CREDIT LINE: Kay Baden Collection, PP-MS 252, Arizona Historical Society-Papago Park PROCESSED BY: Ashley Hinshaw, 2016 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Kay Baden (originally Kathryn Badeen) was born on January 27, 1916 of Syrian immigrants Charlie and Sadie Badeen. She was one of ten children who grew up in McAlester, Oklahoma. Baden studied interior decorating at University of California, Los Angeles and made her way to Arizona as a salesperson and decorator for Montgomery Ward. In 1949, she opened her first studio, Kay Baden Interiors with partner Nancy Stillman. This launched her 50-year career as a prominent interior designer. In 1963 she opened a new studio, Kay Baden Decorators - one of the first occupants of Biltmore Fashion Park. As an active and passionate representative of her field, Baden was an influential member and former president of the prestigious American Society of Interior Designers. In 1959 Baden married Paul Sexson who served as secretary and aid to Governor Howard Pyle, President Herbert Hoover, and former brother-in-law of Senator Barry Goldwater. Throughout her career Kay Baden and her company provided interior design services for many high profile clients including Philip and Helen Wrigley, Kemper and Ethel Marley, and Loretta Young. Her commercial clients included The Biltmore Hotel, Valley National Bank, Westward Ho, and Gardiner Tennis Ranch. She died July 2, 2015 in Prescott, Arizona at age 99. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: Consists of business and client files, photographs, correspondence, professional publications, promotional materials, news clippings, and samples. As a successful business owner, Baden decorated the residences for many wealthy and notable clients. The news clippings, magazine articles, vendors, and photographs document key mid-century design trends. The breadth of the collection demonstrates Baden’s relationship with clients and provides insight into post WWII Phoenix business practices and networks; economic and urban growth; and the tastes of Kay Baden Collection– 1 of 22 Arizona Historical Society at Papago Park, 1300 N. A combination of professional and personal material, this collection has been arranged into eight series. Series I: Client Files - Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within. Contains Baden’s records of the scope of work provided including vendor forms, estimates, correspondence, photos, material samples, catalogue images, publicity, drawings and blue prints. Philip K. and Helen Wrigley’s files are subdivided by property. Series II: Personal - Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within. Includes clippings Baden kept of her family and friends’ social lives, personal accomplishments and announcements. There are educational elements including French language notes and notes on furniture. Also included here are Baden’s notes on friends and family including birthdays, legal papers, membership books, personal inventory lists, appraisals and travel documents. See also Publications -Publicity. Series III: Correspondence - Primarily personal correspondence with Paul Sexson, family, friends, clients, and notable Arizona and national figures. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within. Some letters include clippings and photos. The final folder consists of loose clippings and photos found among but not attached to specific correspondence. Series IV: Business – Arranged alphabetically and chronologically within. Includes inventories, invoices, legal documents, office procedures, sketches and floor plans, vendors and pricing information. Series V. Financial- Ledgers contain accounts receivable, special orders and purchase orders. These ledgers contain additional clients not represented in Client Files series. Series VI: Photographs – Personal photographs arranged chronologically which include photos of friends and family. Of particular interest are images of Kay Baden at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, 1940s; the grand opening of her first studio in 1949; and interiors of her apartment in the Phoenix Towers 1970s-2000s. Vendor photographs are arranged by subject, most are not dated. These include artwork, furniture, and various décor – some items as part of the studio inventory and others as potential purchases for clients. Series VII: Publications and Publicity - arranged alphabetically and chronologically within. Publications contain magazines, newsletters, and books. While some are of a personal nature, the bulk are professional publications reflecting Baden’s lifetime interest in the interior design field. Publicity includes a wide range of vendor promotional materials and news clippings related to luxury homes in Phoenix and Baden-designed interiors. Series VIII: Oversize - Includes various blue prints, photographs, drawings, textile samples as well as design board presentations for the Arizona Biltmore Hotel and Wrigley residences.
