UPDATES ON THE CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) SITUATION IN MALAYSIA 19 October 2020

Current Status of Confirmed COVID-19 Cases Who Have Recovered

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is pleased to inform that today Malaysia reported 455 COVID-19 recovery cases. Therefore, cumulatively, 13,717 confirmed COVID-19 cases have been discharged (64.2% of total cumulative cases). The breakdown of cases that have recovered by state is as follows:  Sabah (226 cases)  (107 cases)  Kedah (97 cases)  Johor (13 cases)  Terengganu (5 cases)  Negeri Sembilan (3 cases)  Sarawak (2 cases)  Pahang (1 case)  WP Labuan (1 case)

Current Situation of COVID-19 in Malaysia

19 October 2020, 12 pm, a total of 865 additional confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported to the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) MOH today. Cumulatively there are 21,363 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Malaysia. Therefore, there are currently 7,456 active and infective COVID-19 cases. They have all been isolated and given treatment.

Overall, 154 cases (17.8%) reported today are from the Penjara Kepayan Cluster, Penjara Seberang Perai Cluster, Tembok Cluster and includes four (4) cases detected through screening in Tapah Prison. These cases are isolated in prisons and are not infective to the local communities. The Senior Minister of Defence, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakub, has announced implementation of the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) at Kepayan Prison and Staff Quarters in Kampung Matambai from 20 October 2020 until 2 November 2020.

Examining the breakdown of the number of cases today, Sabah continues to report the highest number of cases at 643 cases (74.3%). More laboratory tests have been conducted in Sabah and samples sent to Peninsular Malaysia. Meanwhile, the states in the Valley account for 13.5% of the total number of cases.

Of the 865 additional cases reported today, seven (7) are imported cases who were infected overseas, involving three (3) Malaysians and four (4) non-Malaysians who were travellers from:  China – 4 cases in Selangor  Australia – 1 case in Kuala Lumpur  USA – 1 case in Selangor  Qatar – 1 case in Selangor

Of the 858 local transmission cases, 767 cases are Malaysians while 91 cases are non-Malaysians.

Of the 858 local transmission cases, five (5) cases are returnees from Sabah, making the total number of cases with a history of travel to Sabah since 20 September 2020 is 448 cases

The details of the local transmission COVID-19 cases are as follows:

 Sabah: 643 cases o 183 cases from existing active clusters. o 343 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases. o 117 cases from other COVID-19 screenings.

 Selangor: 101 cases o 71 cases from existing active clusters. o 19 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases. o 2 cases from screening of returnees from high-risk areas (Sabah). o 1 case from the Hentian Cluster, a new cluster. o 8 cases from other COVID-19 screenings.

 WP Labuan: 34 cases o 33 cases from existing active clusters. o 1 case from screening of returnees from high-risk areas (Sabah).

 Pulau Pinang: 26 cases o 24 cases from existing active clusters. o 2 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases.

 Perak: 18 cases o 9 cases from existing active clusters. o 2 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases. o 7 cases from other COVID-19 screenings.

 Melaka: 16 cases o 11 cases from the Bukit Cluster, a new cluster. o 3 cases from screening at an Immigration Detention Centre. o 1 case from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases. o 1 case from symptomatic screening.

 Kuala Lumpur: 6 cases o 4 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases. o 1 case from an existing active cluster.

o 1 case from screening of returnees from high-risk areas (Sabah).

 Negeri Sembilan: 4 cases o 2 cases from existing active clusters. o 2 cases from screening of close contacts of confirmed COVID- 19 cases.

 Kedah: 3 cases from existing active clusters.

 WP Putrajaya: 3 cases from existing active clusters.

 Johor: 2 cases o 1 case from an existing active cluster. o 1 case from screening of returnees from high-risk areas (Sabah).

 Pahang: 1 case from symptomatic screening.

 Terengganu: 1 case from an existing active cluster.

Currently, 99 confirmed COVID-19 cases are receiving treatment in the intensive care units (ICUs), with 32 patients on ventilation support.

Regretfully, three (3) additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to the National CPRC MOH today. Cumulatively, there are now 190 COVID-19 deaths in Malaysia (0.9% of total cumulative cases).

Two New Clusters Reported Today

MOH would like to inform that two (2) new clusters have been identified today.

1. The Hentian Cluster

This new cluster involves the , Selangor. The index case for this cluster (Case 18,664) was detected positive for COVID-19 through symptomatic screening on 15 October 2020 and was admitted into Hospital. Screening of close contacts has identified six (6) additional confirmed COVID-19 cases.

As of 19 October 2020, 12 pm, a total of 127 individuals have been screened, of which:  Seven (7) confirmed COVID-19 cases  120 individuals awaiting results

2. The Bukit Cluster

This new cluster involves the Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin districts in Melaka. The index case for this cluster (Case 17,531) was detected positive for COVID-19 through symptomatic screening on 13 October 2020 and was admitted into Melaka Hospital. Screening of close contacts has identified 14 additional confirmed COVID-19 cases.

As of 19 October 2020, 12 pm, a total of 89 individuals have been screened, of which:  15 confirmed COVID-19 cases

 73 individuals tested negative  1 individual awaiting result

Validity of COVID-19 Information

The government is doing its best to keep the public informed of the latest COVID-19 situation by channeling verified, accurate and timely information. While the Government deals with the spread of COVID-19, the Government also needs to address the issue of viralled messages i.e. the spread of fake news and unverified information that are deliberately created by parties with vested interests. This action is absolutely irresponsible because it causes public anxiety and worry.

The public is advised not to spread any fake news or unverified information. MOH would like to thank the community for assisting the Government in disseminating verified information.

Health Advisory on COVID-19

MOH advices the public to continue to comply to the recommendations and health advisories that are often emphasised. These advisories must be incorporated as the new normal in our daily life, including:

 Avoid the 3Cs: Avoid Crowded places; Confined spaces; and Close conversations.  Practice the 3Ws: Wash hands frequently with water and soap; Wearing facemasks is now mandatory in public areas (starting from 1 August 2020 as directed by the National Security Council) or highly recommended if symptomatic; Warn self and others for the following, in line with MOH’s advisories:

o Avoid shaking hands or touching others, including bumping parts of the body in lieu of shaking hands o Practice good coughing and sneezing etiquette o Seek early treatment if symptomatic o Stay at home and avoid from visiting others o Regularly clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces in common areas

In addition to the SOPs, continue to adhere to THiS as the new normal:  T: Terms set under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO)  Hi: High-risk groups such as children, infants, older adults and the disabled must be protected, and if unwell with symptoms, to seek early treatment  S: Safe physical distancing is practiced at all times, of at least 1 metre away from others

MOH will continue to monitor the development of the COVID-19 situation, both in the country as well as internationally, based on available information from the World Health Organization (WHO). The public will be continuously updated on the latest information. In addition, MOH will ensure that appropriate preventive and control measures are continuously implemented.
