata» (composed by Gaston Rolland and directed by Paul Mauriat), this piece is sublime, for his sublime classical harmony, above all, it is superbly arranged by Paul Mauriat with the well assembled sounds of the violins. The other piece : «The pearl Fishers» (composed by the famous French composer Georges Bizet most known for his opera Carmen), this piece is most beautiful especially when interpreted with an acoustic guitar with nylon cords. We all admired this guitarist, especially his interpretation full of emotion and strength. At the time, we were very moved by it, as we were totally enthralled by the guitar which we practiced every day. There were other pieces by Paul Mauriat which we loved much : «The time of the flowers», a popular Russian song composed by the Russian composer Boris Fomin, which became very famous in the sixties and know in English by its title: «Those where the days».

OCTOBER '1970 EVENING WITH PAUL MAURIAT Written by Jim Howard Witt FEBRUARY '2006 FANCLUB.PAULMAURIAT.RU 2012 PAUL MAURIAT INTERVIEW JIM HOWARD WITT: And from Cincinnati you will go to? PAUL MAURIAT: Well, I go in… After Cincinnati and Chicago and after many cities in Texas, then we come back to New York, and little tour in Canada, Montreal, and some city around New York. – Will you be doing on a television while you are in the United States? – No. Some television but only talk television, because when I arrive to a city, sometimes I take the plane and the musicians are on the road and I can’t do a concert only by myself. – Mostly it will be local television (television on the local level) or it will be any network television? – Both. – I imagine, a lot of people would like to know, and I would like to know as well, how did you get your start in the music field and the show business? – I started very young. I was seventeen years old, and I decided one day to have my own orchestra. And then with this orchestra we work in all cities of the south of the France and foreign countries like Italia, Belgium and Egypt. How do you say Egypt / Agypt? – Egypt. – Egypt. And I come back in Marseille, because I was born in Marseille. Then I decided to go to Paris about twelve years before, twelve years ago. • Great Instrumental
I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). I also listened to my Dad’s 78s, and my favorite song of those was Raymond Scott’s Powerhouse from 1937 (which was often heard in Warner Bros. cartoons). and to records that my friends had, and that their parents had - artists such as: (This is not meant to be a complete or definitive list of the music of these artists, or a definitive list of instrumental artists – rather it is just a list of many of the instrumental songs I heard and loved when I was growing up - therefore this list just goes up to the early 1970s): Floyd Cramer (Last Date and On the Rebound and Let’s Go and Hot Pepper and Flip Flop & Bob and The First Hurt and Fancy Pants and Shrum and All Keyed Up and San Antonio Rose and [These Are] The Young Years and What’d I Say and Java and How High the Moon), The Ventures (Walk Don't Run and Walk Don’t Run ‘64 and Perfidia and Ram-Bunk-Shush and Diamond Head and The Cruel Sea and Hawaii Five-O and Oh Pretty Woman and Go and Pedal Pusher and Tall Cool One and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue), Booker T.
