Round 5 - 4th—5th May 2013 Round 5 - 4th—5th May 2013

This week AFL Sydney will take part in Umpiring Round to support umpires at the community level of the game.

Umpiring Round is a great initiative and we encourages everyone involved in Australian Football – coaches, players, administrators, parents and supporters – to play a role in creating a positive match day environ- ment to retain and recruit umpires. This should be something we look to do not just for one round a year but every weekend of footballs!

On the field last weekend we welcomed blue skies again which saw some high quality football once again. The evenness of the competitions in 2013 can be highlighted by looking through the division where you will find just a few undefeated sides after only 4-5 rounds.

The ANZAC day game on Thursday at Picken Oval turned out to be a one sided affair with a rejuvenated Western Suburbs very impressive against the Dockers. A large crowd turned out for a great days football involving the senior and junior clubs and credit must go to the Western Suburbs committee for their efforts on the day. Their big victory see’s them atop the Premier Division ladder.

On Saturday, 2012 Premiers UNSW/ES suffered their first loss of the season when they were beaten at home by the in form North Shore. Despite an even first three quarters the Bombers ran away in the last to remain undefeated and prove their credentials as real challengers in 2013. While last years Premier Division flag holders were beaten, last years Division One premiers, Manly, continued their giant killing run by beat- ing UTS in a tight contest to stretch their unbeaten record to an amazing 34 games across three seasons. The Wolves last 1st Grade loss came way back in July 2011! Other winners were Campbelltown who were far too strong for Sydney Hills to claim their first victory of the year, Pennant Hills and St George.

In the lower grades, UTS sit on top of Division One after a strong win over one of the flag favourites in Southern Power while the newly promoted St George also remain unbeaten. Division Two see’s Sydney University, Wests and Manly all unbeaten however the top 6 or 7 look to be very even. Wests position is great to see considering their tough few years in Division One and is one of the positives of divisionalisa- tion. Division Three has provided a few upsets with hot favourites Blacktown going down to the strong Randwick City however Sydney Uni sit on top as the only undefeated side.

The Army AFL Sydney Womens competitions have sprung an upset or two but back to back Premiers Bal- main again look the side to beat however their clash with UNSW-ES on Saturday will tell us alot. The Sting- rays as predicted look to be the big improvers this year and also remain unbeaten. The Division Two compe- tition looks a two horse race in the early stages between Macquarie University and Southern Power but its the Warriors who have proved ruthless early and are yet to concede a point in two games.

The Under 18 Division One competition looks healthy also with only two unbeaten sides in Pennant Hills and UNSW/ES. It appears the closest competition in years and picking the winner will be tough. The Under 18 Division Two flag at this early stage appears to be headed to the Northern Beaches.

This weekends ‘game-to-catch-if-you-can-only-catch-one’: Army Womens Division One—UNSW-ES v Balmain at Village Green @ 8:30am Saturday

Have a great weekend at the football (and don't forget to thank an umpire!) www.sydneyafl.com.au 36 www.sydneyafl.com.au 1 Round 5 - 4th—5th May 2013 Round 5 - 4th—5th May 2013

UMPIRING ROUND 2013 This week AFL SYDNEY will take part in Umpiring Round to support umpires at the community level of the game. North

Umpiring Round encourages everyone involved in Australian Football – coaches, players, administrators, parents and Shore supporters – to play a role in creating a positive match day environment to retain and recruit umpires.

At the community level, a welcoming environment ensures umpires feel supported to officiate to the best of their Moorebank ability. Each weekend of club football there are more than 3800 umpiring appointments required in NSW/ACT many of these are filled by club umpires, mums and dads just helping out for the day. It is critical that the AFL community works together to create a positive atmosphere for the officials of the game whether they are league appointed or club um- pires.

Often umpires are lost to the game due to the reception and abuse they receive from spectators and fans at matches.

AFL SYDNEY will participate in a number of initiatives that will help improve the overall umpiring experience:

· Prior to each match, both teams (including coaching staff) line up and shake the umpires hands, Pennant Hills · At the conclusion of the match, the coaches from both teams go onto the ground to shake the umpires hands, · During breaks the home club to offer umpires a drink and at the end of the game invite the umpires to have a drink at the after match presentation · Where clubs have a PA system, the announcer to advise of the details of Umpiring Round St George When surveyed, 68 per cent of umpires said their number one reason for umpiring was their love of the game. coach says both players and spectators may not realise that umpires are as committed and pas- sionate about the game as they are.

