In 2016, Jones led Jesuit to a 36-8-2 record and its first University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Champion- ship. Under the leadership of Jones, the Rangers have won seven consecutive UIL District Championships, qualifying for the UIL State Tournament each season. In addition, Jones and his coaching staff have earned UIL District Coaching Staff of the Year honors on seven occasions (1998, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016). During the Rangers’ 2016 title season, Jones earned Texas Coach of the Year honors from USA Today/Family Insurance, while members of the Blue and Gold earned a slew of personal accolades. Kyle Muller ’16 became the first athlete in program history to earn Gatorade National Player of the Year honors, one of four Player of the Year accolades bestowed upon the lefty, who was drafted with the No. 44 pick of the (MLB) Amateur Draft by the Atlanta Braves. In total, the 2016 Rangers featured three Dallas Morning News All-Area selections, 11 members of the UIL All-District team, the UIL Offensive (Matt Horvath) and Defensive (Bryce Bonner) Players of the Year, District Most Valuable Player (Muller) and the UIL 6A State Tournament Most Valuable Player (Jacob Palisch). Jesuit ended the season ranked 10th in the nation, according to MaxPreps, the top-ranked team in Texas, defeating North Mesquite (Bi-District), Belton (Area), Highland Park (Regional Quarterfinal), Oak Ridge (Regional Semifinal), and Atascocita The Rangers defeated Langham Creek, 3-0, for their first UIL 6A State Championship berth, winning the title with a 6-2 victory over Lady Bird Johnson of San Antonio on June 11. Jones led the Rangers to the first UIL 6A Baseball State Championship Tournament berth in program history in 2015, marshaling the Blue and Gold to a 35-4-2 record, including an unblemished, 14-0-0 mark in UIL District 9-6A competition. The Rangers were ranked nationally, earning a spot inside the top five in the state of Texas. On Apr. 26, 2015, Coach Jones earned his 300th career victory, a 13-1 victory over MacArthur that also awarded Jesuit Dallas its sixth straight district crown. The Rangers were ranked No. 3 in the nation during their run to the UIL 6A State Tournament. In 2010, Jones led Jesuit to its first UIL Area Championship in baseball while the Rangers were regional quarterfinal champions in 2011. His overall record as Jesuit’s head coach entering the 2017 postseason is 231-81-7 (.742) overall, and 90-12-0 (.898) against district competition, while his overall coaching record as of May 6 stands at 347-148-7 (.698). Attending W.T. White for high school, Jones was a four-time First Team All-District selection, received Dallas Morning News Sophomore of the Year honors, and was the area’s leading hitter as a junior. He attended Northwood University, where he was picked to play in the 1989 Junior College All-Star game. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, Texas High School Coaches Association, and the Dallas Baseball Academy of Texas (D-BAT), Jones is also a former president of the North Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. He and his wife, Christi, have three boys: Tyler, Justin and Tanner.
