NSCL LUDI RULES

1. Playing Area 1.1. Regulation courts will be used or adapted based on availability of host university facilities. 2. Equipment 2.1. A regulation basketball and net from the host university is to be used for all matches as approved by SCL. Hoop height will be standard for high school co-ed basketball or as available by host facilities. 2.2. All discs in all matches should be similar. 3. Number of Players 3.1. 5 players from each team are allowed on the court at one time. 3.2. A team can have up to 8 players with at least 3 girls and 3 boys on every team. 3.3. Every player on the court must have possession in the half they play. 3.4. Player substitutions can be completed only: 3.4.1. at halftime. If a player has not played by halftime, then they must be substituted in at halftime. Everyone on the team deserves a chance to play. 3.4.2. to replace injured players. In this case, the opposing team may substitute a like number of, or fewer, players. 4. Starting and Restarting Play 4.1. Start of the game: 4.1.1. Representatives of the two teams fairly determine (coin toss, rock/paper/scissors, , etc.) which team chooses to 4.1.1.1.start with the ball 4.1.1.2.which side they wish to initially play. 4.1.1.3.The other team gets the remaining choice. 4.2. Halftime 4.2.1. The game should last two equal halves. This time will be determined by scheduling requirements but should remain constant throughout the day and should be clearly communicated to all participants. 4.2.2. There will be a one minute half-time allowed to the players. 4.3. Restarting play 4.3.1. To continue play after the ball is turned over with half-court rules, a member of the team gaining possession of the ball must take the ball outside of the three line to start attempting to make a basket. 4.3.1.1. If playing full court, this does not apply. 4.3.2. To continue play after the ball goes out-of-bounds, a member of the team gaining possession of the ball must carry it to, and put it into play at, the spot on the court nearest to where the ball went out-of-bounds. 4.3.3. When a team scores, the other team inbounds the ball under that basket.

4.3.3.1. If playing half-court, a team who gains possession following a score must take the ball to the top of the half court line before they may begin trying to score. 4.3.3.2. If playing full court, the team takes the ball to the other end. 4.3.3.3. A player passing the ball inbounds has five seconds to pass the ball. If he does not, then the ball is awarded to the other team. 4.4. In- and Out-of-bounds 4.4.1. The entire court is in-bounds. The perimeter lines are not part of the playing field and are out-of-bounds. 4.4.2. A player contacting the out-of-bounds area is out-of-bounds. A player who is not out-of-bounds is in-bounds. An airborne player retains in-bounds or out-of-bounds status until that player contacts the playing field or the out-of-bounds area. The following exception applies: 4.4.2.1. If momentum carries a player out-of-bounds after landing in-bounds with possession of an in-bounds ball, the player is considered out-of-bounds. 4.4.3. A ball becomes out-of-bounds when it first contacts the out-of-bounds area or an out-of-bounds player. 5. Scoring 5.1. Every shot will be 2 points. 3 pointers will not count. 5.2. At least two successful passes have to occur between gaining possession of the ball and making a basket. 5.2.1. Prior to scoring, 3 different players on the offensive team must have possession of the ball 5.2.1.1. E.g. this will occur when Player 1 passes to Player 2 who passes to Player 3 who may attempt to score. 5.2.2. Throwing the ball into play does not count as one of the passes. 5.2.3. If playing full-court and there is a fast-break, the team who intercepted the ball can score without having to pass 5.3. When playing half-court, if the offensive team rebounds a missed shot, they may immediately shoot without completing three more successful passes. 5.4. Free throws 5.4.1. A is made from the free throw line, and each free throw made is two points. 6. 6.1. Every basket turns the ball over to the other team. There are no “make-it take-it’s.” 6.2. If an in-bounds player last touches the ball and the ball goes out-of-bounds, the ball goes to the other team. 6.3. If a player is out-of-bounds and touches the ball, the other team gains possession of the ball.

6.4. Held Ball: Two or more opposing players in possession of the ball at the same ​ time is a held ball. The referee will stop the action and award the ball to one team on a rotating basis based on the initial coin toss, rock/paper/scissors, or jumpball ​ (4.1). 6.5. Travelling and double would result in turnovers. 7. Violations and Fouls 7.1. Violations 7.1.1. Travelling: If a player takes over 2.5 steps after stopping dribbling while in possession of the ball, it is considered travelling. This results in a turnover. 7.1.2. Double Dribbling: If a player stops dribbling and then dribbles again, it is a ​ . This results in a turnover. ​ 7.1.3. Further violations such as palming, goaltending, or stalling the game are at the discretion of the referee. 7.2. Fouls 7.2.1. Reckless disregard for the safety of fellow players or other dangerously aggressive behavior, will result in removal of the player from the game. This rule supersedes all other rules. 7.2.1.1.Charging: Significantly colliding into a stationary opponent is not allowed for safety reasons. 7.2.2. Hitting, pushing, slapping, or holding are considered fouls. 7.2.3. Contact: It is the responsibility of all players to avoid contact (shoving, pushing, elbow checking, etc.). Basketball is not a contact sport. If any player makes unnecessary contact, a will be called. 7.2.4. When a foul occurs, the player who was fouled gets one free throw unless that player is incapacitated by the foul. 7.2.4.1. If the foul is deemed particularly reckless by the referee, the player may have two free throws. 7.2.5. At the discretion of the NSCL Advisor, students may be suspended for unsportsmanlike conduct (too many fouls). 8. Winning the Game 8.1. The team with the most points at the end of the second half will be declared the winning team. 8.2. If play ends in a tie, there will be free throws. Alternating between teams, each team chooses four players to shoot a free throw each. Each player has 10 seconds each to shoot their free throw. 8.2.1. Free throws: 8.2.1.1. There will be a decision by the head judge on who will shoot first (cf. 4.1.1). 8.2.1.2. Whichever team makes more free throws will be declared the winning team.

8.2.1.3. If there is still a tie, there will be sudden death free throws with the remaining players.The first team to not make a free throw that the other team makes loses.