“As a coach, I help prepare my players to perform at the best of their ability each week,” Longmire said. “It may not be common knowledge but umpires train and prepare themselves just like the players do. It takes a tre- Sydney mendous amount of commitment and dedication to become an umpire and we respect the work they do – umpires Hills Sydney play an integral role in our great game.” University With participation rates booming across the country, the number of umpires needs to increase in order to meet the demand for the game. Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that the match day environment for umpires at community football is beginning to improve.

In 2011, the number of umpires in NSW/ACT increased by 8% to a record 1142 umpires, coaches and mentors. The aim is to reach 2000 umpires by 2016 - which means a 15% growth each season. UNSW/ES

GIANTS Senior Assistant Coach and Play AFL Ambassador Leon Cameron said that all participants should recognise the contribution of umpires. UTS Women’s “Umpires are essential to our sport, so it’s important that we get behind Umpiring Round and show our appreciation for umpires at all levels of the game,” Cameron said. Western “Decisions may not always go your way, but just remember that without the umpires we wouldn’t have a game each Suburbs week so please respect their judgement and play the game in good spirits.”

A number of umpires around the country will also be wearing green shirts throughout the year to communicate to people that they are learning the game and need to be encouraged and supported.

Everyone can play a role in creating a positive match day environment to ensure umpires, coaches, players and volun- teers perform at their peak.

In the early period of the 7 JENNA MILLER 5 STEPH COCKERILL--WRIGHT game’s development players often wore sleeveless lace-up tops which gradually disappeared be- 8 SANDRA SMYTH 6 KAMIA ZARB tween the 1960s and early 1980’s. A few players still choose to wear a long sleeved variation of the 9 KATHRYN HULL modern ‘jumper’ design. Initially, players wore full length pants, before adopting shorts very early in 7 SUSAN O’’HANION 11 MELANIE HIBBERT the 1900s. Tight fitting shorts were a notable fashion trend in the 1980’s most notably was Warwick Capper. Long socks are compulsory and boots now with moulded cleats or studs for gripping the 12 BRITTANY DAY 8 BEC APTED ground. Previously screw-ins studs or stops were used but have been banned since the 1990s. Some 13 NIKKY CANTRILL 9 CLARE WHEATLEY players prefer to wear headbands to keep the hair out of their faces while playing. Black arm bands, 15 RACHEL MOON 10 CYNTHIA ANDERSON using electrical tape, around their mid biceps and triceps, are sometimes worn in memorial of some- 16 PATRICIA TIDDSWELL one normally related to the player, or former club personality, who has recently died. 11 DEJA DYER 17 RACHEL SMITH 12 HANNAH WILSON Umpires have worn white and were sometimes referred to as ‘white maggots’ amongst supporters. 19 ALEXANDRA TEGG They now wear bright colours to avoid clashes with the players jumpers. Goal umpires also wear 20 MEL APPLEBY 13 ELSIE BANKS coloured t-shirts and caps rather than the traditional white lab coat and broad brimmed hat similar to 22 JANE FREELAND 14 ROSLYN HOLDEN that worn by cricket umpires.

23 CATHERINE BOUSFIELD 15 GABI BRYAN Supporters 24 BRONTE HOWELL 16 SUZZANAH B The devoted supporter wears the colours of their favourite team. This may include a football jumper, 27 AMY KOWSKI scarf, beanie (head covering) and coat (a duffle coat back in the 1970s and 1980s) with players 17 YEN TIEN 29 ERIKA HOSKING badges attached. Supporters ‘barrack’ or shout for their team which entails singing the club song or chants such as ‘Carn the Swans’ and call out ‘Syd-neey’ when they feel the team needs to have a bit 31 LISA ROSE 19 SHANNON FLEMING of crowd support. 32 CHARLENE WOODS 20 KAYA THOMPSON 33 BRINELY HASSON 21 JUSTINE RUSK Small meat pies and beer are popular foods to enjoy on match day. 34 KATHELEEN PARKER 22 GABBY FURY 37 LOUISE GLASGOW At the half time break it was tradition for supporters to go onto the ground and play ‘kick-to-kick.’ 23 JOAN PACULAN This was also done at the three quarter time break and some supporters would listen to what the 39 RENEE MIDIC coach had to say to his players. This is now usually only done at suburban and country 24 LOUISE BATY 57 RYLEE WOOD games. In recent years security officials have been employed to guard the safety of officials and players as they leave the ground.

Reading the Record, the match day programme and recording the goals kicked by play- ers is also done by some supporters.
