Cirque Du Soleil Michael Jackson ONE
Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson ONE Case Study Lightware Visual Engineering 1 Peterdy 15, Budapest H-1071, Hungary +36 1 255 3800 [email protected] www.lightware.com Cirque du Soleil – Michael Jackson ONE Market Country Rental & Staging USA Lightware Equipment Used in Project 1 - Lightware MX-FR65R frame 41 - Lightware fiber receivers 3 - Lightware fiber transmitters “I’m a perfectionist; it’s part of who I am,” Michael Jackson is purported to have said. Given the quality of his work and his reputation for high standards, the expectations for a show revolving around Michael Jackson will always be exceedingly high. Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE, produced in conjunction with Jackson’s estate, aspires to meet the level of perfection the star would demand. The show, which combines Jackson’s music with Cirque’s distinctive acrobatic feats, is at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas in a space that was formerly occupied by a production of The Lion King; it was completely renovated specifically for MJ ONE. CDS anchored a team that included Auerbach Pollock Friedlander, Moser Architecture Studio, and Jaffe Holden Acoustics for the design and specification of the rigging and automation, lighting control, and audio-video systems. The show’s story line was written by choreographer Jamie King, who danced in Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour. The musical director, Kevin Antunes (New Kids on the Block, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Britney Spears, ‘N Sync, Justin Timberlake), made his selections from “Michael’s entire treasure vault” and remixed it specifically for the show. -

It's a Bug's Life — and a Fun One at That
It’s a bug’s life — and a fun one at that Cirque du Soleil’s new show “OVO’’ at the Fan Pier features acrobatic spiders, ants, crickets, and more. (Benoit Fontaine) By Don Aucoin Globe Staff / July 24, 2010 OVO Written, choreographed, and directed by Deborah Colker Sets, Gringo Cardia. Costumes, Liz Vandal. Lights, Eric Champoux. Presented by Cirque du Soleil. At: Grand Chapiteau on Fan Pier, near Pier Four, through Aug. 29. Tickets: $35-$161 for kids, $45-$230 for adults. 800-450-1480, www.cirquedusoleil.com/ovo Actually, make that crawling, running, gyrating, whirling, hurtling, cycling, and flying. Cirque du Soleil is in town with a new show, “OVO,’’ that is set in the insect world. It’s a charmer and often a dazzler, marred only by a grating audience-interaction segment in the second act that stalls the show’s momentum and made me wish someone would send out the clowns. As with earlier Cirque du Soleil productions, there are times in “OVO’’ when the performers achieve a level of artistry that almost defies comprehension. It is like watching Fred Astaire dance or Mariano Rivera pitch. At this particular moment, Cirque du Soleil may feel it has something to prove. Since it was founded in 1984, the Montreal-based organization had succeeded in casting a spell over audiences with one spectacle-laden show after another. All told, its productions have been seen by nearly 100 million spectators. But Cirque experienced an embarrassing hiccup last month when “Banana Shpeel,’’ a $20 million foray onto Broadway, closed after only six weeks. -

Cirque Dreams: Illumination by Neil Goldberg, Jill Winters & David Scott
Young Critics Reviews Fall 2010-2011 Cirque Dreams: Illumination By Neil Goldberg, Jill Winters & David Scott At the Hippodrome Theatre through October 17 By Aaron Bell ILLUMINATION SHOWS ITS BRILLIANCE The house lights go down in the historic Hippodrome Theatre. We’re brought into a fast-paced newscast program when we hear the superbly resonant voice of Onyie Nwachukwu, who plays the Reporter. She tells us that another regular day has just begun, and that the daily occurrences in the “Cirque Dreams: Illumination” world will soon be lighting up the stage. Although a tad disturbed by her slightly nasal, high-belting, soulful vocals, one comes to appreciate Nwachukwu’s stylized singing; it completely fits her fun-loving, scoop-seeking reporter essence. One can’t help but appreciate her wonderful articulation and vocal clarity when she serenades us with a fabulously written opening number. This song, “Change,” gives us the main idea of the entire show, “If you don’t like it, change your mind. ” One’s mind is indeed changed by this sparkly production. The many feats of physical excellence and theatrical genius suggest how everyday life would look with an incredibly heightened sense of imagination. Santiago Rojo’s costume design and Betsy Herst’s production design bring that concept to life with their explosively colorful and symbolic wardrobes and sets. One sees cast members dressed as animated street cones, traffic lights and construction items. The set uses neon effects to brighten up the town atmosphere. The characters’ relationships with each other and their environment are interesting elements as well. -
