Hoffman Estates Police Department Honored for Excellence

The Hoffman Estates Police Department was honored in 2006 with several awards for excellence in traffic safety. The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) awarded the Hoffman Estates Department a First Place Award for departments with 51-100 sworn officers in the Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge. The Traffic Safety Challenge is a program that recognizes law enforcement agencies throughout the state for their efforts in addressing traffic and highway safety. The program considers officer training, policies and procedures, public information and education efforts, enforcement and effectiveness measures in determining award recipients. The Hoffman Estates Police Department also won a special award from the IACP for the best Bicycle Pedestrian Safety Program in the state, and received a Speed Monitor Trailer as a prize. The International Association of Chiefs of Police awarded the Hoffman Estates Police Department first-place honors in the 2005-2006 National Law Enforcement Challenge. The Village’s Police Department has won this award 10 times since 1993. In fact, the HEPD won this award nine consecutive times beginning in 1993, and won this year’s challenge after not applying for two previous challenges. Finally, HEPD Officers Mark Mueller and Mark Wondolkowski were individually recognized for their efforts in removing impaired drivers from our roadways. Retired Illinois State Police Colonel Dan Kent presented the awards on behalf of the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety. Since 2001, Officer Mueller has made more than 200 DUI arrests and Officer Wondolkowski has made more than 300 DUI arrests. The officers were publicly thanked by the Village Board at the November 27, 2006 Public Health and Safety Committee Meeting. The Village President, Mayor McLeod, and members of the Board of Trustees honor Representatives from the Hoffman Estates Police Department for their many awards in 2006.
