COOL EARTH IS THE NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION THAT WORKS ALONGSIDE COMMUNITIES TO HALT AND .

2 Cool Earth 3 BROTHER & With Brother at its side, Cool Earth is working towards a world where COOL EARTH tropical deforestation and degradation has no role in climate change.

Every fifth breath we take and every fourth drop of rain comes from rainforest that covers less than three percent of the Earth’s surface.

Protecting this vital resource has been a priority of the environmental movement for 50 years. But by 2007 almost half of all tropical forests had been felled. In that year, Cool Earth was established to try a new approach.

Rather than fencing off huge reserves, Cool Earth empowers the local people who have been forest custodians for generations. Funds are invested by the community in building livelihoods, creating strong, self-determining communities – not dependency.

Ten years on, and thanks to continued support from Brother, Cool Earth’s partnerships have more rainforest under 24/7 community protection than any government or non-profit organisation. It is judged to be the most cost effective NGO at mitigating climate change through direct action.

4 Cool Earth WHY RAINFOREST?

The changing climate is the most pressing challenge facing our species.

Rainforest plays a major part in climate change. Its loss contributes to more than 12% of all CO2 emissions. But forest is also part of the solution. Keeping it standing is the simplest and cheapest way to mitigate climate change.

It’s not just climate. The world’s are the most biodiverse places on earth, sheltering millions of species. Every fifth breath we take comes from oxygen made in rainforests. 350 million people live in rainforests and a further 1.6 billion depend on the rainforests for their livelihoods. This means one in ten people in the world rely upon the rainforest.

“Cool Earth’s support means we can maintain our forest. We get our animals, natural medicines, natural hardware, everything there is. That’s why we don’t sell our wood.”

Brother believed in Cool Earth from day one. Ten years ago they backed the Asháninka partnership when it was in its infancy.

Seven years later, they became the key backer of Cool Earth’s new partnership in . Without Brother’s unwavering support, Cool Earth’s award winning model would never have got off the ground.

Brother has led the field in finding innovative ways to integrate the partnership into every aspect of their business. Click for the Earth harnesses the power of consumers to make a difference, and has so far saved 1,913,043 trees. The eco rewards initiative engages staff with Brother’s environmental values. And Brother’s remanufacturing programme continues to lead the industry and inspire its customers.

In the decade of working alongside Cool Earth, Brother has protected 10,000 acres of at-risk rainforest. But it’s done more than that. It’s been a critical friend to Cool Earth and has helped to shape the best chance we have to save the world’s remaining rainforest. We have a huge amount to thank them for.

Keeping forest standing is the most cost effective way to mitigate climate change. The trees protected by Cool Earth are keeping 250 million tonnes of carbon out of the atmosphere.

By protecting at-risk rainforest Cool Earth is contributing to the survival of unique and 106 species on the IUCN red list.

Working in partnership with smart organisations like Brother Cool Earth has leveraged millions of pounds to support rainforest communities. And it’s just the beginning.

The Amazon basin is home to one in every ten of the world’s species and a fifth of the world’s freshwater.

More than 20 percent of the world’s oxygen is produced in the Amazon rainforest and it plays a vital role in regulating the world’s climate, holding over 100 billion tonnes of carbon. It’s also where Brother’s partnership with Cool Earth began, supporting the village of Cutivireni in the Ene Valley. Word has spread and there are now 29 villages AWAJÚN in Peru who have turned away the loggers to partner with Cool Earth.

Papua New Guinea is a country of incredible diversity.

Nearly a thousand languages are spoken. Over three quarters of the country is covered in the world’s third-largest rainforest, sheltering more undiscovered species than anywhere on earth. It is also poised on the brink of disaster.

Once replaced with a palm plantation, there is no chance for the forest. Cool Earth is working alongside villages on the west of the advancing palm frontier and are strategically placed to shield the pristine rainforest behind.

We wanted a way for our supporters to engage their friends and family in what Cool Earth was doing, and raise cash to save more rainforest at the same time. In summer 2018, Pollada was launched and Cool Earth’s business partners and individual supporters have been hosting parties that save rainforest. A Pollada can take place at the office, canteen or nearest outside space. It’s a party for anywhere and anytime.
